Nadal, on clay, succeeds due to his defensive prowess and extreme topspin forehand. When a player catches him out of sorts in a rally, the ball sticking to the surface of the clay and bouncing high up gives Nadal time to get to it, making his opponent play that one extra shot. His forehand, already spinning up and away, is helped by the court's bounce, making it harder to hit back in an aggressive way, especially if you're a one-hander.
Federer is successful on grass due to his attacking style and steady slice backhand. When he gets the upper hand in a rally, he's able to strike the ball into places where once it hits the grass, it stays low and slides away deeper in the direction it was hit, making it super hard to get to. In other rallies, his slice stays low and buys him time, requiring tennis players (who are usually tall) to dig low and return the ball. This means Federer usually gets a neutral shot to feast on. The slice is a shot that is very effective and has helped him have such a good winning record against the taller men in the game.
This is not to say that these two shots are the only reason these players succeed. Federer moves very well on clay and has a killer forehand, and Nadal can attack well on grass too. It's just the simplest case to illustrate the difference between the two surfaces.

THE NEED TO SLIDE

Because of the fine covering on top of the surface it simply isn’t possible to move as effectively on a clay court using the same movement techniques that are used on a hard court.

Being able to slide across clay is the easy part, the tough part is being able to time the slide into the shot while maintaining balance to be able to swing freely through the shot and then to finish in a strong position to allow good recovery back into court. Sliding is an art and can only be mastered through spending a considerable amount of time on the surface.

A CONSTANTLY CHANGING SURFACE

A clay court will play fast with high bounce on a dry, sunny day and on an overcast, wet day the same court will play much slower with a lower bounce.

The bounce of a clay court is more variable than that of a hard court. With constant play (clay gathers at the end of a slide) and the effects of weather, it is near impossible for clay courts to maintain a consistent bounce throughout the whole playing area during a match. Even with daily maintenance and proper upkeep, the very best clay courts will produce the odd bad bounce.

It is worth noting the lines on a clay court are usually made of plastic and when the ball hits the line it shoots through very quickly – so be ready!

THE EFFECT OF SPIN

A ball hit with topspin reacts differently on a clay court compared to a hard court. The gritty surface of a clay court means a ball hit with spin will bite more into the court and will enhance the effect of the spin put on the ball. If topspin is put on the ball, the ball will bounce higher and sharper off the clay court than the same ball hit on a hard court.

Clay also plays slower than hard or grass courts, which makes it tougher to hit unreturnable winners. Due to the clay court’s high bounce and slower conditions the majority of clay court specialists go back further in the court to hit the ball, creating more time to set up for the shot and allowing them to take the ball under shoulder height, where they can generate maximum power.
