When we think of God as the creator, we are thinking of him, most of the time, as a supernal artisan. Whatever doctrine we may be considering, whether it be a doctrine like that of Descartes, or of Leibniz himself, we always imply that the will follows, more or less, from the understanding or at least accompanies it, so that when God creates he knows precisely what he is creating. Thus, the conception of man in the mind of God is comparable to that of the paper-knife in the mind of the artisan: God makes man according to a procedure and a conception, exactly as the artisan manufactures a paper-knife, following a definition and a formula. Thus each individual man is the realization of a certain conception which dwells in the divine understanding.

In 1933 Ellis Achong bowled a ripper of a delivery. A left-arm off-spinner, Achong bowled a variation out of the back of the hand that turned in to the right-hander, bamboozling Englishman Walter Robins who was stumped. The disappointed Robins exclaimed loudly, making reference to Achong’s status as the first test player of Chinese descent: “Fancy being done by a bloody Chinaman!” Achong’s own recollection1 states that the remark was directed at West Indian all-rounder and noted anti-rascism campaigner Learie Constantine. Others elaborate that Constantine asked in response “Do you mean the bowler or the ball?” his tone presumably aggrieved. Whatever the precise truth of the incident, and despite the fact that Achong was not even the first recorded practitioner of the ball, the name stuck and since then it has been known as the chinaman. 2

It’s worth noting that Achong himself didn’t have a problem with this outcome. The National Sporting Archives of Trinidad and Tobago reports: “It is said that Achong invented the “Chinaman,” the slow left-arm ball coming out the back of the hand. And no one finds the joke more delightful than Achong himself, a cheerful man and the first and only person of Chinese ancestry to play Test cricket for the West Indies”.3 He lived to the age 82 and till his death in 1986 made no comment against the usage in interviews about the event.

However societies change, language changes, and in other contexts the term “Chinaman” became increasingly unacceptable. In cricket, however, the term has only ever been used as descriptive of the bowling style – there is no record of a controversy where it has been thrown around as a pejorative. But in 2017, the question has been raised: does the term carry over its connotations over from wider society?

Sports writer Andrew Wu called for the term to be dropped entirely on hearing it repeatedly as Kuldeep Yadav bowled in the 4th test.
>>
What a SHOT! Sir JEE!
>>
Wu was alarmed at “how often and insensitively the term was being used after Kuldeep’s efforts” and relates how he took to twitter to gain insightful and nuanced perspectives from well-respected experts on the issue. Internet self-martyrdom aside, the crux of Wu’s argument against “chinaman” is that the term was borne out of Robins’ original racist insult and is therefore irredeemable, and that the term itself is “insensitive” across all contexts.
The first argument is actually a rather shallow reading of the original incident. The remark was obviously racist, but was the acceptance of the term? Wu writes: “Its origin in cricket came not out of respect but disbelief that an Englishman could lose his wicket to a Chinese”. Certainly that was Robins’ perspective, but in memorialising his hubris has the term not served to highlight that race was no boundary to wicket-taking ability? The retort from Constantine is particularly important, because it shows that this didn’t take place in a British old-boys atmosphere where racial considerations were ignored and everyone had a chuckle about the genetic inferiority of the yellow man. Indeed the imposition of a white captain by the WICB on the mostly black West Indian team that included players of George Headley’s stature was a source of tension from the 20s till the accession of Frank Worrell. These were issues that were present in the players’ minds. Further, that Achong apparently considered it a joke may well point to the reply of “The bowler or the ball” being the key ingredient in the naming, not the barb itself.

But there is no one authoritative source for the incident, there is confusion over what happened, so we could just disregard the history and look at the word as it is used. Within the game there is no history of derogatory usage, but outside there is. Three similar examples to consider are debates over “bitch”, “cunt”, and blackface.

>>
Within this article and many similar, we get arguments such as “Throwing around the word cunt as if it has no meaning anymore—or some “new” meaning separate from gender—is ignorant and lazy, and contributes, in spite of all protestations to the contrary, to a culture of inequality.” The implication is that you’re a bad person if you ever use the word cunt, that words never or only very slowly lose their meanings in the hands of oppressive groups, only oppressed groups can reshape the meaning for themselves. If you decide that there is such a massive difference between calling someone a “cunt” or a “dickhead” due to the underlying gender of the genitalia, then perhaps words are forever tied to all of their connotations. But if you don’t, then there is hope for “chinaman” as a bowling style. Similarly is blackface always wrong? If so then was Black Like Me a wrong thing to publish? Most advocates of racial equality would say it advanced the cause. Should John Safran be exiled from polite society for this? Again, meanings vary across context, and the strict absolutists about language are found out. If even these extreme examples present different meanings across different contexts then chinaman can exist separately as a delivery and in a separate context as a taboo slur.

Playing in India is pretty swell.

>Produce pitches that offer things to the bowlers
>Wickets constantly falling if the batsmen don't apply themselves
>Tests finish in 3-4 days if one side are shitters.

Meanwhile in Australia:
>Pitches are complete roads
>Full 5 days of batsmen smashing the bowlers around

I'm proud of our boys, if someone offered me a 1-2 loss before this series I would take it in a heartbeat. It does hurt to come so close to winning the series and then tripping at the final hurdle though.
>>
>>74921699
Why have you got your vas def tangled over Smith? He was our best batsman for the series.
>>
Did you ever hear the tragedy of Steven Peter Deveraux Smith The Wise? I thought not. It’s not a story the Indians would tell you. It’s an Australian legend. Steven Peter Deveraux Smith was a captain of the Australian Cricket team, so powerful and so wise he could use his cricket ability to carry the Australian team… He had such a knowledge of the bat that he could even keep the ones he cared about from losing. The back and across is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught the world everything he knew, then India killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from losing, but not himself.

For the Aussies, this was the best series since the '05 Ashes (except for maybe that 2 test series in South Africa when Cummins debuted, but it wasn't long enough). Smith is super human, the Marsh brothers are sub human, Maxi keeps his spot, great to see Cummins firing and as good as SOK was he is still #2 to the GOAT.

At 26, I'm a virgin, and I haven't even been close to losing it. Kissless, never held hands, etc... This is not a situation I like, and I want to do something about it. As in, I want to visit a prostitute.

I'm well aware that suddenly getting laid will not solve all my problems, either with relationships or otherwise, but I feel like it'd be something, at least. To be honest, I'm not entirely sure how things got this way. I do not look great, and I'm not very socially skilled (I have, in fact, been diagnosed with autism), but I don't think I'm a horrible person either. Perhaps finally losing it will help me loosen up or something. I just feel like I need to try something.

Anyway, I would like to know if anybody else has been in a similar situation and ended up actually visiting a prostitute, and how this ended up. Right no I'm still doubting if I want to do this or not, but I'm leaning towards doing it (or I wouldn't have posted).

India skipper Virat Kohli says he is no longer friends with Australian players and never will be following a heated four-Test series.

Kohli declared before the start of the series that he is "really good friends" with some of the Australians.

The injured captain declared that "has changed for sure" after India completed a 2-1 series win on Tuesday, ending six weeks stacked with spats and controversy.

"I thought that was the case, but it has changed for sure," Kohli said.

"I've been proven wrong."
The series appeared headed for a nasty finish after a claimed catch by Murali Vijay was overruled on review because the ball was judged to have hit the ground.

Australia captain Steve Smith was shown on television footage appearing to mouth the words "f***ing cheat" after the not out verdict was revealed.

This followed a series of incidents on and off the field during the series.

Born in a middle class Rajput family to a watchman, Ravindra Jadeja did not enjoy many privileges in his childhood. His mother had passed away when he was just 17, and his sister took it upon her shoulders to support the family in whatever way she could, eventually getting her mother’s job as a nurse. Even today, Jadeja is very close with his sister, and she is someone with whom he shares everything.
Ravindra Anirudh Jadeja, the star all-rounder of the Indian cricket team, was born on 6th December, 1988, in Navagam Ghed, Gujarat. The family used to live in a one-room flat that was allotted to Jadeja's mother Lata, who was a nurse at a Government Hospital. It was a huge thing for his mother back in those days, because of the taboos revolving around women going to work in the Jadeja family. His father, Anirudh Jadeja, was into plenty of odd jobs that pulled in a little more money for the family.
Though Jadeja never quit going to school, he was already too much into the sport before the age of 10. He was often bullied by older boys, who never gave him a chance to bat. He used to cry every night before going to sleep. Mahendrasinh Chauhan, a policeman by profession who was also a small-time cricketer, used to coach young cricketers at a place called Cricket Bungalow. He had a technique of teaching flight for spin bowlers by making a boy stand in the middle of the pitch and ask the bowler to bowl over his head. Chauhan changed Jadeja's cricketing life completely, for he was extremely strict with discipline.
Jadeja was given the option of either getting selected at the Cricket Bungalow or being sent away to an army school.

There was even an instance when Jadeja turned out to be an expensive bowler in a match, and he ended up taking five wickets by the end of the game, only after Chauhan slapped him in the middle of the pitch, in front of everyone.

Smith was the rock that all your efforts were built on in that series, do you really expect me to believe that there is no better talent than the likes of Marsh and Handscomb at your disposal?

It's a good result for Australia when you consider the state of some of the pitches, but that still doesn't mean that there is no room for improvement.

Look at SA for example, without De Cock, we would have been fucked this tour, himself, and to a slightly lesser degree Du Plessis and Bavuma, has been our most consistent performer with the bat

There are very few Australians averaging over 40 in FC cricket and Handscomb is one of them (and he's not that old either). He will become a good Test player, he just kept throwing away starts in this series which is something that he also did initially at Shield level before putting everything together.

Marsh won't play in the baggy green again.

Wade was surprisingly decent this series. You'd have to assume he'll be playing in the Ashes.
>>
>>74942164
he had what, two decent games? Nevill was the same, but he got dropped for being too inconsistent.

He'll probably play, but I don't really see much of a case for keeping either with their age. I'd much rather see someone younger come in

I was meaning behind the stumps. I agree he still needs to up his batting output even though I think he had the second best average of Australians who played all four matches.

I don't think Nevill was dropped for inconsistency as much as he just had a really poor few Tests in a row except for that one 60(?) he made against SA.
>>
>>74942190
from memory before the second innings it went smith, renshaw and warner in that order, but I could be wrong

yeah he was passable behind the stumps, but he still made a few major fuckups albeit not as many as we normally see. I don't see any changes in his technique behind the stumps though, so I don't know if that's going to continue. He still barely moves before the batsman plays their shot and then relies entirely on his hand eye coordination to take the ball on a dive, when a better keeper like nevill would have turned it into a fairly pedestrian take by that point.

he'll probably stick though because smith unironically didn't like how nevill wasn't sledging 24/7

I'm not even going to entertain the notion that you know a thing about cricket beyond what happens within the confines of your own national team.

Because if that is all you think is the quality at the Proteas disposal, then you are just dumb.

>>74942139
If he is this young talent that is prophesied to be so good, why was he not protected from this series? He wasn't particularly good against >us, in fact, I recall Rabada giving him a first ball yorker that shattered his stumps. So why would you throw him into an arena that is going to shatter his confidence?
He's not like Renshaw, Renshaw succeeded because he fights for his wicket, which is how you have to play in those conditions.
>>
>>74942633
Handscomb made 55 against South Africa you dumb fuck
>why was he not protected from this series

Yes you're right, I was thinking of Maddison for that example, my bad.

>>74942653
Those pitches that they prepared, irrespective of how well you play spin, there's really not much you can do. I mean look at how many times India opened the bowling with Ashwin or Jadeja. The wickets were a batsmen's nightmare and a spinner's wet dream. Day one pitches were like day four pitches in Sri Lanka.

I don't think anyone billed Keaton Jennings as a guy who was going to score a century in India but sometimes it is just worth picking a guy in form.

Warner is at the point where he is a guaranteed failure. Gambling on someone like Kurtis Patterson literally could not go any worse (with S Marsh opening, obviously).

Steve Smith is not “temperamentally sound enough” to lead Australia, says former spinner Kerry O’Keeffe, who feels the skipper over-reacted too often during the lost Test series against India.
Australia lost the series 2-1 and Smith apologised for letting his “emotions falter” several times during the four-match rubber, which was marred by acrimony between the two sides.
O’Keeffe feels Smith led with sincerity but he is too emotional for the high-pressure job.
“He leads from the front (and) he’s finding out about leadership,” O’Keeffe said on ‘Fox Sports’ Back Page Live’.
“Is he temperamentally sound enough to be the captain of our country? Probably not because he’s so emotional. We’ve seen when he’s on the field he’s overly reacting to everything,” added the leg-spinner, who played 24 Tests for Australia and picked 53 wickets.
O’Keeffe cited Smith’s outburst and use of cuss words after Murali Vijay claimed a grassed catch of Glenn Maxwell to justify his stance.
“That catch was (not) cleanly taken. He decided to go with the cheat line. There’s an emotion to Steve Smith that basically is at the core of his game,” O’Keeffe said.
Smith, however, had a fantastic series with the bat, making 499 runs.
