Sometimes he flips the puck out but it's usually in situations where they need to clear the zone and he doesn't want to give it away at the blue line. Most of his passes are just lame exit passes because if anything his partner is the one that's the 4th man deep, but he makes the occasional savvy pass in the o-zone—he just doesn't get put in those situations very often. And as far as statistically, I don't really know what you're citing. Stats like Corsi, depending on where you're getting them from, don't often adjust for factors like strength of teammates and opposition. Advanced hockey statistics aren't as polished as they are in baseball (and inherently aren't as reliable due to the radically different nature of the game), hardly better than relying on +/- as an accurate picture of how that player affects the play. Not to mention they measure all skaters the same way.

The difference between McD and Girardi with respect to snow angels, is that McD usually does it as a last ditch effort; all of his options are exhausted, and that's how you should do it. On the other hand, Girardi is very liberal with his snow angels: he likes doing it as if it's the first thing you should do when it's not. Putting your body on the ice like that takes you out of the play; as such, you should only do it you really think you can disrupt a play. He's been burned so many times on 2v1s by going to the ice when you simply just need to pressure the puck-carrier enough and have the goalie do his thing.

Maybe a different player makes that unlikely play to break it up, but there's usually only one guy per team who has the gumption to do that with regular success.
