Your players aren't that good, and outside of tournaments your team isn't very good. I'd go so far as to say at least half of the 3rd seeded teams in Europe would qualify if they were in CONCACAF.

However, and this is the key point, the US seem to go up a few gears in tournaments and that isn't just some cliche. There are plenty of teams that fall apart completely when it comes to major tournaments, England being the primary example, but other examples are Russia, Croatia and occasionally France. While getting to the round of 16 on a consistent basis isn't to be sniffed at, you're just not contenders.

I'll put it this way: If you ever win the World Cup, none of the squad involved in that triumph have even made their under-age debut yet. You could conceivably go on a meme run to the semi-final in 2022 though if the draw goes favourably for you.
