>When

Likely with new engine formula there might be new teams and manufacters interested, like VW and mabe, Toyota
>>
>>75934047
I hugely doubt it will happen any time soon

2020 might offer an opportunity, because that's when the engine regulations change. If FOM come up with an engine formula that is cheaper and a bit simpler, then it might attract more manufacturers.

But yeah Toyota are almost certainly not going to join before 2020, because they would have to develop a hybrid V6 turbo from scratch, and it would only last a year or two, so I think hell will freeze over before that happens.

It's worth noting that Helio Castroneves was leading the race and all of a sudden he was called in for fuel. A very confused Castroneves argued a bit with his strategist(Roger at the time I think) after having been told previously and repeatedly that he was hitting the fuel mileage he needed.

Danica was gifted that win.

Yeah, Gazoo is the Toyota WEC team. They've put together some pretty good cars in the top division, the Le Mans Prototype one, which is why I was wondering if they would do an F1 comeback soon. Engine development isn't really the problem for Toyota IMO, they're already at the top of that in endurance racing.

If you're implying that this means they would be able to knock together an F1 engine for the current formula without breaking a sweat, you're wrong

2020 is the absolute earliest that they might consider joining F1, when the formula is renewed.

No new manufacturers will enter F1 for a while, certainly not during the current regulations. Simply not worth it and Honda killed off any potential interest anyway. If the new engine regulations are something a bit less autismal, I could see manufacturers like Chevrolet and another Japanese one (likely Toyota). Don't underestimate the power of Japanese power-struggles in motorsports, see what happened in WRC in the 90's.

Maybe even something branded from the VW group if they don't get kill by diesel for good and realize Formula E is still shit that no one actually watches

Chevy is already in Indycar, and their market is not only the US. They have put quite a bit of effort into the European markets at least, and produce a fuckton of very bland "generic European" looking cars that just happen to be Chevrolets. I don't think it would be too much of a leap for them and the obvious Haas linkup would be great PR if they don't choke.

What does everyone else think? Haas has made it clear that they don't wish to be a Ferrari Junior team for forever. Red Bull are with Renault only out of necessity. They already had something of an agreement with Audi before the dieselgate thing happened. McLaren might actually lose patience with Honda eventually, Mercedes might just declare themselves eternal dominators of F1 and fuck off after the current regs because they have "nothing more to prove" (and because the new regulations aren't 100% made for them). North America is the biggest growing market for F1, which is why it might begin to be appealing to a US-manufacturer as well. Even the likes of Ford is toying around with Euro-based racing stuff now.

Maybe we could even get a cheeky BMW return, plenty of options for them, Williams, Sauber, why not whatever Force India becomes once Vijay is found dead in an Indian prison? But fuck BMW and the people who drive them tbqh lads

I honestly am not convinced Formula E will become the spectacle that manufacturers seem to think it will

I reckon Ford will come back, as Ford this time.

What would GM do if they enter? Brand their cars as chevy? rotate it based on where they're racing (Holden in aus, Buick in China, Chev in europe etc.)
>>
>>75934272
Formula E will become big when it gets more big manufacturers like Mercedes and if they continue their current advertising strategy. Right now it's a very easy league for new racing fans or fans looking to branch out to watch because all of the races are free and they have a lot of quality content for free outside of the races, too. They just need big names and that's coming with Mercedes.

I do want to see Chevy in F1 but to be honest I think I would rather have BMW or Alfa Romeo come back than see Chevy enter for a bit and then become mediocre and leave. McLaren will end up with Mercedes, also, by my predictions.

Really I just either want Toyota or an American team that doesn't have ties to a team like Haas, since I'm a Penske fan.
>>
>>75934234
She won 1 (one) Indycar race. It was the first series after the merger & they couldn't redo contracts with promotors, so half the teams & drivers were in Long Beach, while the other half was in Japan, where she won.

Formula E has a devoted following among cucked tech nerds. I'm not joking.

Are you familiar with The Verge (tech website)? I used to love them, but in recent years they have become a leftist hellhole of degeneracy. Funnily enough, this coincided with a large increase in the number of female writers on their staff. What a coincidence.

Anyway, they seem to be obsessed with Formula E and they write about it all the time. Very little mention of F1 though. Formula E is seen as "super progressive green futurist happy smiley future gay space communist", I guess.

Ford has more than often changed their strategy on a dime. I think, it will depend on regulations and how they evolve. If there will be a push to make Formula 1 more car manufacturer friendly, Ford might reconsider, although I agree, that the company would probably need a new sporty marque... or they buy one. VW is probably the most likely candidate to send something forward, be it in the form of Lamborghini or Audi or Skoda or Seat or Bugatti.
The madmen will probably go with a Lamborghini team and Audi engines.

It's gonna be interesting.
These top drivers you're writing about all came into racing during the time of Senna and Prost - at the time when Motorsport was the most popular and it was already prohibitively expensive - that only has gotten worse, and Motorsport just isn't as popular because of the decline of many series, safety (consider all of these kids having parents) and stuff like that. We will see more autistic racing children with rich ex-driver dads though, like Verstappen. Families still invested in Motorsport with the capabilities to let them train enough to be decent.

Why are Indy drivers was much worse than F1 hand me downs?
>>
>>75934527

It's honestly one big "into the fences" style crash at an oval away from being banned for good.

The drivers drive respectfully but accidents can happen. In F1, accidents usually have no consequences because the barriers are so far away and there's always ample room to slow down momentum. Indy is like having a barrier right at the edge of 130R or Copse, except they take those corners like 50-60 km/h faster than F1.

It's particularly intense at Indy where you get all these random 1-off drivers participating in this race, who sometimes don't do any sort of other racing in the meantime.

Truly awesome but really fucking crazy

I also don't exactly understand what there is to gain for CNN to sponsor a team like Caterham. I'm sure they didn't have to pay a lot for that deal, but still, its not like CNN isn't a globally recognized brand

https://realsport101.com/news/sports/racing/f1/renault-need-to-move-on-from-jolyon-palmer

>New driver Nico Hulkenberg, who came over from Force India in the winter, has scored 14 points, has qualified in the top 10 three times and brought the best out of the car every weekend. On the other side though, is Jolyon Palmer, who has had more trips into the wall than he has race finishes. Palmer is without a point this season, has retired twice, and been an expert at having accidents by himself.

>So far this season Palmer has been an average of 1.655 seconds off the pace of Hulkenberg in qualifying. While a big chunk of that comes from a disastrous Australian qualifying, he is still yet to be within a second of Hulkenberg on a Saturday. That margin is extremely worrying, and is far and away the biggest between teammates this season.

>Williams’ rookie Lance Stroll is around four-to-six tenths off the pace of his vastly more experienced teammate Felipe Massa, but he is continually optimistic and positive about his development. He is also only 18, Palmer is 26. If he doesn’t have the pace now there is almost no chance that he will ever have it.

It is great to see that the F1 journalists are finally coming to terms with this. At least beginning to. It's actually astounding how much bias there is towards British drivers. Everyone was annihilating Kvyat last year when he had a bad season for example. Sky continues to be neutral in their commentary on Palmer whilst are ready to relegate Bottas into permanent no. 2 status after 5 races, of which he won 1 and got a pole in 1.

If Palmer continues to perform like this, it will continue to undermine Renault's aspirations as a serious contender for the future. I get that they had Palmer on in 2016 because it was a total write-off year, but this is now the first real Renault effort of a year and they're still keeping him? He has absolutely no redeeming qualities and will simply not get better. He is already 26, he took 5 years to win GP2 which is his only real "achievement" and he probably would have lost that to rookie Vandoorne anyway if Vandoorne didn't have his early season chokefest.

The difference with e.g. Stroll and Palmer is that Stroll is simply inexperienced, and might eventually unlock some potential. His development would have been much more gradual had he gone through the typical feeder ladder. Even Ocon did GP3 AFTER winning F3 in his first year, and then went on to do DTM and, FP1s and effectively half of a practice season with Manor before really getting into F1. Stroll skipped so much and if he had showed up in F1 at age 22 as GP2 champion, he would probably do a lot better. Palmer on the other hand has simply peaked, he is simply not a great or even good driver and will never be. Stroll might eventually "earn" his place in F1 (remember how ragged Perez was when he first started?), Palmer will never do anything remarkable, which is why he just needs to FUCK OFF
>>

>"During an attempt to qualify for the Indy 500, Gordon Smiley, a cocky young driver from Texas, was determined to break 200mph or die trying. Several veteran drivers...had warned him that he was in way over his head, driving all wrong for the Speedway. Smiley was a road racer and was used to counter-steering his car to avoid a crash if the rear wheels broke traction. While rushing to the car, I noticed small splotches of a peculiar gray substance marking a trail on the asphalt leading up to the driver. When I reached the car, I was shocked to see that Smiley's helmet was gone, along with the top of his skull. He had essentially been scalped by the debris fence. The material on the race track was most of his brain. His helmet, due to massive centrifugal force, was literally pulled from his head on impact...I rode to the care center with the body. On the way in I performed a cursory examination and realized that nearly every bone in his body was shattered. He had a gaping wound in his side that looked as if he had been attacked by a large shark. I had never seen such trauma."

I don't think Stroll will be any good but I agree with you about being to early to actually say he is a complete shit, difference with Massa is ridiculous and that doesn't help.
I'm pretty sure that Renault wanted to have Sainz-Hulkenberg/Sainz-Magnussen line up for 2017 but since RB told them to fuck off they got Hulkenberg and KMag, that would have been Renault's choice if he didn't went to Haas so they had to decide if keep Palmer or push Sirotkin, they decided to keep Palmer hoping to avoid disaster with in mind sacking him next season for someone else, Alonso maybe, or Torpedo.

>Purchase of vehicles run on fossil fuel will stop completely by 2030, according to a study by Tony Seba, an economist with Stanford University.

>Reason: Seba believes that electrification and transport as a service (TaaS) will sweep across transportation industry. In his report, Rethinking Transportation 2020-2030, which is the talk of board room meetings in the auto industry and green energy enthusiasts, released on Monday, Seba said that some of the key stakeholders will face sudden demise.

I understand if the world goes full electric for normal cars, but what's the point of sportscars if they all sound and feel like electric toothbrushers? I mean, Teslas are cool and all that shit, but I'd prefer literally any fuel sports car before a Tesla (if I had the money)

I noticed that after I posted :^)

Then debated if he was an "F1 reject" or not.
He lasted 6 full seasons, and got a podium, which is a hell of a lot more than Chilton and Rossi.

Intended to mention that in my post too, but forgot.
Always had a Honda engine in every F1 team he was in.

Inline engine, not a V
>>
>>75939280
because of the way the engine is made, and the extreme restrictions on intake in the series, it is most efficient to simply have the intake like that, straight into the valves

where did everything go wrong?
>>
>>75939191
Why do you all expect Alonso to drift towards the win in Indy in his first try? Fittipaldi needed 6 tries to finally win it and Mansell never did. I don't expect him to suddenly win ths year 2bh
>>
>>75939317
His team mates are near the top of the sheet, he does have the car to win if he can figure out how to drive it
>>
>>75939317
because rookies have won it pretty often recently, it is easier to adapt to these cars and win Indy now than ever with the low HP and high downforce

>Why do you all expect Alonso to drift towards the win in Indy in his first try?

I think most of us expect him to end up in the wall :^)

But he's publicly said he wants to win the triple crown, so his goal is to win.
Which he has no hope in hell of doing, so we mock him.
