1509 days ago, I was finishing up a shift at work. It was hot, the air con wasn't working, and I was just over it. Here I was, thinking, "oh well, it's over now. I can go home, cool down, and have a few (read; thirty) Zooper Doopers."

I went up to my locker, entered the combo, and saw my phone lit up; at least 6 people had contacted me asking what happened to Essendon. Now I'm as big of an Essendon fan as you're likely to meet, and I'd heard nothing of any goings on, so I was a little dumbfounded.

Hopping in the car, I switched to 1116AM, SEN; thinking that they would have a decent synopsis on the situation for me. Instead, there were people calling up and asking for the club to be banned from the league. Shit, what in the hell happened?

Fast forward to now, the 25th of March, 2017.

Four years have passed. Essendon are onto their third coach in that period. We have been punished from pillar to post; losing draft picks, millions of dollars, losing valuable players, and, perhaps the worst of the lot, the game very nearly lost one of its most enduring characters, and one of its absolute champions. My childhood hero, James Hird. Thankfully, he is on the road to recovery, and will be, hopefully, returning to normality.

I often get people chastising me for being so passionate about this sport, but it's given me so much joy. The past four years, I've had to distance myself from it. I couldn't tell people my team. If I mentioned to people that I was an Essendon fan, you know exactly where the conversation would head. And I hated it. I couldn't talk about one of the most important things in my life, and it killed me. I put myself away from footy, purely because I couldn't enjoy a normal talk about it anymore.

1509 days, and finally, FINALLY, it's over. Footy is back, the Bombers are back, and we're ready to take the AFL by storm.
