If you want a real chance at an 8 team playoff:
Four 16 team conferences
Conference champ game between top two teams in each conference.
Winner goes to CFP, loser goes to NY6.

The Semifinals and Championship game are all sellouts. Why would adding 1 extra game (at the home of one of the teams, no less) be so much worse?

A couple reasons
1. 16 games in 19-20 weeks- especially with all the CTE shit transpiring. It took what, 30 years to even have a conversation about a playoff.

2. Going from conference championship at a neutral site like Levi or Mercedes to a home game at Stanford sounds ridiculous. A lot less on the line. Especially when most all of the games will be a top 4 team vs a runner up or second runner up to the conference champ

3. Campus will be shut down shortly after the conference champ games. So you lose the student atmosphere, and you're telling people to get in their cars to drive to a college town in possibly freezing weather and sit outside for a cold game.

It would only benefit a few when instead you could make the conference champ game bigger and save all the effort mentioned.

1. Not an argument. Already happens in FCS every single season in a TWENTY-FOUR team playoff.

2. How is a single-elimination playoff game "a lot less on the line?" Playing for the natty is way more important than winning the conference.

3. You already don't have student atmosphere when games aren't anywhere near campus. Also, fanbases already drive to a college town 6-7 times a year for home games. You're acting like it's some big obstacle when in reality, fanbases would be all over it.

My point was that you can kill two birds with one stone and dragging it out to another week is pointless, after 13 games we will know who are the best 4 teams are, and there is no reason to make players risk their health to prove Bama is better than Wisconsin, Clemson better than OU, or OSU vs Michigan "3 weeks later."

I concede there would be a crowd, again I see it a pointless addition to a good system.

Why wouldn't I? That sounds great. G5 teams will hardly ever have opportunities to make the top 4, and will probably never capitalize on them. P5, G5, and FCS are clearly on different levels, but only P5 and FCS get playoffs.
