yeah but being consistently great for entire seasons probably says more than being consistently great in a single elimination tournament. at Kansas Self has still won a championship, made it back to the championship game, and made it to the elite 8 a handful of other times. sometimes shit happens in single elimination tournaments. happens to other great coaches too. he has definitely underachieved some seasons though.

the thing about MSU is that they just aren't that good. they have one elite player (who is a frosh), a couple good players, and a bunch of meh players. if it's true what they say about guard play being the difference in the tourney, Izzo is fucked. I mean the guy could be far and away the best coach in college basketball (not saying he is), and he still probably couldn't get very far.

Even on that infinite timescale that people like to talk about, I can't see a 16 beating a 1. The 16 seeded schools are basically glorified Division I-AA programs who lost a pile of games against shit competition, and had to have one good weekend to lock in a bid. Your 1 seeds aren't just good, they're rewarded with that seeding for consistency. Teams like Duke, UK, and UCLA *might* be the best on their A game, but they're also prone to games where they completely self destruct and let inferior competition mop up. You don't see that as much with your 1 seeds. They're fundamentally sound and relatively consistent from start to finish.

The thing is, one of those consistent programs is going to have to be down by at least 10 with under 5 minutes remaining, and I think that's being generous. The 16s are never going to have the depth or wherewithal to sustain their performance when the game is on the line against a squad that knows what they're doing. I'd really like to be proven wrong on this, because I think it'd be a great thing to see happen. I'm just not entirely sure that it can.

Maybe once upon a time, but they've had a real program rolling there for a while now. I mean they're very clearly the weakest #1 with the lowest ceiling for potential, but they play solid basketball and don't make many mistakes. Plus this is a veteran team that's already made some progress in the tournament.

If a team like UK had grabbed a #1 I would say that they were the most upset prone, not a team like Gonzaga. The day that a 1 seed gets bounced immediately almost has to be an all freshman team that doesn't know what the fuck they're doing.
