Well, yeah, there were only 8 teams, but all of the best basketball talent in the country was condensed into those 8 teams. Today the talent per team is diluted.

But there are some similarities between our league now and the 8 team league. 1) The finals contestants can accurately be predicted before the season starts and 2) whoever wins the finals will surely have more hall of fame caliber talent than the average team.

So I think pride in those titles is reasonably justified.
