Just read about it on the Gazza, still can't believe it.
Read yesterday he would have been the leader of Astana at the Giro instead of Aru.

As a motorcyclist I know how often the other road users feel about them but we all must never forget how weak they are compared to cagers and bikers.

Apparently some imbecile with a van didn't give him way.

professional cycling is easily one of the most difficult and demanding sporting endeavors in the world. The marque Tours span 2,500+ miles and over 20,000+ meters of climbing in three weeks, with at most 2 or 3 rest days. They fly down alpine descents at 60+ mph with marginal protection, rain or shine. I really cannot think of any sport that is as brutal at the highest-level as cycling is.

because that's what the first impression is
truck ran this stop sign (or started too early invading the street) and Scarponi crashed on its front/right side, then got thrown across the street
he died on the spot

the only fault Scarponi might have had was speeding, which is kind of inevitable for a top level cyclist
there really should be more secure areas where road cyclist could train safely

>The Italian had also faced doping sanctions. He was banned for 18 months in July 2007 following the long-running Operation Puerto doping scandal, while he served a three-month suspension from the end of 2012 after working with the banned physician Michele Ferrari.

I have zero knowledge of pro-cycling, but how can people tolerate that? Obviously it's sad that he died, but why are people talking forgiving obvious cheaters? Not just that, they don't shame them publicly, they even honor them like the Serie A with the 1 minute of silence this weekend.
>>
>>75417561
I think cycling fans generally watch their sport with their eyes open regarding doping, unlike football, athletics, tennis, Am. football fans etc.

No one applauds doping, but it was a big part of the sport for a long time and will continue to be so. We can still celebrate a nice person like Scarponi even if we disapprove of what he did.

I'm sure people would still celebrate the great Barcelona team of the past decade even if the truth about their doping came out.
>>
>>75417506
jesus
>>
>>75417614
this. Only delusional Sky-bandwagoners think cycling is clean (which is ironic since Sky are obviously dirty as fuck). I personally don't really care, I want entertaining races. The problem is when a team like Sky or US Postal are on such a superior program that they can boss every race and dominate every mountain stage.
>>
>>75417614

What kind of image are they broadcasting in the world though? Dope as long as no one cares or finds out? Even if we find out, we'll forgive you for skewing the sport itself and turning everything into a joke?
How can people take a sport seriously when the playing field isn't even? If they want to use those substances to increase performance, just distribute them equally and make them mandatory.
>>

we're not mourning the athlete, we're mourning the person, but since he was a stand out personality in the sports world it is the sports world that will be honoring him
also his doping ban was't even for taking PEDs (he was never found guilty of it through tests) as you can read in your own post, and we learned our lesson about publicly shaming supposed dopers with Pantani

>>
>>75417561
Because we know that everyone dopes. They still suffer just as much on the bike. The only difference is that they're going slightly faster than they would without it. People start getting to the barricades when one person/team blatantly overdoes it and starts to dominate. Even worse if they act like a grade A cunt while doing so like certain guy who's missing a testicle. US Postal overdid it. Sky is getting dangerously close to that. Only the most hardcore skywagoners still believe that their marginal gains are clean.

>>75417698
Are you aware that athletes dope just as much in every single sport? Cycling isn't any different from literally any other sport. They just take a different approach to it. All the major team sports just don't test the athletes for shit or have plenty of substances that are allowed. Some other sports just hide the possible positives from their start athletes.
>>
>>75417506

i can honour every cyclist cause its the toughest pro sport i don't really care if they doped or not it's still a performance every amateur envies - sitting on your bike for 5-7 hours and that for 3 weeks with 20.000 meter altitude difference in the grand tours
>>

>it's pretty much murder
No, it's not if you use a car.
>>
>>75417786

>Are you aware that athletes dope just as much in every single sport?
[citation needed]

There's also a difference in how effective it is. Take football for example. You can't really cheat there, because it boils down to 90% skill. Cycling, as far as I can tell as a layman, is 98% endurance. That is something you can effectively improve.
I would be seriously offended if I were a fan of such a sport and hoping to see how far a "clean" human body can go, but instead got served with that.
>>
>>75417732
i'll ask for your permission next time i wanna feel sad or happy, since maybe that's not the emotion you, the Lord of Edge, had planned for me
>>
>>75417698
I think they broadcast the most realistic image of any sport.
It would be easy to get rid of bad doping stories: Just abolish the biological passport and stip doing out-of-competition testing or give athletes secret suspensions and pretend they are injured like they do in football and tennis.

Athletes in all sports dope. Cycling just takes it more seriously than any other sport.
>>
>>75417506

Jesus. This is like something from a movie. Looks like he's still clipped in too
>>
>>75417887
I'm pretty sure those super tight, constant passes and triangles Barcelona do are much easier in the 85th minute if you are on a regime of blood doping/EPO or similar.
You can't seperate technical skills from endurance like you are trying to do.

Are you trying to say that improving your endurance doesn't bring in any benefits in the second half of a football game. Yes it's a game of skill more than cycling but being faster, stronger and more durable than your opponent is still a massive advantage. PEDs also massively help with injuries making you heal considerably faster and being overall stronger might even save you from suffering some injuries in the first place.

If you think footballers who have ten's of millions, or clubs who have hundreds of millions on the line are clean then you're pretty naive.
>>
>>75417977
Yeah I suppose you're right, I never said I didn't think it was sad btw people were only assuming that. But it feels hypocritical coming from the board that always laughs when people die, it's not like just because you don't know them those other people were any less important to others.

>>75418035
This.
>>75418044
You can't ask me to have much sympathy for some spic who used to play football (a crime in itself) before killing 3 people that hanged himself.
>>75418189
I don't think it's "close" to europeans. I think people simply respect cyclists here. No one could win a race by themselves, most cyclists will do a hiddne job for all their career and never get in the spotlight, even though they're not much "slower" than the team captain. Cyclists are down to earth and humble people, that's why they're beloved.
>>
>>75418659
Yes, I think your last point is very important. Cyclists are accessible and available to the public in a way that athletes in no other pro sport are.

I have a much better picture of who Scarponi was or Michael Valgren is as a person than Messi or Lahm.

Both the fact that they are literally and physically accessible, but also that the sport itself tends to humanise them when they are left naked on theor own on a mountain.
>>
>>75418659
>No one could win a race by themselves, most cyclists will do a hiddne job for all their career and never get in the spotlight,
This. Cycling is the ultimate team sport and a huge sacrifice. That's why I respect every rider in the peloton.
Shit, even if I were doped up on EPO and testosterone, I wouldn't even be close to being able to ride at their pace. Doping isn't everything, it still takes a lot of training.
>>
>>75418715
And once you go ride up the same mountains for the first time the amount of respect you have for them massively skyrockets from whatever you had before that.
>>
>>75418715
>the sport itself tends to humanise them
Yeah, this is a key point.
>>
>>75417150
>there really should be more secure areas where road cyclist could train safely

Don't know how it is in Italy, but here in America you have to give Cyclist 3 feet of clearance but cyclist are told to obey the rules of traffic.

>>75418892
we don't have the three feet law here yet sadly, but that still wouldn't have prevented this accident

we should seriously have more bicycle lanes, more roads closed to traffic, cyclists are way too endangered on regular roads
>>
>>75418981
I just spray them with concentrated sulphuric acid never fails lel
>>
>>75419008
>we don't have the three feet law here yet sadly,
It's a stupid law. What you need is common sense. Don't drive or ride too fast and leave some space when you overtake cyclists and just fucking look left and right when you're at a stop. That's it.
>>
>>75419110
This. Having a 3 feet passing rule doesn't do anything if the attitudes of drivers are shitty towards cyclists. Educating drivers and trying to improve their attitude towards cyclists would be much more useful.
>>
cyclists shouldnt be allowed on the fucking road, nothing but a hazard
>>
>>75419194
It goes both ways.
I'm a biker and I live in the alps, I can't predict to find cyclist in the middle of the road in a blind corner.
I respect them but they have to understand they're not the only road users.
>>
>>75417150

>>75419194
and cyclist (not the pro ones but a lot of idiot kids) should learn to put their fucking hands on their handlebar and not act like faggots cycling without hands (this at least here in italy, fucking teens acting like niggers on bike)
>>
>>75419253
>>75419358
Absolutely. Can't expect drivers to act responsibility while acting like idiots yourself.
>>
The best way to make drivers respect cyclists is to make everyone a cyclist.
Even if you yourself doesn't ride regularly, your kids, mom, wife, gf etc. does ot every day, so cyclists don't become a specific group of people, but basically everyone from a crown princess to a five year-old child.

Basically invest a lot of money in bicycling infrastructure and remove hills and move to a more temperate climate.
>>

Which leads us to obvious question:

What's the casualty rate (per capita) of cyclists in country such as Netherlands, where everyone drives a bike?

:(
I'll remember you

The fucking last impeccable Euro Cyclist.

yes pretty much, seems like he was going along that turn (dunno if right to left or the other way) and the truck stuck out from the road with the stop sign while he was passing by, probably at speed too
it's something i'm making up with what i've heard from the news, looking at the truck, the body's position and the road, so don't take my word for granted

A quick skim reveals that around 30 cyclists get killed per year in Denmark, where most people ride.
We are a country of 5,5m, I'm not good at math.

By comparison, the number of people deliberately murdered annually is usually around 50 here.

People who commute by cycling are 40% less likely to die than cagers. That's in the UK. And some Danish research came to a conclusion that commuting on a bike saved an obscene amount of money in health care.

They should all dope or no dope, not 5 guys on superstuff. All I want, are races like the past cobbled classics or:
>Long range attacks in grand tours like based Contador, Landis 2006, A.Schleck 2011.
>More riders like ET-Ricco / Gilbert 2011 / Contador.
>Every day attacking like crazy.
>Giro 2015
>Cancellara's last KM in the TDF like 10 years ago against a sprinting peleton.

Those things will be remembered.

This is such a shame, poor dude. I'm an amateur cyclist in USA and characters like Michele are few and far between, so even though I've never met the dude it's hard not to feel like I know him after watching him race for so long. )-:

'He was given a Bianchi bike for his first church communion and started racing when he was eight years old with a local club. His family sacrificed their weekends to support him and he won often, with the junior Italian national title at the age of 17 one of the most significant victories of his early years.'
