In 04 Terry and Rio were too young and not world class. Same with Ashley Cole.

In 97 Beckham, Neville, Scholes, Butt etc. were JUST emerging and not at the highest level yet, it took another 2-3 years for that.

In 1999 England had maybe 3 top class players at the peak of their powers - Shearer, Sol Campbell and Beckham. Arguably Seaman. Owen was in massive decline and scored 1 goal that entire year.

England's best ever team was in 2006 and even that was plagued with problems and lack of balance

Any one of those 4 would be a stand out defender and captain at any club on the planet. And they were.

And somehow they all played for England at the same time in their peaks.
