Another good tip: call a foul on your defender everytime you touch the ball

watch film of stephen curry and copy everything he does.

1. Work on your footwork. Defense is all about being able to shuffle from side to side, stepping up to shooters when they're about to release and standing strong if someone is posting you up

2. At the very least offensively, set picks and learn to rebound. Both require strength and toughness but once you learn how to do both you'll be a valuable member of your team

3. Make open 3s. If you can't shoot, learn. Nothing is more frustrating to a PG than a guy who can't shoot open 3s (if he has no other skills)

it should be patently apparent that lacking skill in shooting can be mitigated by being decent at defense, rebounding, or layups and I've never met anyone who didn't appreciate that help in winning a game

Practice dribbling/footwork a lot until you can handle the ball comfortably without getting it stolen. Find a reliable way of scoring (short midrange is the best place to start if you're not good with contact)

Play defense/rebound if you're still awful at dribbling/scoring. You don't need to be playing 100% effort defense, just do something if you're in a good position to break up a play.

Footwork. Inside positioning and a floater. Master these things and you're unstoppable

As it was said before, if you have limited skills, it's easier to focus on obtaining a good defense, and concentrate on rebounds.
Players who can do that are always welcomed in any pick up team (at least here in France)

A few tips for defending

>Train your stamina
>Lower your gravity center
>Always defend between your player and the rim
>Focus on the opponent's torso, not on his arms or legs, not on the ball. That way, you won't bite in your opponent's feints
>DON'T JUMP on pump fakes. 99% of the time if you have good positioning you fift your arms it's more than enough to prevent the opponent from scoring efficiently. You can always put your hand in front of his eyes if your short on the block
>Learn the timing to an efficient chase down block (it's almost always LATER than what you're thinking if you're a begginer)
>If you defend on the perimeter be cautious to screens. If you don't play at a high level, it's almost always better to go under the screen than over the screen if you didn't see it in time.
>If you're taken in a screen, anounce IMMEDIATELY if you want to switch or to keep your player

And the most important one imo

>Defend BEFORE your player gets the ball. Do not let him get in the triple threat position or it will be too late if you're facing a good player. A good defense can actually prevent your opponent to even touch the ball

A few tips on rebounding

>Focus on your opponent, not on the ball. Keep him outside the paint with your body to get the better position
>Once you get your rebound don't wait for ages, if your PG is good he will do a move to call the ball, give it to him
>After an offensive rebound, the best option is going up again for a shoot most of the time. Don't hesitate.

General tips

>Anounce the screens for your teamates
>do not interfere if your teammate has an obvious advantage on isolation. Give him room
>Use screens far from the ball to free teammates under the basket. It gives very easy baskets
>Always have your hands ready on offense. ALWAYS.
>If you post up, have a quick look on the opposite side and the back door just before cathing the ball.
>If you have to chose between two obvious options in attack. Make your mind quickly, stick to it, and don't look in the direction your chosing

Basketball is hard. Play Tennis instead. It's more fun.

General shooting pointers

>focus on the hoop. Visualization does help
>as much as possible, keep your body balanced. Fadeaways are cool, but they're not something beginners should go for.
>shooting motion should be one fluid motion. Any hitches tend to disrupt the power/consistency of your shot.
>try to put some arc in your shot. Practice shooting straight away from the basket so you can get a feel for the use of the board as well.
