At the end of the day, this is better for the sport of hockey.

The next two olympics are in Korea and China. Countries that have no hockey infrastructure whatsoever. Both teams will get automatic births into the tournament. Better they play amateurs and not get blown out so badly, so as not to turn people in those countries off the sport.

Meanwhile Bettman can hold the world cup, the IIHF still it's world championships. Perhaps those two entities can work closer together in the future on a tournament that wouldn't run concurrently with the NHL playoffs, so all the best players can join

It's also best for the players. The pros don't have to disrupt their professional career, the amateurs get a chance to play for their country. Either way the hockey will be good.
