literally the only reason to watch march madness, or college basketball at all, is to see small school teams destroy the dreams of big name powerhouses.

Why not? Automatic bids have no place in the tournament, they're just cannon fodder for the perennial blue bloods in the first round. Of course there's no way you're going to get anybody to voluntarily give up ad bux, so you can't contract the tournament, but you can at least do something about the quality of the teams making it in.

No more losing records in conference tournaments (conference record or overall). If you sucked ass in the regular season then you can fuck right off and try again next year. Regular season champ gets an automatic bye into the final, and everybody else plays for the right to play them. We'll weed out some of the meme teams that get hot on a single weekend out of the year this way.

This should help out a little bit, and some better at-larges should get in as a result too. Every year there's a really good mid-major that fucks up in their conference tournament, so not only do they get in but that shit tourney winner is taking up somebody else's spot as well. Although in all honesty, the March Madness days of yore are probably gone forever with the 30 second shot clock. More possessions obviously favors your stronger teams and allows them to shake really sloppy first halves. Your cinderellas can't bleed the clock like they used to and they don't have the depth and conditioning to run up and down the floor for 40 minutes like the big names do.

Why change it?
