Actually since Lewandowski joined everything has been falling apart for Bayern in the CL.

Mandzukic was clearly superior, he's proving it at Juve right now.

We can pretty safely establish that Müller needs to get the ball while facing the goal. That automatically makes him unusable as a classic No. 9.

He also needs to be in constant movement, especially off the ball. His primary asset is his ability to think just a bit faster than your typical defender. He creates space, but at the same time he depends on it, because his technical skills are pretty poor.

Ultimately, I think it's about finding that Müller-shaped hole in the enemy's formation, or creating it outright. I'm sure that Ancelotti didn't want to play Müller up front, he's too experienced to actually expect this plan to work. The problem is that there is literally zero depth at striker in this Buyern team. Anyone with at least a bit of hold-up play would be better than Müller.
