The penultimate night of the 2017 Betway Premier League round robin phase comes from the Steel City as Sheffield hosts four tungsten tussles.
Beginning the evening are the already-qualified Peter Wright and the doomed Adrian Lewis. In the weekend's Players Championship events, Clownman hit a 9 darter against Michael Smith on Sunday but won neither event. Wright secured his first trip to the O2 last time out in the PL, and a defeat of the Fat Man is needed to challenge for the top spot. Lewis managed to throw away all his playoff hopes with two disastrous defeats last week - the latter an Autism Express whitewash - and a failure to win will yet again eliminate him..
Raymond van Barneveld then plays Dave Chisnall with both men still in contention to make it to London. Barney hasn't picked up any points since the opening week of the playoff phase, while Chizzy has surprisingly not lost since March. Based on form, dim Dave (who was at one stage six points behind RVB) is surely going to overtake him; however, a Dutch victory eliminates the St. Helens simpleton.
The possible third man to be confirmed for the O2 follows in an inconsistency derby between Gary Anderson against James Wade. Gando battered Barney last week and claimed PC9 on Sunday, but he hasn't put consecutive victories together since March, and to secure his London date a win is needed, although a draw may be enough. For Wadey, defeating Snackpot last week kept his playoff chances alive but with no back-to-back victories all season, this may be a match too far.
Closing the evening is a clash between the current GOAT and the former GOAT in Michael van Gerwen and Phil Taylor. MVG won Saturday's PC with a 9 darter in the final, and claimed 3 points in his PL double-header: two more tonight and he tops the table yet again. Pheel was humbled by Wright last week and hopefully it happens again, though a Taylor win could confirm the O2 four a week early.

The final of the 2013 Players Championship Finals changed darts.
>Defending champion, Phil Taylor, who had a superb 2013 in winning the World Championship, the UK Open, the World Matchplay, the Sydney Darts Masters, the World Grand Prix, the Championship League, the Masters and the Grand Slam of Darts, looked on course to win the 2013 Players Championship also, when he led Michael van Gerwen 6–3 in the final. However, Taylor then fell victim to one of van Gerwen's purple patches as van Gerwen came back to win 11–7 and take the 2013 Players Championship title.
Had MVG lost that final, he wouldn't dominate for the foreseeable future.

>tfw didn't even realise it's over already
Welp, goodnight.
And that disastrous Taylor interview ends a night that, like the week before Judgement Night, renders the final week largely irrelevant.
Adrian Lewis's PL campaign ended in yet another self-inflicted shambles with a thumping by an average Peter Wright. Despite coming back from 2-0 down to tie it up, Snackpot won no further legs, missing one dart at both D14 and D7 and then not having another dart at a double. Once again, Lewis is embarrassing himself by playing so badly when he can play so much better.
Dave Chisnall has an outside chance at making it to the O2 after edging out Raymond van Barneveld in a last leg decider. Eventually winning with a 109 average, Chizzy's highlight was a huge 142 at 2-2 with RVB on a 16 finish to go 3-2 ahead. Barney got it back to 4-4 and eventually 5-6 but didn't even get down to a finish in the last leg as he also exited the tournament.
Gary Anderson secured his spot at the O2 with an incredibly scrappy win over James Wade. The World #2 averaged under 80 in the early stages of the fixture and missed a total of 21 doubles but even his eventual 94 match average proved too much for the Machine, who missed 14 attempts of his own at a finish. The bipolar one never really challenged at any point in the season and this loss confirmed his PL exit.
Phil Taylor sprung a surprise on Michael van Gerwen to leave the top of the table still undecided and gift the Autism Express only his second TV defeat since the CL. MVG went 2-1 up after losing throw in the opener but 2 missed darts at D8 saw Taylor go 3-2 up and only drop one more leg. The Prowler's 50% finishing rate, including a smart double double 96 and a killer 90, proved too much even for a 103 averaging MVG and all but closed off the top 4.
The Granite City of Aberdeen hosts the final league night of this year's PL, with these fixtures:
>Dave Chisnall v James Wade
>Phil Taylor v Adrian Lewis
>Peter Wright v Raymond van Barneveld
>Michael van Gerwen v Gary Anderson
See you then.
