Ten doesn't require you to back into your half as much and it certainly doesn't require you to sprint back with a fullback. At the very least, you are much further forward than if you are a winger.

A lot of the success he's had as a winger recently has been with Rakitic covering for him. I'm not sure that would work so well with a team that doesn't have so much of the ball. Also, at times, Messi at ten (where he goes for Barca when Rakitic covers his man) leaves the team slightly overrun in midfield. You need another body in there.

These are the reasons Barca switched to a 3-3-1-3, by the way. It wasn't working so well with Messi on the wing.

It works pretty can work pretty well for Barca because they control possession but for Argentina they set themselves up as the underdogs and are more defensive/battle more.
