IIRC Ricky had worse luck that year, though I can't remember particular examples and have too many assignments due to bother looking into it (shouldn't be on /f1/ at all really).

Also, he's pulled off some nice moves and looks like he's got good raw pace, but I don't even personally rate Ricky as a GOAT. He's very good, but I reckon his stock got put mad-high because he came in and immediately started killing 'he's a GOAT guys, honest' Vettel. Jev and Sainz are underrated, would love to see what they'd do in good cars.

>have restriction on fuel to be used in the race
>have restriction on fuel flow even though you can only use so much fuel in the race
It's retarded, and he was over by a very slight margin.
>>
>>74906973

I actually think it was a deliberate calculated move by Red Bull.

>Renault power unit had terrible fuel economy, thus made no power due to the fuel limit
>technical regulations said they could use 100L/hr
>technical regulations didn't say how or who would measure that
>Red Bull deliberate used more than 100L/hr according to the FIA meter
>but used less than 100L/hr according to their own measurements
>got DQ'd
>challenged it in FIA court
>FIA court sided with the FIA
>noshit.jpg

If they won, they could have effectively used as much fuel as they wanted all year, which would have made the Renault a lot more competitive.
Since Seb was the clear number 1 (reigning world champion) at the start of the season, they pulled the stunt on Ricciardo's car.
>>
>>74907066
I like this theory but it is Merc sabotaging Lewis to make Nico the WDC tier so I also have to call it absolutely bullshit
>>
>>74907066
Yeah absolutely
>>
>>74906433
You just know...
>>
>>74907099
>Merc sabotaging Lewis to make Nico the WDC

How the fuck is that even similar?

If you followed the drama at the time it was pretty obvious what they were up to.

Horner was even interviewed during the race after they got warnings from the FIA about fuel use, saying that according to their own measurements they were under 100L/hr, so they weren't going to use less fuel.
>>
>>74907099
Merc had nothing really to gain from sabotaging Hamilton though. If anything it would make their lives harder by bringing in undue stress and media attention from Lewis' inevitable and extended bitching, and high media profile.

Whereas RB were using an at the time unknown number 2 driver to test the limits of the regs, which could have potentially given them an advantage for the entire year. I can't stand conspiracy theories either, but I don't even know if you can call it that.
>>
>>74907150

Horner also made a big deal about the fuel flow meters giving different results from one meter to the next, all in an effort to cast doubt on them, and let the teams measure their own fuel use.

They gain their German champ for their German brand
RBR made their number 2 look like a cheat which isn't good.

Either way they are both bullshit that it was intentional. Lewlew got a bad engine and it happened to fail, RBR thought Riccy's car was legit but differences in measuring caused it to be illegal. No grand conspiracy for either
>>
>>74907183

>>
>>74907208
I reckon RB will out develop Ferrari further into the season, particularly aero wise.

>>74907207
>team bosses both say they didn't do anything dodgy
Well, they would.

I'm sorry but I think you're being a bit naive. Thinking Merc sabotaged Lewlew is a bit silly more because it would require involve the thousands of staff there working together and tampering with his engines. But RB did their cheating out in the open, because they had huge potential gains, while risking the points in one race, of one No.2 driver. It was a bit outrageous and I felt bad for Ricky, but you can see the logic and fair play to them really.
>>
Considering we're talking conspiracy theories, here's mine.

>1988
>Mclaren dominant
>The one, single race that both Mclarens happen to finish is Monza

Need the inside of the wheels to be aligned not the outside it kind of kills the thicc aesthetic
High quality image attatched

Maybe centers aligned would look good but you just need the delicious thiccness hanging out imo

t wings need to die
>>
>>74910297
I love that they are all quite different. Ferrari & Mercedes are real close in performance yet they have cars with completely different design philosophies. If every car had a plain white livery you could still distinguish them from just the TV angles.
>>
>>74910297
I disagree, I like them very much.
I'm also surprised how fast it has gotten weird to see images from cars from previous years. They seem so strange already.

T-wing needs to go though. I'm all for aero appendages, but that's just garbage.
>>
>>74910358
Also the front wheels should be smaller diameter while the rears should add a few extra inches onto the profile of the tyres.

Just go full 70's
>>
>>74910414
That wasn't particulary aesthetic though.
>>
>>74910410
>T-wing needs to go though.

Kinda yes but I have to admit that Ferrari's (and Haas's by reflection) looks way better than Mercedes's both single and double t-wing
>>
>>74910432
It's funny that because I was thinking that the Merc t-wing looks way more substantial than the flimsy Ferrari one. Their's is so thin that it looks like it shouldn't even be doing anything.
>>
>>74910429
Really?

Maybe not the most extreme ones but personally the current difference in diameter between the front and rear isn't big enough.

Either the fronts need to shrink or the rears need to grow.

>>

The wings are like 2008 aero trinkets but the shark fins ruin the lines of the cars and take up a significant amount of space

So your post was made in awareness that the statement was wrong?

>>
>>74906483
He's not spending a lot of his time designing the RB car (designing road cars and ships, etc) and we're now at the point where no single designer, no matter the talent, is better than a well-coordinated team backed by latest technology.

In that sense, look out for Williams in the years to come, Paddy Lowe is good at team-building.
>>
>>74911119
The main issue is that RBR, while they do have quality engineers and designers other than Newey, none of them are really capable of taking his mantle. Also as is said, Newey recently has turned his interest to more practical applications of his expertise, his workload on the 2017 car, whilst better than 2016, is not the same as in the good old days.
>>
>>74911119
>>74911127
Isn't in season development a thing that Newey does? Pretty sure he did that in McLaren and has done it in RBR before. Likely they'll get good by the end of the year then come back next year in a stronger position.
>>
>>74911142
Like any professional, his working pride will get him to do his typical in season development, with the expected engine upgrade at Spain and the car already having decent race pace, expect RBR to be much closer mid season.

End of season they'll be there abouts, engines are still very important.

The Mercedes PU up the main straight pretty much gave Ham pole position, Vettel and him were nearly in the exact same time around the final corner. That extra power gave Ham pole over Vet, or atleast by a larger margin.

Renault PU still can't stand up to the Merc or Ferrari PU. Also it's pretty clear RedBull think there car would be quicker if fins weren't allowed.

Ferrari would crumble with an internal Lewis/Nico type fight.

Where's Alonso going to go when he leaves McLaren?

I don't think the answer is obvious at all.

Would Mercedes really want him alongside Hamilton? That's an explosive (and very expensive) pairing. Merc is probably the most likely, in my mind, but still not a sure deal by any means.

Or perhaps he will think about Ferrari again? But Seb and Alonso would also be an explosive (and again expensive) pairing. And it's very possible neither of them is really enthused about welcoming the other back.

Who else is there? Red Bull - never. They're committed to the two guys they have now. And any other team will have Alonso stamping his feet that it's not good enough.

So yes I think Merc looks the most likely, but not a sure fire thing by any means. They had a handful with Lewis and Nico - they'll have it even worse with Lewis and Alonso. Who of course had a very acrimonious season in 2007.

Maybe he can persuade Briatore to take over Renault again and relive the good old days?

Le Mans I reckon. He's finished imo. While he's still perhaps one of the best drivers, he's also old and clearly doesn't care. Add to that the fact he's difficult and he's likely to get pushed out, if he doesn't jump anyway.

Renault is the only option and I would say it's very unlikely. Or if a new works team comes in like Alfa.

Hm maybe you're right. Would be a massive shame, but yeah, it doesn't really seem like there's an obvious spot for him at any team right now.

He should never have left Ferrari. He would have won races in his very next season (in 2015, when Seb won races) if he had stuck with them.

That's Alonso's overriding problem - making terrible career choices. Leaving McLaren and rejoining Renault was a terrible move. So was leaving Ferrari and rejoining McLaren.

Alonso went back to Renault in 2008 because of "muh 2005/2006" - it didn't work out well.
Alonso went back to McLaren in 2015 because of "muh 2007" - it didn't work out well.

Basically, he doesn't have a good history of going back to teams.

But maybe it will happen, because yes it would be a team that's definitely willing to hire him and can easily make a space for him (unlike Merc and Ferrari). So yeah. Could happen I guess.

>>74912564
Ah right. Well I guess since they are a works team, you would think that they should overtake Red Bull at some point - even without Newey, a works team should be able to outperform their customers, else they're doing something wrong.

This year's tyres give you no warning when they're about to lose traction, so if you carry more speed through the corner than your downforce allows, you'll have barely any chance to save the car

Fia was pressured to scrutinize how/if oil was being used to gain boost/speed.
this was not done in the previous season.

enter 2017, no more puffs of smoke, no more hammertime, a normal well designed car.

people say Ferrari made steps forward but its Mercedes whom made a step backwards.

I'm afraid no solid confirmations but the best confirmations apparently came from former Mercedes team members now working for other teams.

yeah, when I heard this yesterday I was so gutted. it sucks enough if a team, any team, dominates but if its done with such faggotry....

we all know teams have cheated before yadayada but goddamnit what have we been looking at the past 3 years?

what's the fucking point?

oh by the way oilgate is still under investigation by the FIA.
>>
>>74914145
nah they've been the same for decades. if they find out stuff that is iffy, they most likely wont report it.

Even if it turns out the allegations are true, it's not like anyone is going to be stripped of their titles. They will sweep it under the rug, maybe fine Mercedes.

But if I'm wrong, it would be weird suddenly having Tricky Ricky as a 2-time WDC.

welcome to F1
cheating and getting away with it is the ultimate goal
>>
>Oilgate

I like the name. Mercedes get fucked.
>>
>>74914207
>They will sweep it under the rug

Mercedes aren't using it this year (no "up to 11" in qualy, no "hammertime" setting), so I wonder if the FIA told them to cut it out or they would Daryl them.

Considering Mercedes corporate PR has all been about how efficient their F1 tech is, for them to be exposed as liars who were actually cheating by burning dirty oil to gain an advantage would be catastrophic.
>>
>>74914224
from what I understand it was already illegal under existing rules but RBR pressured FIA to investigate prior season(s) as well as be more pro-active in this season.

How come people on a Mongolian Wall Climbing forum openly talk about this and at the same time Ferrari isn't blowing this shit out of proportions to smear shit all over Mercedes?
>>
>>74914493
Because Ferrari have been doing it just not as well
>>
>>74914442
Purely because they were using oil in their fuel but did not submit the oil mix in their fuel as a fuel sample makes it against the rules regardless if there was a loophole or not
>>
>>74914493
>Ferrari isn't blowing this shit out of proportions to smear shit all over Mercedes

Because they were actually smart.

While Red Bull and Horner put their energy in to getting oil burning stopped (which it seems they were successful at), Ferrari instead put their energy in to getting hydro suspensions banned (also successfully).
>>
>>74914532

Exactly.
>>
>>74914520
I'm afraid this is it.
The reason why there are 40billion rules is not to regulate into better racing, its to stop (all) teams from getting overly enthusiastic in the 'creative' department.
>>
>>74914520

Please show me races where Ferrari used a special higher engine mode in Q3, and before/after pitstops.

I'll wait.
>>
whats oilgate pls explain
>>
>>74914659

Engines are limited in the amount of fuel they can use (instantly, not just over a race distance), which limits power
Mercedes cheated by burning engine oil as fuel in their special high power engine mode, which they used during qualifying and to defend/attack during pitstops

Mercedes engineers left Mercedes and went to other teams, and told the other teams about it.
The other teams went public with the accusations, and now Mercedes don't so it any more (or were told not to do it anymore), and thus don't have their huge situational engine advantage any more.
>>
>>74914358
I find it hilarious actually
Mercedes to the public:
>our engine is so efficient this truly is green energy every lap we do is refreezing the polar ice caps
Mercedes in private:
>YO WE ROLLIN COAL NIGGAS HAMMERTIME DAWG LOOK AT DAT THICC BLACK SMOKE CHOKE IT UP BITCH
>>
Does oil gate mean it's hams fault again for Malaysia
>desperately needs to do well in qualy and runs this higher stress mode
>needs to do well in the race so runs this high stress mode more and longer

Who will McLaren get to replace Alonso for next season? And what if Alonso drops out before the end of the season, who will they get then? Button is the """""reserve driver""""""" but he won't come back to drive that shitbox.

And Vandoorne has contract only for 2017, what if he goes, too?
>>
>>74914541
>While Red Bull and Horner put their energy in to getting oil burning stopped

Renault too apparently.

>Renault’s MD for F1 Cyril Abiteboul, welcomed the clarification of the rules saying that it was good to know what was, or wasn’t permitted.
>“We were not attacking anyone in particular. But we needed to make sure that it is clear to everyone, and it can be properly monitored and also enforced that fuel should remain the primary combustible used in F1.”
>“We can refer to the spirit of the regulations – the combustibles are clear for everyone that they should be fuel – but having said that any engine will burn oil.
>“But whether you burn oil for lubrication or as a combustible is something completely different. What we feel is that we need to be extremely clear about what should be the spirit, and we need to be clear also and that should be the FIA’s responsibility to make sure that it is enforceable. I accept that it is challenging.”

Why am I not surprised that the media made a big deal about Red Bull and Horner """""complaining""""", but were practically silent when Renault did the same.
