I actually find expansion and relocation to be really exciting, generally. But lately they have been screwing it the fuck up. Examples:

- Is Las Vegas really a city that deserves two franchises (NHL and NFL) all of a sudden? The air conditioning palaces they'll have to build in the middle of the desert will be sterile places to play games and will slowly destroy the environment.

- Fuck Los Angeles. The Chargers? The Rams? Those relocations were fucking retarded and ruined what was left of those brands. LA (and the rest of California, for that matter) has enough big teams.

Things I would like to see:
- Montréal get a team again (perhaps MLB?)

- MLB expansion in general (not in LA or any other meme city plz)

- Any team relocated or expanded to a place that isn't a fucking meme. There are plenty of metro areas in the US that have never had a team or haven't in a really long time, especially in the non-coastal states.

Why does new orleans have a basketball team but not a baseball team
>>
>>75375841
relocation is good when the league is first and foremost healthy , the franchise itself is not healthy and the replacement is fast growing and suitable to be a replacement

so by these terms Oakland to Vegas is a good relocation because one the franchise is not healthy(plays in a crumbling stadium , oakland is losing jobs and millionaires do not watch sports[santa clara] , they care about baseball more than basketball and football) and the fanbase is vegas is largely raider fans anyway so another LA 2.0

whereas chargers and LA was terrible by all fronts and won't survive past 10 years , I even have doubts about the rams but too soon to judge it yet.

Expansions are good when the league is healthy and future owners can spend the cash on their respective parks/stadium
>>
>>75376609
>Expansions are good when the league is healthy and future owners can spend the cash on their respective parks/stadium

yet the NHL is having huge problems with 4 or 5 teams that stadium issues and are still choosing to expand and not relocate

>>75384440
Portland is definitely not big enough in terms of the city. Charlotte has a larger population in the city and metro area (though a smaller urban area, but this could be due to differences in measurement of what is and isn't urban), and if Charlotte isn't considered a big enough location to expand to with the other large Carolina populations it influences, then Portland certainly isn't. A team in Charlotte could potentially reach out to around 14 million people in the Carolina's. A team in Portland could only reach potentially 4.1 million people, if you just go by the state of Oregon's population.

Reno is the good city in Nevada. Las Vegas is nothing a big, debauched hotel complex. I get that people live there year-round in the city proper, but they're living on the outskirts of a shithole.
>>

>the DR + Puerto Rico don't have cities even close to big enough.

is this a joke?

Santo Domingo (Dominican capital)
2.9 million person metro

San Juan (Puerto Rican capital)
2.35 million in metro

Both are bigger than Milwaukee or Cincinnati, and around the level of St. Louis, Pittsburgh, and Kansas City

not to mention you'd be targeting a national market in baseball-crazy countries
>>
>>75386312
Reno is the biggest little shithole on earth and everyone knows it. Las Vegas doesn't have outskirts you retard. It's literally one big city comprimised of 3 or 4 cities in the middle of nowhere. The only outskirts are ours stops to Cali or Utah

we all know that LA should have the Raiders, San Antonio the Rams and Vegas the Chargers. Because, yes, SA and the Alamo Dome deserves more than a WWE event every three years (even if the Spurs is the Patriots of NBA).

But the best move ever would be the end of the CFL and 8 canadian NFL teams instead. CFL is a joke and Canada deserves some good football. We would have 40 NFL teams, not too much for all the talents NA can produce.
>>
>>75387147
Only 1 market in Canada is big enough
>>
>>75376609
To work, the relocation of the Rams needs only one thing : success on the field. LA is full of elitists who can't engage themselves of being fans of a non-elite team. Send Jared Goff to the playoffs three years in a row and you know that all the metropolis will wear blue and gold stuff for ten years.

This is why the Clippers is not very popular there, even if they have a better record than the Lakers for several seasons. Even if the Lakers are on their worst period, they've won rings. And Kobe.

Here, in Paris, we have the same phenomenon, and our soccer team, PSG, which exists only since the '70 and even if it wasn't the best, was winning cups every two or three years, and had a lot of fans very quickly because of that. Another team tried but failed hard to get fans because of the lack of trophies.

The owner is the MLB. This us what people, including Americans themselves, don't understand about American sports. sadly it does not work like that here in LA

our most popular team is the dodgers

this is indisputable , serious sport fans in LA love and adore the dodgers. Lakers are the team for the transplant and they quickly buy tickets enough to block out actual fans.

Kings have serious fans

Raiders had serious fans because they were a popular team in california alongside the niners throughout the 80s and 90s. That is why they have held a better attendance record than the rams from day one until the final day.

If the rams want to LA market they need to be good , fun , memorable and part of the community

Dodgers and Kings hold special programs for city and inland kids while lakers have some promotions with burger joints and few schools

rams only had like 3 park visits or something and haven't done shit since

when the raiders were here they invented the entire "be part of the community" shit for the NFL in oakland and brought it to LA they were loved from day one

not even a raider fan but when your team members are seen around the streets socializing with the common person they'll gain respect

Sonics fan here

at this point, I doubt Seattle will get a new NBA or NHL franchise for at least another decade

We have a crazy investment banker that is willing to not only 100% privately fund a new arena in an arena zoned section of the city in Sodo, he's willing to help fund other construction projects for the city. Oh, and he's already fucking spent $200 million just for the property. He's willing to spend 1.5 billion total to get a team and build an arena. All because he loved the Sonics as a kid. He also has the Nordstrom's, Wally Walker, and Russell Wilson on board too.

But the city council and mayor don't want that, they want to remodel Key Arena because the city owns it and can profit of it. Key Arena is the reason the Sonics moved. not the fans, not the ticket sales. it was the arena. it's in a shit location with no parking and no quick access to a freeway. It's also the smallest arena in the league and no remodel will make it NBA or NHL ready. The two proposal bids to remodel the Key don't even mention the Sonics, and the remodel wouldn't begin until fucking 2019.

The city is so fucking committed to the key arena, even though no one wants it, not the NBA, NHL, or the fans, they gave $50,000 to a PR firm to advertise for Key Arena.

frankly, the way the city has acted, we don't deserve a team. The City Council voided the team's 30 year lease for $30 million directly from Clay Bennett's pocket back in 2008, they voted down the original street vacation for the Sodo arena, why the fuck would they want to actually do good for the people when they can just build giant tunnels and let Amazon take over the city?

fuck Ed Murray, fuck the Council, fuck Howard Schultz.

You are welcome

I want a meme NHL Franchise
>>
>>75401064
does any kids play hockey there
anywhere high altitude enough to get snow and ice?

I like NHL too so more teams always better
>>
>>75401084
Weirdly, kids play hockey. There isn't a place were we get enough snow so it's only on artificial places. In Mexico City there must be like 10 or 12 Ice Skate floors and like 6 of them at least have a Hockey team.
I know there is a small league and I think some years ago the youth NT went to a World Cup or something. But as you can't figure, isn't a big thing. It's on the tier of Table Tennis and Cricket
>>
>>75375841
The NBA shouldn't expand just yet, there isn't enough talent and the parity is shit. The league is in the process of moving towards high volume 3-point shooting but there isn't enough shooting talent to go around just yet. Wait for a few more years so we can get some more solid meme-ballers and then we can have 32 teams.
>>
>>75401134
haha.

even ping pong is bigger than cricket in Estados Unidos. There's a lot of ignorant people who don't even know there is another sport played with a bat besides baseball. I wish people would know more about what's going down in other places besides murica
>>
>>75401209
Well, it seems now that I google it a little, that is a bigger thing than I thought. There is a semi-pro league and the Mexico NT is the only Latinamerica team that always compete in the World Cup (In a lower tier thought). But it seems shit is getting bigger.
>>
>>75401268
yeah, I'm sure there is a niche group of people in every country into any random sport even if it isn't widely popular in that country. but for a big league in that sport to expand there, there has to be enough of a fan base so the league and the franchises can get that money

sadly everything comes down to money
>>
>>75401309
that's why LA is getting two NFL teams. money. my buddy at work moved here (Minnesota) from San Diego and has been a Chargers fan all his life. he's pretty pissed off about them moving to LA.

I know it's about money in the end, but part of making money is being loyal to the fans that have been loyal to you by giving you their money
>>
Montreal here, fuck the expos and boreball, I hope we get the Nordiques back
>>
>>75401476
Nordiques would be awesome
they should have never went away

I'd like to see more Canadian teams in general, I'm not too proud to admit that you guys are the masters. I just like watching good hockey.
>>
>>75375841
Bring back Montreal Elbows
>>
>>75401511
>more Canadian teams
In what, an American National League? Fat chance
>>
>>75375841
>>Rams to LA
You mean Rams to St. Louis? LA was them returning back home.
>>
>>75401536
well if you got more NHL teams then it would be your league and we are guests

there's way too many American teams.fuck do hot places like Texas and Florida have hockey teams when the Stanley Cup is a Canadian trophy and the entire game was invented in Canada?
>>
>expansion
>relocation
what about realignment

I always love when serious college conference realignment talks pop up again, gets me excited for shit about to go down. I try to research ahead of time so that I can see them coming.
>>
>>75401567
hell most of the players on "American" NHL teams are Canadians, Scandinavians, Russians, etc.

NHL expansion to Europe when?
all cold places should be in the league

So what's going to happen to the A's and Rays?

they both have shit attendance and have the two worst stadiums in the MLB and it isn't even close.

The Rays seem like a natural fit for Montreal. It would give Toronto a worthy rival and it would give the AL East an easier flight schedule.

But then, what happens to the A's? besides the untested market of Vegas, there are no real other alternatives in the West. Portland would be cool, but is too small. Other California cities like San Jose have already rejected the team, and Oakland clearly won't get their shit together considering that the Raiders and Warriors are already one foot out the door.
>>
>>75401646
>hell most of the players on "American" NHL teams are Canadians, Scandinavians, Russians, etc.

Except
More Americans play hockey than any other European country.

>all cold places should be in the league

This would be financial suicide, not to mention the Stanley Cup playoffs are played in the SPRING.
>>
>>75401765
Hongcouver because why not
>>
>>75401944
the idea of having 3 leaf teams makes me want to vomit, but it realistically is a good choice. Considering 10-15k Canadians cross the border to see the Blue Jays play the Mariners every year. there may be a market there.
>>
Not sure why MLB hasn't expanded to 32 teams yet
>>
>>75400656
All the relevant provinces have teams already.
>>
>>75402086
probably because it would cause a massive division realignment and would alter the current playoff structure.

they couldn't do two 6 team divisions, nor would they get rid of divisions and just have the two leagues. They would go NFL style and split the central into north and south divisions.

I think they want to hold off on realignment and expansion until all stadium situations get solved. so once the DBacks, Rangers, A's, and Rays get situated, then expansion will most likely happen
>>
>>75401869
that's because there are more Americans. of course more are gonna play hockey. 1 US state is the size of an entire European country. but if you don't know winter you don't know hockey. hot places can start a roller hockey league. leave the ice to the professionals.

>you merely adopted the ice, I was born in it, molded by it

they were lowest in attendance for years you liar
>>
>>75402322
I don't. NB doesn't have a city that can support an NHL franchise. Halifax is a more likely location.

>>
>>75375841
Can someone explain the idea of moving teams to another city? It seems really bizarre for me but I realize that's probably because it's an American thing. Is it because people don't have a team near them so they move to an open market? Is it common to support a team not from your city/area?
>>
>>75402233
t. Butthurt flatlander

Enjoy your meth... I'm sure you will
>>
>>75402396
The Halifax Scotsmen or some shit
>>
>>75402650
Americans move and the teams follow.
>>
IMO I think each league works well with 32 teams. MLB and NFL with 2 Leagues each with 4 divisions with 4 teams. While the NHL and NBA have 2 conferences with 2 divisions of 8 teams.

MLB
Vancouver expansion
Portland expansion
Tampa gets relocated to Montreal
Colorado gets relocated to Charlotte

NHL
Florida gets relocated to Kansas City
Arizona gets relocated to Quebec City
Seattle expansion
>>
>>75402650
sports franchises are big business and the owners and shareholders have no loyalty to the fans whatsoever, all they care about is money.

and if they think they can make more money somewhere else, fuck the fans, we're moving
>>
>>75402364
they were not the lowest, that's fake news my friend.

They still had low attendance in the 2000's, but that was mainly do to the shitty product. in 2007 and 2008, things flatlined because people knew the team was going to relocate, but they still never hit 30th.

During the Sonics last season.
>>
>>75403255
*During the Sonics last season, the Grizzlies and Pacers had lower attendance despite having bigger arenas.
>>
>>75401511
You realize Canadian teams arw under much more pressure and usually suffer from bad management as a result.

American NHL teams are much better for that very reason. Americans are patient enough to let their teams build up properly because they have other sports to care about in the mean time.
>>
>>75402874
>trying to take Rockies away
>they are top 10 attendance even when they are terrible.
>wanting to put them in a shit Market like Carolina.
You are a memeing faggot. Rockies are not in need of a relocation.

If anyone is its the Marlins.
>>
>>75403307
pressure is no excuse for bad management
>>
>>75375841
the next logical step for mlb is expand in Canada or make a Mexican team.
