Deep dish is legitimately excellent. Its a unique take on pizza and despite NYCfags who have never had it shitting on it, its good. They for some reason don't do this to Italian pizza, which is also good, but in my opinion inferior to most American styles.

Chicago dogs are really only ever good at Portillos. I wrote them off on my first visit to the city a few years ago after visiting a few guide recommended places, but was dragged to Portillos after moving here and actually thought it was fine. Its still a hot dog so it wasn't good but it wasn't bad either.

Italian beefs are always bad, and are like a shitty precursor to a real cheesesteak. A soggy sandwich that falls part sucks. But the beef is over cooked and that sauce simply isn't good. The best sandwiches in the world are located between DC and Boston with the majority being in NYC, Philly, and Jersey. There are millions of recipes on the internet for bread and how to make sandwiches, but the nearly all people with the actual knowledge to make the bread and meat taste good live there.

Have you ever had a cheesesteak in Philly or atleast a couple hours within the the city (including NYC).

It just isn't as good. Even the worst cheesesteaks in the city that cost more than 5.00 dollars (Pats and Geno's) simply taste better. I've eaten at all the popular chains and tried it at a few smaller places.

I personally just think that Chicago is a victim of its location. Its the 3rd largest city so people from all over come here. But its surrounded by places like Ohio and Iowa so there isn't any competition. The city gets food trends, but usually not in any real numbers. So sure you'll be able to find KFC, but theres only a few places doing Korean Fried Chicken and typically they operate in different places so aren't even competing with each other. Theres tons of places, especially in the Loop that should have gone out of business a decade ago. The actual good places are so extremely hyped up because there isn't anywhere else that can compete. Au Cheval was a massive disappointment the first time I went simply because of how Chicagoans talk about it, but on subsequent visits it was good simply because I knew what to expect.

Im just disappointed. Its a major city in the US but really is just an extremely mid-tier city when you actually compare it on a global level.
