fine, I'm moving my question here from my kill Indy thread:
>will Fernando learn quickly? will he have speed in the race? if he's successful at Indy, will McLaren consider joining the series as a full time team?
question about the "Triple Crown of Motorsport", i.e. win Monaco GP, win LeMans 24 hour, win Indy 500
does LeMans only count if you win overall, like LMP1? or does a best in class win count, like GT1 or 2
>>75405508
There's nothing official about it. Purists will say you need to win overall at Le Mans but a GTE-Pro win would basically mean the same to me. It's not how it used to be and almost impossible to do because of how different the progressions are now. There's also the less prestigious triple crown of endurance which would be overall wins at Le Mans, Daytona, and Sebring.

Barring an accident I don't think there's any reason for Alonso to finish outside the top 10 or even the top 5 if the "greatest driver in F1" meme still hold true. He's a very talented driver running for a good team (who usually run exceptionally well at Indy) who is being supplied a car by the better of the two manufacturers. As much as I love Indy I think the racecraft required is largely blown out of proportion since like 90% of passes in the current car are slipstreaming out of a corner and making a pass on the straights.
The only areas I foresee Alonso having any difficulty will be in setting up the car and getting use to running closely behind other cars to set up passes. Both of these issues will be remedied during Indy's 2 weeks of testing, Even if Alonso can't figure the car out himself he effectively has 5 teammates to steal data from and similarly will have 5 teammates to learn to draft with.
That said, I expect him to crash at least once during testing as all rookies seem to do. That's not the end of the world however, since after the wreck he'll finally know the limits of the car. Watch /f1/ flip a shit though.
>>75405237
>>75406598
On your last point, I think there's a very interesting dynamic going on in the Mclaren marketing department right now. The US is an expanding market for them (a Mclaren dealership just got built down the road from me, for example) and it would make sense for them to want some genuine exposure outside of their literally unknown Pirelli World Challenge entries. I suspect that Mclaren's target demographic in the US was already pretty familiar with the brand via Formula 1. Of course, the last 3 years in F1 have been nothing but bad exposure, so they may be looking for a new way to paint the brand in a positive light. Partnering with Andretti for the 500 is the perfect solution, since it requires minimal effort on the part of Mclaren while it ties back to their historic roots and allows them to make the Mclaren-Honda partnership look like it wasn't complete shit. Even if Alonso leaves, I would not be surprised if part of the backroom dealings was for Alonso to take Stefan Wilson's seat and then Mclaren to throw up backing for Stefan in 2018.
Don't see it becoming a full season ride though. At the most, maybe they will also run a car for the GP of Indy.
>>75406641
part of the deal with Stefan Wilson stepping aside for Alonso to take his ride was for Wilson having an IndyCar ride, possibly full time, for 2018.

Glad that BMW moved away from the red/blue double stripe shit they were doing in ETCC / WTCC with the E90's.
I'm interested to see how the M6 will go next month - last year the M6 was all powerful early in the season, destroyed everyone at the Nur 4hr race and got slapped with a BOP penalty so hard that they were destroying turbos inside of 3hrs into the 24hr race. Hopefully they can hide their cards long enough to be on level pegging with the AMG GT3 and the R8 to avoid the AMG precession last year's race was (after the rain and fog heh).

Of course there is, manufacturers sell a ton of cars, pro drivers can make money out of it too either by coaching/partnering gentlemen drivers or by landing a factory seat. Even with the rising costs, it still has the best value for the money in motorsports
>>75446672

>>75446648
>is there ANY good money to be made in GT3 racing?
As an entry team? No. All the money comes from sponsors that fund the operation for a season or two.
The reason why GT3 took off over the past few years was because it's relatively cheap form of racing that rich amateur drivers can realistically pick up the tab for a seat and live out their motorsport wet dream in a real race competition. Manufacturers love it not just because it's cheap which means more customer can afford them, but also because the cars are distinctive from each other which makes brand recognition more evident.

Well, Ratel pretty much sired this modern era of GT racing as far back as the Venturi one-make series back in the early '90s which eventually helped fill the first GT field at the '93 LM24 since 1986 and he was the "R" in the BPR that later became the FIA GT series in '97 which was run by his organization. He also helped make the Spa-24 relevant again. Suffice to say he is THE guy for show-running European-based GT racing. Also you have to remember that that much of his time is spent focused precisely on drawing in his rich buddies so that they can pretend to be racecar drivers.

Same thing happened the next day when Buscher won it except it happened during the race instead of before it.
They don't really take any chances since a fan got killed by lightning at Pocono in 2015 because the track waited way too late to clear fans out after a storm warning and the family sued. Can someone help a dumb American that got hooked to F1 last year and wants to watch more motor sports? GT cars interest me but there's a lot of competitions and not really a clear best. Which ones are the most entertaining or highest quality to watch, and what other auto sport competitions do F1 fans like other than IndyCar?

The very best series in the world, in terms of pure competition and entertainment is Super GT. Below that theres the IMSA TUDOR United Sportscar Series, the Blancpain Endurance Series that you can see in the webms above and the World Endurance Championship.
BTCC is also very entertaining.
F1 fans usually follow the other single seater series like Formula 2/3/4.

F1 fans seem to stay pretty insulated and only watch F1, and maybe some branch into GP2 support races.
>>75462400
The great thing is that the races aren't normally overlapping. So Super GT is fun but only 8 races a year. IMSA has a great mix of P2, GTE/2, and GTD/3 and ~10 races per car but sometimes the cars and classes have their own races. Continental Tire Challenge is the support race to IMSA Weathertech and that's where you'll see production cars like Mustangs, Caymans, Miatas, and Mini Coopers going head to head in 2 classes with the top class next year adopting full GT4 regs. There's also the Spa 24 Hours, Nurburgring 24 Hours, and 24 Hours of Le Mans coming in the next few months that you'll hear about if you pay attention to these threads.
Other races worth watching are WEC, Indycar, Super Formula, BTCC, sometimes Euro F3, Formula 2/GP3, and Macau GP. Sometimes Australian Supercars is a fun series and sometimes the races are boring.

Still light rain and drizzle in the area continuing but rain will die down as the day progresses, so they could get the Air Titans out before the race. Some campgrounds flooded last night people had to go in to help Campers out so the command may be moved back to allow for Campers that stayed to move onto BMS grounds.
They are insistent that the race will go today and will run night if they need to.
>>75472763
>rain probably washed that sticky shit off the track so chances are low
Apparently it would be too cold to apply the VHT anyway and it's not necessary as BMS added it to make the bottom groove faster and try add multiple grooves last year. It's not essential. They will still run it, but it means that it will be like old Bristol so lots of aggressive bump and running and running the top instead of running multiple lines.
actually kind of happy bristol was postponed, indy race yesterday was fun and now more racing today right after i finish class, not too bad to be h
OK, so thanks for helping me out, but I have one more question. How do you guys watch the really long races? I'm sure most of us don't just have 12 or 24 hours free to watch, do you just watch specific parts? And if you do, how do you know which ones are important to see?

how's the weather looking in Bristol right now?
>>75478169
Better than expected. Morning was dry enough that BMS was able to grind some rubber and put a slight coat of VHT on the bottom groove but it's likely not going to be as effective. Showers are approaching the area and may hit during Stage 1 but the chance of rain diminishes as the race goes on.
It's looking like we're good for racing, but rain delays during Stage 1 and 2 are possible.

>the racecraft required is largely blown out of proportion
No, it's not.
High speed oval racing is all about understanding the draft, and how to use it to induce drag on your opponents, while reducing drag on your own car. You don't see F1 cars side-drafting each other, but you see it constantly with Indy cars when they run the ovals, and this is why Alonso is likely to have problems running with most of the Indy vets. They'll draft behind him enough to get a run for the pass, or to get themselves close enough to side-draft him and slow him down for the pass, and this will frustrate him and result in mistakes IMO.
>The only areas I foresee Alonso having any difficulty will be in setting up the car and getting use to running closely behind other cars to set up passes.
You mean "racing", which is something that isn't done that often in F1 due to the fact that the cars in the series are so imbalanced.
If anything, Alonso is going to be a danger to the other competitors as he's more likely to do stupid shit that'll get cars loose in a corner that could instigate a crash...at 200+ MPH no less.
Regardless, I hope he does well.
>>75462400
>GT cars interest me but there's a lot of competitions
In the U.S., Indy and the IMSA series are both pretty good. Then you have the 24 hour races at Spa, Lemans, and Nurburgring that are great. Last years LeMans will be remembered for a loooong time.
Down under, the Ausfags V8 super cars series is pretty good, especially when they, or the GT cars, run at Bathurst.
Then there's NASCAR, which is one of the most competitive series out there, and usually puts on a pretty good race in every series they run.
Just look for the motorsport general that gets put out here usually on thursdays or fridays. There's also usually a general for any given race on the day of the race.

NASCAR is fucked up, at least for 2018
>>75492520
You could see on Sunday after the wreck that he was kinda done with it. Hope he gets another restrictive plate win this season.
Who gets the 88 now? William Byron needs another year in Xfinity and I imagine Hendricks wants him in the 48 when Jimmie retires. Alex Bowman seems the most logical option unless they can swipe Larson away
>>75492520
>>75492856
>tfw he's just gonna retire and do nothing
At least Gordon went on to win the Rolex 24
>>75492926
Gordon was 3x the racer jr ever was.
>>75492921
>>75492921
Byron needs about two more years and Hendrick seems like they are going to wait out the 5 or the 48 (Jimmie seems like he's going to call it a day immediately if he gets 8). It's very likely going to be Bowman to the 88.
Plus it's really unlikely Larson's gonna leave CGR while he has a great car and the whole reason he joined CGR was because Gnassi had faith in him as a racer instead of the sponsors he could bring (Which is why he passed on SHR). If Hendrick does bring in another driver. They would probably try poach Bubba Wallace as he's in dead end situation at RFR with no sponsor willing to sign on because RFR is still fucking dumb and seriously outperforming his equipment against cup drivers compared to Larson or Blaney who have great race winning equipment now and have no real reason to move.
It's 99% Bowman though.
>>75492926
They have been deliberate with their wording saying he was retiring from Cup series. I bet he's going to do some Xfinity and Truck races through the season while running Jr motorsports.
Just wondering
Now that JR is gone, who will be the next popular driver in NASCAR?
>>75493022
Chase Elliot probably but not by much like Jr was
>>75493022
It's her time
>>75493022
Blaney or Chase.
>>75493089
She's likely retiring at the end of the year as well because her contract is up with SHR and looks like neither side wants to re-sign. Which has SHR fucked because Cole Custer is about 2-3 Xfinity seasons away from being ready for the 10.
>>75492520

>>75492520
brian france on suicide watch
>>75493235
Blaney doesn't really have a reason to leave Wood Bros yet since the car is great and they have an alliance with Penske. Plus JGR is struggling this year and Kenseth's 4th place finish at Bristol was their highest so far across all their drivers so who knows how long that will last. Plus by the time Kenseth actually retires they will likely have Christopher Bell ready to fill.
>>75493235
Erik Jones is the driver in line for the next opening at JGR however the Furniture Row cars are outperforming JGR every week and Jones has sponsors in the 77 so the question begs to answer is why would he want to leave Furniture Row?
I don't expect the Gibbs cars to be bad all season but similar to Larson at Gannasi why leave when you have fast cars already

The racing last season was better than the year before, and this season has been just as good, if not better. Blaney and Elliot have been putting on a hell of a show as rookies, as has new guy Larson, and hell, Ryan Newman won a race this year....Ryan Newman.
If the sport dies, it's not because of the racing, it's because racing no longer appeals to people. Regardless of Junior leaving, imo, things are looking up in NASCAR.
RIP in peace NASCAR. It was a good run until the downie took over and ruined everything
>>75496201
this may very well be true
Ratings and track attendance is going to tank bad. People here severely underestimate the amount of Jr fans all over.
Those people who were fans of Sr and then Jr are never going to switch to Larson or Elliot. They're just going to stop watching.
Junior for hostile takeover from the France family fucking WHEN
>>75496949
They will switch to Jeffry Earndh-Hahahahahahhahahahah
At the same time, Jr. said he's not leaving the sport. He's just not driving so I'd imagine if he promotes the next gen of drivers. He could have a positive impact that way cause the one thing he's been really cool about the last few years is promoting other drivers and saying "I'm old, you should follow these guys cause they are going to be the future"
Oh and it's Alex Bowman's birthday today. Not sure anyone caught that.

Nah.
There's some pretty talented young buck already in the mix, and they've actually improved the racing for the past 2 years, so I think the future looks alright for NASCAR.
They, and every other motorsport series, just need to latch onto streaming their races, and giving fans the opportunity to watch in-car cams for all the drivers and listen to the scanners. I'd actually pay for that shit for NASCAR, IMSA, and super V8's.

She already did an interview saying she wants to win one race and make the playoffs and doesn't care about the money (Cause she's set for life between herself and Ricky) or anything else. Going to Roush won't help that no matter how much Bayne has been a liability this year. Never mind RFR can't get consistent sponsorship because Roush thinks it's still the golden days and they can charge six figures.Fucking SHR can't get consistent sponsorship even. Clint Bowyer is still riding unsponsored. Danica's just holding over some of Tony's sponsors (Though that lawsuit with Nature's Bakery was a pain in the ass)

>>75506504

Don't say that too loud, brian france might hear it
Though I believe theres huge untapped potential in streaming. Twitter got 2 million people watching their NFL games. Of course that number is ridiculously optimistic/almost impossible for a motor race, but even 10% of that would be amazing.
Another example, you can take over the youtube homepage, literally the 2nd biggest website in the world, for about 400k per day. I honestly believe a single day of that could reach more people than an entire year of marketing efforts of any series bar F1. Imagine something like WEC taking over the youtube homepage for 24 hours before and during a race, clicking the ad would take you to the live stream.
Now with the above in mind, I'd like to remind you that Nissan had enough money to buy a Super Bowl commercial. Those cost well over 4 million dollars. With that amount of money you could do the above for every single WEC round. Even without Nissan, the WEC could easily pool that kind of money through all the other teams, Of course a single factory P1 could fund it all but no one would agree to that.

I don't see NASCAR losing viewers just because Dale Jr. retired. That implies the redneck fanbase will change the channel to soccer or something. Some people like to drink and watch the race on Sunday afternoons and that is not going to change. These are the kind of people who are typically set in their ways.
Most Dale Jr. fans I know also like Harvick or some other driver. They liked Dale but knew he couldn't win, so they supported one of the elite guys. Most Jr. fans will still have a driver next year. Probably someone with a personality like Bowyer.
