Just started getting into chess about a month ago. I fucking suck. I've only played 2 of my friends who knew how to play but weren't good, so I beat them, but I lose to the computer almost every time (0-800 I can win, but anything above that, I get raped).

Can I get better playing against a computer or do I need to play live chess? Any tips on how to get better?

There are several things you could do to improve. For one, I'd suggest analyzing the games you play after you've played them, especially the ones you lose. Try to understand why you lost, and see if you could have done anything better. Learn basic opening principles, tactical and strategic motifs, endgames. Look at annotated games by strong players, either as videos or in text form. Above all, play much, preferably against opposition slightly above your own level. Improvement begins at the end of your comfort zone.
