Something I noticed during the race, and was waiting for a torrent to check.
>was also waiting for the race thread shitposters to fuck off so we can be aspys

According to Sky, Hamilton made up ~8 seconds by "pitting under the VSC".

But he didn't.
Look at the graphic. The VSC ends as he is entering the pits.

The "pitting under VSC" advantage is that when you're stationary, your opponent is going 80km/h instead of 200-300km/h, so you lose less time.
But when Hamilton was stationary, Vettel should have been at race speed.

I was thinking about that.
Same thing that happened in Monaco GP2 last year.

But I thought the F1 system (different to GP2's) with it's "sector arrival times" was meant to avoid that.

it's a well known fact that after 40 laps tyres pretty much cover the asphalt increasing the performance of soft compounds.

The sector arrival time system won't compensate for the KM/H loss when accelerating from mid-straight.

If he had have been almost anywhere else on track, it wouldn't have been as bad.

Ferrari have for once practically an unbeatable car both in quali and races, yet they keep giving wins away to fucking Mercedes who are in all honesty not even on the same level right now.

Vettel choked half a second in the last sector in quali, Ferrari choked the strategy so fucking hard in the race yet again. Won't comment on the Finns because they are both Barrichello tier right now.

If Ferrari chokes this easy championship I honestly wouldn't even be surprised at this point. And then they probably will forget to develop for 2018 and have another 2016-tier season. I honestly don't know if they even deserve support from fans at this point

>blaming Bottas for "being slow" during this race

He had an engine that was down on power before it blew up anyway, damaged suspension (left wheel wasn't quite straight meaning increased tyre wear, less straight line speed, less grip and having to hold the wheel not quite straight either which hampers you in the corners) and the team put him on a one-stop strategy so that he'd hold Vettel up after the first pitstop phase. He might've had more damage too, Toto wasn't clear.

This is true. T1 was fully his fault though, surprised he didn't get a penalty for effectively ruining 2 drivers' races. Then again the stewards seem to have a "fuck it" approach this year as long as it's not related to ignoring bollards when rejoining a track.

Just a bit too greedy overall. I wouldn't relegate him into a total Massa/Barrichello role just yet

I read once that tyres consume themselves more easily in slower curves. So Pirelli decided to use ultrasoft ones to give enough grip but less durability in Sochi and soft and medium ones in Barcelona.
Technically soft ones are way more durable and work well especially in a track after 40 laps

No, the opposite is true. Long, high speed corners like Curva Grande or Sochi turn 3 cause more degradation because the tyre is slipping more, generating more friction and more heat, both increasing the tyre temperature and grating rubber off like cheese.

Of course, in 40km/h hairpins, where downforce is non-existent, you have plenty of tyre slip too, but it's at a lower speed and travelling less distance so there's not as much in total.
>>
>>75919269
>Supersoft-Soft-Medium for all tracks then. Hard is practically useless and Ultra is a meme aside from maybe Monaco
I think at Baku teams will be free to choose their own set of tyres, but anyway Ultrasoft are not a meme. Take for example that piece of shit of track of Abudabi: since you have low downforce you must use this set to achieve higher grip, or Monaco even if probably they'll go with supersoft and ultrasoft

I mean tangential stresses degrade more the tyres than longitudinal ones. Obviously is the tyres slips more on the side this will affect the durability of it as you said. This happens generally in slower curves or in those where you have lower downforce. Sochi is full of those kind of curves as well as Monaco or Abudabi

I mean it's ok but the AI is fucking terrible (really aggressive and forceful in the overtakes, will spin you out when you block them etc), tire deg is a meme, slipstream is insanely powerful, career mode is not particularly fun. There's endless menus and shit and if you want to make your car competitive you have to do these insanely boring resource point gaining things where you essentially just drive the track with various different objectives. >good races

Great track, almost always bad races aside from a few notable exceptions.

Half the current tracks, Tilke or classic, are total shit for F1 speed cars. Interlagos only gets a pass because it rains there all the fucking time and its at such a critical time in the season (should be the final instead of Abu Dhabi) that everyone is more meme-prone. Suzuka, Spa, Hungary, Monza, Monaco, Canada etc are total snoozefests half the time.

This baffles me as well. Ericsson also unironically overtook Williams and McLaren cars as well.

Wehrlein wasn't even blocking, he was just driving the racing line and Sainz couldn't get past for 1000 laps. In a way I really don't like Sauber but it really wouldn't be too bad to have a tighter midfield that BTFO's shit drivers out of the points even more than it does now.

Granted there was Kimi and Verstappen out on 1st corner, Massa and Alonso sent back in the 1st corner, Bottas retirement. I do think all these cars had the pace to stay in front of the Sauber so in a perfect race he would have finished way outside of the points. Really it just makes me wonder how bad that Toro Rosso really is. Haas is a total joke as well
>>
>>75920286
>Renault
actually not so much

Renault corporate gives them a budget of €200-250m and requires them to find the rest with sponsorship. That's barely any more than Williams' budget, and they have to fund the engine development with that as well.

They'll give them more once they have a more competitive car.

Wouldn't mind seeing a Force India-Renault merger as FI is almost confirmed to be doomed eventually and they do fantastic things with limited budgets.

Hulkenberg is literally Perez-tier (good but probably not a true great) and he's bringing the car to points on a consistent basis. The car isn't bad, its just that Palmer flatters Hulkenberg a lot. Put a true madman in the car and you might even see it on the podium in a meme race.

Ocon is seriously talented. Kek, to think that in Russia, Bob Fernley said we would see Ocon really improve by Silverstone.

Yes, Vandoorne is up against Alonso and has had car issues, but Alonso has too, and Vandoorne has been with the team for a good while, but is really not looking too great.

Maybe junior formula records need to come with a pinch of salt.

he was a part of Lotus' driver academy in 2014 and 2015. He jumped ship to Mercedes before the Renault buyout happened. At the start of 2016, Mercedes loaned him to Renault on the condition that he did some FP1 sessions because they already had Wehrlein and Team Banana needed a reserve driver. That deal ended once Ocon went to Manor.

All the new drivers aside from Ocon are essentially struggling. I think it just goes to show that these current cars are more like what F1 should be. Drivers back in the day would often talk about how they could not comprehend how fast other drivers were going, and basically just fear for their lives and push beyond the limit of what they would ever do if there wasn't a reference of someone else going much faster than they are.

Stroll will hopefully be a case in itself to prove the bad investement that is a paydriver. Stroll and Palmer are going to cost their teams millions of dollars considering how far off the pace of their (not that highly rated) teammates they are. F3 to F1 simply should not happen, and just because Verstappen did it doesn't mean it should be the new norm.

Fucking lol. No mate. Nationalism is EVERYTHING. For as long as humans have existed they have belonged to tribes, groups, societies. Why? Because a group is stronger than an individual. Nations are a natural outgrowth of that. People these days say "the nation is dead!" but they are oh so wrong. Nations aren't going anywhere soon. Even if pan-national alliances grow in stature (e.g. the European Union, the Arab League, etc.), all that means is that they will effectively become the new nations.

Anyway I'll stop now because I'll probably get banned for not talking about sports on the sports board.

So uh... nations are also important from a sporting perspective. You should support your nation's sportsmen because, when shit hits the fan, your nation is who you will rely upon to survive. And a nation that takes pride in itself, which is composed of people who are committed to the defence of the nation, is more likely to survive. If a nation is composed of people who don't care about the survival of the nation, then that nation will get taken over by another.

How does it compare to, say, 2013? Which is the one I have. And it's a pretty good game. Sure the driving physics are not the absolute most realistic, but I think they're realistic enough that it's a fun game to play. Also the fact that it simulates all of the features of a race, from practice to quali to the race, is cool - but of course if you want to just jump in, you can do that too. I recently went through the whole "scenario" mode, which is very fun. You just jump into all these short little scenarios in different races. Good stuff.

The Roman Empire was essentially a nation mate. So was the Assyrian Empire. Even after these things, why do you think it was the French who created nations? After the Romans left Britain, it was taken over by Anglo-Saxons, who then formed seven separate kingdoms throughout Britain - the "heptarchy", as it's called. Each of those kingdoms was essentially a nation.

>>75924007
'yes'

Who knows. But that's the thing isn't it, that's why I feel sorry for him - because what are his options now? The fact that Red Bull have publicly shown the rest of the paddock that they don't want him in their top team doesn't exactly show to the other teams that he's a great buy.

But who knows - he's experienced of course. Maybe he'll replace someone like Magnussen at Haas or even Palmer at Renault, since those guys are both pretty shit. Or Ericsson at Sauber. But probably only if something were to happen to one of those guys. Well he could replace Palmer anyway because Palmer clearly isn't handling things too well.

Fair enough.

Don't get me wrong I like it when underdogs win, I would love to see Bottas winning more, I'd also love to see Ricciardo winning more, and perhaps Max - but right now I'd rather Ric wins instead of Max, because I feel Max is stamping his authority on that team and is sort of taking the wind out of Ric's sails a bit, and I'm hoping Ric can fashion a great career for himself.

But yeah. I still support Lewis for the WDC. Just so I can gloat about Britain being the best, to be honest.

>>
>>75929679
Not necessarily no, if it is historically the most successful team

Ferrari has not won a WDC for years but is still considered the most prestigious team, because of their historical success - therefore they attract the most bandwagoners of all the teams.

Same with Man U - they're currently not so great, but they are historically the most dominant team of the Premier League by far, so they still attract the most bandwagoners (probably. Although I'm sure Arsenal, Man City, Chelsea attract pretty similar numbers)

>>75929963
Very nice, so he'll be driving alongside other people for the first time? I bet he fucking crashes.

>>75930161
Yes.
>>
>>75930161
Okay maybe I should give a fuller answer

If you literally just started supporting Ferrari as a kid because "they're Ferrari!" then yeah you're a bandwagoner.

But if that poster has some special sentimental value, e.g. maybe your dad gave it to you because he supported Ferrari, then I guess that's not so bad.

Supporting them just because they are seen as the most successful team is bandwagoning - although I guess people call that glory hunting, but that's basically the same thing in my book.
>>
>>75930269
You literally can't bandwagon a team while sticking with them through thick and thin. I hate the bandwagon meme with F1 too because unless you're English you probably don't have anything close to a local team, just cause of percentages.

"Formula 1 is changing, and we as drivers could achieve more if we were a unit of 20 athletes," he told Speed Week.

"I think it's ok to have different opinions, but we must unite our sport. We all want more from Liberty and we can do that better if we speak with one voice."

Asked which F1 drivers are missing, Grosjean did not hesitate to pull out his mobile phone.

"I can tell you exactly who is not with us," he said.

"Hamilton, Bottas, Verstappen, Stroll, Massa, Wehrlein, Sirotkin, Celis, Raikkonen, Hulkenberg and di Resta," said the Swiss-born Frenchman.

"When I entered F1, I wanted to be a part of it right away. So I'm a little surprised that so many are not. We're working on it."

it was more than just listing the non GPDA drivers, he specifically said they werent with them in creating this one voice

he's scored points twice out of two races in Formula E though, which puts him on par with Felix Rosenqvist on the "drivers far too shit for F1 who are just quick enough to not be completely blown the fuck out by a competitive driver" list.

JEV is consistently much quicker than GUT (but to his credit, he adapted to le conserve energy meme very quickly), and Felix is on par with, if not slightly faster than, a 40-year-old Quick Nick, which is rather embarrassing for both drivers.

>>
>>75933028
1) Tesla is already bigger than Formula E. What would they benefit by joining the series? When you think about electric cars, they're already the first brand you think of.

2) They're actually really shit at building electric cars that are actually, y'know, GOOD. Their approach isn't to design long-lasting, high-capacity batteries that can withstand sustained periods of discharge or recharge—which is what you need for an electric car that is capable of more than a trip to the grocery shop. Their approach isn't to invest in researching future battery technologies to make their cars better. No, their approach is to put as many batteries as they can muster into the frame of the car, weight and efficiency be damned, and give no further fucks.

Their motors as well are extremely lacklustre and only capable of >le fast acceleration meme.

If they were to enter Formula E, they would be thoroughly exposed for building shitty meme cars with zero engineering potential and would not only be woefully slow, inefficient, overweight and hard to drive but would wreck the brand.

3) They would want to build/manufacture everything, whereas FE is a spec chassis series where you can only manufacture the motor, gearbox, rear suspension/drivetrain and a few other bits and bobs.

4) There's already a motorsports series that uses modified Teslas. They had to strip out everything from the car, put in a bespoke motor, replace the batteries for ones that work and do a shitton of weight-saving.
>>
>>75933054
that doesn't change a thing for tesla's viewpoint

>>75933072
you really think racing would be able to continue if nobody drives anymore?

horse racing would die tomorrow if gambling on it was banned. But people don't tend to gamble on motorsports.
>>
>>75933028

Battery is the same for all teams. Supplied by Williams but the season after next they'll have a new, more powerful and higher-capacity McLaren battery which will, allegedly, eliminate the need to change cars halfway through the race.
>>
>>75933177
>>75933182

>>
>>75933182
>eliminate the need to change cars halfway through the race.

And I imagine the racing will get worse.
>>
>>75933198
Piquet lost his energy saving advantage this year. Either other drivers got wise to his tricks or this year's NextEV is, like Nelson claims, just terribly inefficient. He says that next season's car will be a multiple-race winner, and they'll make the same jump in pace that they did from the previous season.
>>75933204
They're considering forcing mandatory pitstops still. It would be interesting if they introduced a super-duper high speed battery charger you're allowed to use for 30 seconds or whatever in the pitstop, but I don't know enough about that technology or whether it would actually have a significant impact on the battery's level of charge.

>>75933225
>will these car race in real circuits in the future?
No. At least not in the foreseeable future. FE wants street circuits to fit their "bringing racing to the people" mantra rather than making people travel for 2 hours only to get stuck in a traffic jam at a circuit like Silverstone waiting to park. As well as that it's an opportunity to promote the "silent, clean, green eco-friendly" side of things and be able to race in cities that F1 would never be allowed to do because of the noise and environment concerns. (but let's be real, FE is about as eco-friendly as a coal-burning power station since they still have to fly the shit all across the world and use fossil-fuel to generate the electricity and they don't use electric transporters or electric JCBs or anything)

The street circuits also have the advantage of being a lot shorter; so the spectators effectively see more action as there's more laps than on a long track; and the shorter straights means less strain on batteries. Also reduced costs for stuff like barriers and road closures.

>any news about more power

>The street circuits also have the advantage of being a lot shorter; so the spectators effectively see more action as there's more laps than on a long track; and the shorter straights means less strain on batteries. Also reduced costs for stuff like barriers and road closures.
well I guess costs will always be a problem, I'm not so sure on having short circuits make races more exciting for the spectators, especially when everybody bump on each other
