Haven't gotten a chance to watch it again but I think Masvidal should have probably won the fight with the new rules.
Controlling your opponent doesn't cut it anymore, unless nothing else happens throughout the rest of the fight.
Control is impressive, but if you had to pick between being controlled for 3 minutes and getting the shit beaten out of you for 30 seconds you'd pick getting controlled, and for good reason.

Maia completes a takedown around the 2:30 mark (where ironically DC and Rogan quip about the fightmetric of Maia being 0 in 5 for takedowns when Maia was obviously was on top) In regards to his offensive output, Maia scores mainly with ground and pound from 2 min mark onwards, From the 58 sec mark he goes into an offensive submission set, attempting the RNC once, he stalls out, goes into GnP and then attempts and RNC a second time, is stalled out, re grips and ground and pounds


Masvidal's defensive gripping and grip fighting weren't momentum changers to get him in a more dominate position or situation

MMA's ruleset are based on basic ruleset or wrestling and BJJ's and even on the defensive end like scoring a sweep (BJJ), tactical stand up (wrestling)


The grip fight Masvida did scores no major defensive win in terms of scoring. Now if Masdiva gripped fight and then shucked Maia down off his back or scramble that would have been a defensive play that would been awarded points.


Here's the gray area in judging that round 2, the offensive set of Masdiva during the 4:30 mark to 3 min mark trumping Maia's offensive set after the 3 min mark to the end of the round.

Honestly the best guard for MMA is probably half, and it isnt just because its Maia and hes popular, its very high percent to scramble and score with and safe.

With the amount of time wrestlers take sitting in half to launch ground and pound that gives the bottom man plenty of time to set up their offensive or defensive set.

Lucas Leites is a person you should probably study, he is the definition of good half guard and Maia has a great Leites style half. Other good half guard guys? Watch Chael Sonnen. Half guard is one of the few guards that wrestlers get good at fast because its found in wrestling so often.
