Other than the BIG games, what are some lesser week 1 matchups that you're still looking forward to? Here's a few of mine, in no particular order.

UMass-Hawaii should be even, if not played at a very high level.

Same for Charlotte and Eastern Michigan

USF-San Jose State could be good depending on how well San Jose has been rebuilding.

Oregon State vs Colorado State should be competitive.

Boston College and NIU could be fun, if NIU got its shit together in the offseason.

Lastly, the defending FCS national champions at ECU should be a tough game. Personally, I hope ECU has it, but it'll be uncomfortably close.

OSU is legally required to be in the same conference, so it would have to be both of them completing the 16 team SEC super conference (unless somebody gets bumped: looking at you, Mizzou).

So what happens to Texas when the Big XII finally implodes under its own weight? Independent status? Or does whatever conference that rises from the ashes take on some high label G5 team to make a new bid for Power 5? Boise State, BYU, Colorado State, etc.

Uh... no they're not. The legislature can tighten the screws to make splitting them undesirable or even counterproductive by doing things such as withholding funding to OU, but they're separate systems with separate regents (there is a state Board of Regents but they have no say whatsoever in athletics) and there's no legislation mandating they remain in the same conference together. That's not to say OU wouldn't do what they could to make it a package deal or there wouldn't be a push from the state to keep them together; both schools have made it clear they'd prefer to stay in the same conference, but if/when the shit hits the fan if it's apparent that OU has an out but OSU doesn't no one would stand in their way. Technically the governor can veto such a move if they think it's not in the state's best interests, but I could only see that happening if one school is blatantly trying to screw the other.

Unless they make a run at the Big 10 (never mind an invite, they wouldn't even consider OSU) I can't imagine OU not trying to shop them and OSU as a package deal and only going alone if it became apparent no one was interested in taking them both. A good-faith effort to bring OSU along and maybe an agreement to keep Bedlam as an annual game in football and basketball if that failed would in all likelihood be enough to placate both the legislature and the governor.

I had that same article up while replying. I was ~95% sure there was no legal tie but wanted to double-check.

At this point I think OU is done with the Big 12 and there's no way they'd ever agree to extend the Grant of Rights or stay past its expiration assuming they don't find an out before then. When they do eventually jump I'm sure they'll do everything in their power to bring OSU with them but the other conferences refusing to play ball on that front isn't going to keep them in the Big 12.

Considering who was available, the MVC's desire to stay at 10 members, its status as a non-football conference (which would be a huge disincentive if not an outright dealbreaker to schools with football programs who are all-sport members of another conference), and Valpo's relative success in basketball over the past 20-25 years it's probably the best move they could have made. This doesn't come close to replacing Wichita State, but it's the same situation as when they replaced Creighton with Loyola a few years ago; you're unquestionably bringing in someone worse than the school that just left, but out of everyone who would realistically accept an invitation I can't imagine who would be a better addition from an athletic standpoint while still being at least something of a cultural and regional fit.
