In competitive running, having someone running with you or in front of you to break the win makes a huge difference. Thus in most major races, there are designated "pacemakers" who run with the leaders until they get tired and then drop out.

Most marathons are run where the only pacemakers you can have are ones who start the race, so after 10-12 miles they're all tired and drop out.

This one they're going to be subbing pacemakers in an out so they keep going the desired pace the entire race.

They're also running it on a very flat loop, they have water stations designed so the runners don't have to slow down to get water, and a couple other bells and whistles.

Also they're wearing some special shoes that have extra bounce or something.

Current world record is 2:02:50, they're trying to see if with "perfect conditions" a human can break 2 hours.
