On the backs you will lose the ball in some passes, catches and contacts. But if you can fall back on your good forwards you will win a lot of those back. Hell kicking for touch off of the penalties you will force on the worse forwards could single handedly win you the game because you will win your line out and could just drive it over.

The other way around you will end up with backs that end up isolated with only backs for support vs the quicker returning strong forwards. They will score more flashy "plays of the season" but at the cost of losing more games vs the forward focused team 2bh.


If I had to pick between a team of average backs and good forwards vs average forwards and good backs I would pick the former over the latter every time.

Bad backs will still make tackles but will be drawn in and sold dummies more often. But if they try tackle you would more often than not be tackled. You don't really see any players, even average ones with less than ~65% tackle success.

I'm trying to think of examples but their aren't many teams heavily one way or the other.
I keep thinking back to the old blues teams way back with all the flashy fast backs and pretty much "who's" for forwards and how they just didn't work as a team and when they came up against the SA teams with strong forwards they would roll over and die.

It's almost like asking why did the SH teams do better last RWC than NH, I don't think a single NH team could boast having better forwards then, but a couple of teams could probably say they had better backs than their quarter final counterparts. Obviously this is in general and I don't follow NH rugby that closely so I could be a bit off base there.

Good forwards make the backs look good, bad forwards make the backs look bad. Backs just don't really influence the forwards in the same magnitude.
