Except their treble season showed Messi created most of the goals Suarez & Neymar scored. His solo dribble goals were on point, his assists were crucial. 27 Assists 58 goals? He was exemplary in every role he filled, playmaking, wingplay/dribbling, goal scoring, free kicks, possession. That season he put world class players in multiple positions to shame.

Problem isn't Messi's role atm, it's the teams tactics, formation, signing etc.

Real is killing it because they just give Ronaldo a role as you said he can easily fill, finishing. The matches are won mostly because of the team defending properly, snuffing out the oppositions key players through tactics, moving the ball around & creating chances for the forward to take advantage of, everyone does their role well which on aggregate gets them wins.

Real's midfield today:

Argentina is incapable of having an organised midfield, they're just a bunch of good players that don't know how to play together and especially they don't know how to use Messi. In fact, Barcelona bases its system much more around Messi that Argentina and that's why they get all the sucess. Messi starts the play in Barcelona, then passes the ball, gets it back and finishes it. In Argentina he never gets the ball back because Agüero, Higuaín and cia always try to finish the play on their own, normally failing.

Also, if you talk about three finals Messi lost you have to consider the moment and the opponent. First, 2013-2014 was easily the worst season Messi has had. Even some Barça supporters criticised him because he was "dosing himself" and only thinking about the WC. But then it was obvious that he was not in his best moment, even though he was the best player in the first four matches. Then, in Copa América they lost twice on penalties after a boring 0-0 match. And that's not a coincidence, Chile is a very physical team that proposed a tough match, continously stopping the game with foults and not leaving any space in the pitch. In that situation it is impossible to score if no one fucks it up, or at least you need a top midfield which is capable of thinking and passing the ball incredibly fast, just as Barcelona does. An despite all that, Argentina had some chances (>Higuaín) and could have perfectly won in penalties. Netherlands match was very similar to this, both teams were so afraid of making a big mistake that they played like shit, without any clear chance and offering one of the most boring semifinals in the history of the WC.
