Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors have revolutionized the NBA over the past couple of seasons by heavily utilizing the 3-point shot, and commissioner Adam Silver is just fine with the way the game has evolved.

Speaking to reporters before Game 1 of the NBA Finals, Silver said the rules surrounding the 3-point line and the measurements of the court won’t be changing, while explaining that the game in its current state is the best we’ve ever seen.

"Not anytime soon," Silver said when asked about a potential rule change, "and largely because when we’ve changed the rules in the past — and much of that happened before my time in the game — it was because there was a view that a particular player because of his skill had, frankly, an unfair advantage over other players. It made the game either less enjoyable, less competitive, less aesthetically pleasing.

"I think in this case, as I said, this is the best basketball many of us have experienced in our lifetimes. I think that in some ways Steph’s 3-point shooting becomes an equalizer. Especially given the amount of travel I do outside the United States.

"To me, what’s happening with Steph — and it’s not just young boys, but young girls as well — while he’s by no means small relative to regular-sized folks, by NBA standards he’s a little bit undersized. I mean, he’s smaller than the average player in this league. He’s not particularly physically overwhelming, and I think it broadens the pool in many ways of potential players in this league. Last season, teams averaged 22.4 3-point attempts per game, which was a league record. So far this season, 20 teams are above that mark, and the league average has risen to 23.7 a game. The Los Angeles Lakers and Charlotte Hornets are both taking nearly 10 more threes per game than they did last year, and even the Memphis Grizzlies, who attempted 860 fewer three-pointers than anyone else in the league over the last three seasons, have upped their per-game average by about four attempts.

Perhaps it just took the begrudging admission of Charles Barkley that jumpshooting teams have won more championships than him, but every team in the league appears to be figuring out how it can get more of its shot attempts from behind the arc.

While attempts have increased, though, accuracy has lagged behind; through the first week, the league had made just 33.0 percent of its 3-point attempts. That’s down from 35.0 percent last season (and 36.0 percent in 2013–14), and would be the lowest league average since 1991–92. While it seems unlikely that the league as a whole will continue to shoot this poorly, the combination of increased attempts and decreasing accuracy has been a general trend for awhile. Relative to the expected value of 2-pointers, threes were worth less last season than at any other point in the last decade.

As more and more teams are hunting for them offensively, the job of a defense, theoretically, becomes easier (at least from a planning standpoint). An offense can only create so many high-quality 3-point looks. If the goal is simply to keep taking more threes, that means taking some that are less optimal.

Attempts from the corners have long been the crown jewel of 3-pointers; over the past decade, they have usually been made at rates four to five percentage points higher than above-the-break threes. Generally, this advantage is more about additional space between the shooter and the defender than the shot being closer distance to the basket. However, they have gradually been making up a smaller and smaller share of all three-point attempts.

Even if every team was continuing to make three-point shots at a steady percentage, simply shifting threes from the corners to above the break would decrease the league’s three-point percentage. And if we compare 3-pointers by two other characteristics that we know have a significant effect on value—defender distance and whether they’re off the dribble or catch-and-shoot—we see they are not obvious culprits, either.

Teams are taking slightly more pull-up threes, with the percentage coming from that category rising from 23.6 percent in 2013–14 to 25.2 percent thus far this season (per NBA.com), but—like the decline in the percentage of corner 3-pointers—it is a narrow change. Between that and the average defender distance remaining nearly the same, it’s hard to argue that the decline in three-point accuracy is due to teams forcing shots in less-than-ideal contexts.

However, the data we’ve looked at so far only focuses on the shots themselves. As teams reshape their offenses around three-pointers, more and more players are looking to expand their range. For example, Al Horford had 68 career 3-point attempts coming into this season, and he’s already taken 18 in five games. Ditto for DeMarcus Cousins, who has attempted 10 in three games after only attempting 69 threes across his first 350 career NBA games. In fact, a great deal of the increase in 3-pointers over the past few seasons has come from non-shooters expanding their range.

The graph below looks at the year-to-year changes in 3-point attempts per 36 minutes for each individual player over the past four seasons.

This data set only includes players who played at least 40 games and averaged at least 10 minutes per game in both seasons (or just 10 minutes per game in the case of this season). Obviously, players change their rates from season to season, which is why the dots are scattered both above and below the line.

The colored trend lines are an approximation of the patterns in change. What’s really important is the bubble toward the bottom left-hand corner. Each of the past three seasons have followed roughly the same pattern—players who were not 3-point shooters are the ones seeing the biggest increase in 3-point attempts, year-to-year.

The current status quo likely won’t persist for long. We are still early in the season, when there is room for experimentation. As wins and losses take on increasing importance, teams will likely experiment less with three-point attempts for guys who haven’t been making them. The league average 3-point percentage may be lower than it was last year, but it probably will crawl out of the basement where it sits right now.

Nearly every game now, whether it’s with the Golden State Warriors drilling 19 3-pointers, the Houston Rockets hoisting an average of 40 threes or the New Orleans Pelicans aligning five shooters around the arc, Orlando Magic coach Frank Vogel must rub his eyes and make sure he’s seeing things properly.

``The game is changing before our eyes,’’ Vogel said recently while shaking his head in amazement.

Is it ever changing? It’s changing dramatically in the way NBA teams take and make 3-point shots at a dizzying, record rate.

Take for example the Mike D’Antoni-coached, James Harden-fueled Rockets, who are hoisting on average 40 3-point shots a game and making 14.6 triples a night – both of which numbers will most likely obliterate the all-time NBA records.

The 3-point frenzy doesn’t stop with the Rockets. According to SportingCharts.com, 20 of the league’s 30 teams take at least 30 percent of their shots from 3-point range now. Six teams are averaging at least 30 attempts a game from beyond the arc, four of which would be in the postseason if the playoffs started today. Nine teams are averaging double-digit makes a game – an almost unheard of number just five years ago.

Vogel, who is thought of throughout the NBA as something of a defensive guru, has had to re-think the way he coaches defending foes because of the shift to the shot from 23 feet, 9 inches (above the break) and 22 feet (from the corners). In the past, the first instinct was always to pack the paint and defend the rim. Now, getting out to 3-point shooters – some teams flood the floor with four and five 3-point snipers – is of the utmost importance.

This season, only Houston, Golden State, Cleveland, Boston and the Los Angeles Clippers rank in the NBA’s top 10 in 3-point makes, attempts and accuracy percentage. Not surprisingly, all five teams having winning records and are championship contenders.

Well, you're wrong. The 90s were dominated by Michael Jordan's ISO ball. The ball was his in crunch-time by right. If he chose to pass it, then so be it, but what was expected of MJ was for him to take and make all of the Bulls' clutch shots - and he often did. The triangle offense was not being employed in those moments. So "fundamentals team oriented basketball" really didn't win shit in the 90s.

Well teams are going to keep upping the ante on 3s till shot diversity becomes a thing of the past. The league will change it at some point when it starts hurting the game ascetically.

The whole reason we have this "era" is because the NBA threw away the illegal defense rule to incentivize ball movement.

I doubt anyone wants to watch 30+ teams play the same way by chucking the ball 40-60 times a game just to achieve some statistical meta. Given the history of the NBA I am positive they will change the rules yet again if and when it comes to that.

wew, what a chain of events. i enjoyed the brief glimpse back to 2014 beautiful basketball but they'll devolve into kawhi iso ball real quick again. don't think they'll ever scale down leonard's USG% in favor of ball movement unless leonard actually decides to take his game that way, which i'm not sure he will.

i want pop to start murray and dedmon. murray can bother curry with his length and quickness, just literally annoy him and limit his FOV. doesn't matter if he gets cooked and picks up fouls, mills will play 35 minutes anyway.

slotting dedmon back in would be a GOAT move, he can throw a wrench in the dubs' solid inside play. he's long and quick enough to get his arms up in time for durant and green. dedmon is limited offensively but he's a credible threat for converting around the rim, so the dubs will have to consider sending their only real rim protector in durant inside. love to see him get pounded on offense. make him expound energy and take a bruising at the rim on defense while having to deal with leonard on offense. i don't feel hopeless with green/leonard on curry/thompson and leonard/aldridge/dedmon on durant/green.

aldridge used to have green's number. let's see if he still does. i need a suspension ASAP.
