OKC switch on defense more than the Bulls and Westbrook may not even be the man that's supposed to guard the person taking a shot but because he happens to be near by according to shot contest stats, which are determined by closest defender and further defined by how far away they were (2-5 up to 15 feet or more) it clearly makes Westbrook look bad because he's leaving other players on the court to get long distance rebounds that other people on his team aren't getting and increases OKC's rebounding rate which is one of the best in the league and was #1 last year.

My issue with this isn't that he's getting easy rebounds, it's his poor defensive stats, lack of contests, and opposing guards shooting +6.9% over expected FG% against russ which is last in the NBA among guards.

Contested shots isn't even a good measure for perimeter players because they switch a lot and get caught in pick and rolls that make it almost impossible to seriously contest a jump shot unless they're the person supposed to switch from defending the roll man.

Teams that switch a lot are also more likely to have their PG hidden on the corner. Curry is infamous for this and guards SFs and PFs on average while Iggy and Klay guard the PG/SG depending on who's more of a threat.

I think it's less that it's blasphemous to suggest the numbers are inflated, and more that people take umbrage with the assertion that they're inflated for the sole purpose of Russ having higher rebound totals. It seems that the team is largely comfortable with the trade offs being made for those boards. I think one more thing people are missing is that the Thunder kinda need Russ to conserve some energy on the defensive end- the offense really doesn't work if he can't go all out on that end. I think the balance is slightly off right now, and they would be better off if Russ expended a little more effort on the defensive end. But I think the general notion that "Russ is being lazy on defense just so he can get triple doubles" is really what his fans are taking issue with.

A player contesting more shots is a bad thing. That means they're more often being exposed on defense as they're targeted based off reputation as a bad defender.

Look at the actual list of contests and you'll see mixed in there are a bunch of bad defenders (according to eye test) and then there are even more according to the same advanced stats being improperly used by redditors. When your Center has a high amount of contests it means your perimeter defense isn't properly keeping the attacker from the rim, which shows a lack of team defense. A center rim protecting is the last option, not the wanted effect.

Robin Lopez is not a great defender because he contests a lot of shots.

I really like this new Westrook term. I'm gonna start screamin it at people in pickup games when they ain't playing defense.
