I actually think more people (players and viewers) would care if it were held every year. The annual Asia Series isn't being held any more; this could and should take its place on a larger scale.

But it has to be designed not to screw with the health of the pro players. You can't expect those participants to add a whole extra month of high-intensity play to their seasons when their health, millions of dollars, and club performance are on the line. If they shortened the MLB season and made sure that pro teams were somehow compensated with the proceeds of the tournament based on player participation, you might find more support from team ownership and players. Besides less money for team owners due to fewer games, another problem is that season records based on accumulation (hits, HRs, SB, etc.) have been based on 162-game seasons for a long-ass time now, and nobody would be able to break them any more.

But shortening the season would probably be required to make an extended tournament work for participating MLB players, who would still be put at a disadvantage to all the non-participating MLB players in terms of rest.

(BTW MLB's all-star game is without question the most significant ASG in all of the sports world, even disregarding the home field advantage stuff.)

My thought would be that Randy would give them the best chance. At that point in his career he was about the best power pitcher since peak Nolan Ryan, and I think where the 116-win Mariners team scuffled was their starting pitching, as they had literally no one good after Freddy Garcia in the rotation. Had Randy been a Mariner at that point, I'd say they go all the way and beat the Yankees and D-bags in 6 or 7 for both series.

I don't think Griffey, as weird as this sounds, would have made as much an impact compared to A-Rod or Randy in 2001. Mike Cameron was a really good replacement for him and had an incredible season. the OF had a lot of depth defensively and offensively compared to SS and the starting rotation.

On the other hand, Randy would have made a good pitching staff much, much better and would have probably run away with the AL CY Young playing in Safeco. He would have also given the bullpen some rest as well. the M's could have won 120+ games if Randy was on that roster.

Then you have A-Rod. Compare A-Rod's 2001 season to Carlos Guillen's. it's night and fucking day.

So if I were to rank the importance of them, I would go:

1. Randy
2. A-Rod
3. Griffey

Regardless, the fact that the M's management let all 3 walk still gives me nightmares.

While I have you all here, what do you think of loading up on pitchers early in the draft? Has anyone done it before? I just tried it for the first time, and I like the way my team looks. I typically don't go after a closer until the end of the draft, but I figured I'd try it for the sake of the argument.
Also, didn't draft Ozuna. Got disconnected and it autopicked him.
