It's not the Midwest, it's the types of universities that make up the B1G. Michigan, Michigan State, Rutgers, Minnesota, and Madison are all in that conference. The states might be conservative but the schools themselves are very liberal except for maybe Indiana and Penn State. And the Big East is a Jesuit conference, which is why it's important to mention it.
