The Patriots had like 50 mil in cap space this offseason. They have to spend it on something to reach the spending floor. When the Patriots can effectively control a player for 2 years 9 mil AAV when his market value might be closer to 12, they have no reason not to do so. It might feel shitty if you're Butler and want a big contract, but that's not the way the CBA works. Then at the end of those 2 years they can let him test the market and sign him to a long-term deal or let him walk if they want.

the loss of tj lang and last year's complete bumbling of Sitton's contract, coupled with absolutely no viable answer to the 2016 season's awful cornerback situation are a large part of it, yes.

There's only slightly less to complain about the offense if you think Ty Montgomery and Lance Kendricks/Martellus Bennett are enough to compensate for the potential loss of Lacy/Cook (and maybe they are! it's a completely defensible argument to make!), but the offense had to overcome very daunting odds when playing with last year's defense and there's not much reason to think it will be any better this year.

Pats are the top landing spot. the Jets are a dumpster fire and New England has more money if it comes down to a bidding war(not that Bill does bidding wars). Jets just trying to drive up his price.

Malcolm is practically enslaved for the next 2 years.

He could get signed by somebody else but they'd have to give up a 1st round pick on top of paying his asking price (Gilmore level dosh from what I hear). its too steep a price for him despite his talent.

also, his agent is retarded.
>>
>>74655530
the packers have a lot of depth at oline positions. It sucks, but lang was always injured anyway. Lacy has spent more time on the bench this year than off it. Ty has earned his spot for now, we'll just have to see if he can keep up with a starting RB position. I think they will draft a new RB in the first 3 rounds. Bennett and Kendricks are both better than cook. He will slip back into obscurity for some mediocre team. The real loss was Hyde. He was so versatile and a great playmaker. He was just too slow though, the packers need more speed.
The last season ended at the NFCCG so I'm not too worried. The real thing they need is another good linebacker to help the Perry/Matthews combo. Peppers has two years left in the league anyway and was asking for more money than he was worth. I think we're going to see Jake Ryan or Blake Martinez come into form this year.
A little perspective: the packers get to the NFCCG about every three years average. If they really want to seal the deal this time, they need a shutdown corner. All the pieces are just about in place. They just need to draft or FA a good one that will stay healthy.

all of these are very good points. all I would say is that (1). while Ty has earned his spot, it's far from certain he'll be able to stay intact for a full season (he started out as a WR after all and has far from the body mass typical of an RB, as many fat jokes as you want to make about Lacy), (2) as poorly as Cook might fit into a different team, he was absolutely a playmaker when he was healthy and arguably was the player that enabled the Pack to even make it to the NFCCG, (3). I'm not so sure the packers really have that much depth at oline, given the vulnerabilities shown during injuries last season, and (4). while Thompson has begrudgingly shown more willingness to draft free agents, I'm going to remain skeptical that he's going to do so to help the CB situation until such a signing actually happens.

In short, I think the oline position has been getting weaker and our 3-NCFFG-per-year average is only going to get shallower in the coming years, but I'm a pessimist and it's good to hear from someone who isn't as negative :)

*1NFCCG-per-3-years

>>
>>74655674
what did his agent do exactly?
>>
>>74655763
gotta relax bro
the packers won't play without a great oline. It comes from the ron wolf mentality with favre. Bahktiari, spriggs, taylor, and bulaga are all solid, plus I bet they will draft more backups to refill the roster.
I think if Ted hasn't gotten a new CB by now, he is looking at the draft. Plus don't underestimate how injured the CBs were this year. They played a lot of different people in CB, including the practice squad and other positions. If Randall, rollins, and gunter can stay healthy enough (they all had leg injuries that never quite healed throughout the season), the secondary will at least be ranked 25 or higher. Thats all they need.
I don't think lacy is going anywhere. He is still in a 1 year deal with the packers, and nobody really wants someone with his history of injury, especially since its all entirely from his weight which is controllable. They also have Christian Michael, who I doubt is going anywhere either
it might not be the year this year, but it is possible for the team to improve quite a bit over the next two years

>>
>>74655978
Oh he's staying. A team would have to give up a first round pick plus pay him 15m a year. The market for CB's is bad right now, so Butler doesn't have much of a choice.

It's like your kid threatening to move out even though he's only 12.
>>
>>74655978
he's a restricted free agent.

they put a first round tender on him giving him like $4 million. if a team signs him, they have to give up a first round draft pick. factor in that he's asking for like north of $10 million a year. That's too steep.

that's on top of the "right of first refusal" meaning the Pats can match an offer made on him and retain him or just let him walk.

Similar to how they got Hogan last season (Buffalo had some cap issues and didn't value Hogan enough to match the offer. I don't remember what Hogan's tender was but I know it was much lower)

Eventually he'll cave and sign the tender and be back for the year. then Bill will tag him for the next season (about $9 million). Or they'll trade him.

If he leaves its because somebody is willing to stupidly overpay or Bill trades him. Butler has no leverage and ain't going anywhere
>>

packers worked out their issues that plagued them the first half of the last season and carried themselves into a deep playoff run.

His agent's first big contract negotiation.

Butler may be worth $13 million on the open market, which is what he wants. He's not on the open market, though, and can be tendered for $3.9 mil.

Assuming the Pats did want to give him a Gilmore deal, they'd start with $3.9 mil for 2017, and $13 million thereafter.

That averages to $11.1 mil a year over 5 years.

Butler's agent wants the Patriots to consider Butler as an UFA, which they won't do as it's akin to pissing away money and sets a terrible precedent for future negotiations.

As for why sign Gilmore and not pay Butler - By signing Gilmore, they solve the problem of not having a #1 CB, and they can still package Butler for more picks.

Sign Gilmore, trade Butler - Draft picks, #1 corner.

Sign Butler - #1 corner

And this is why Bill and thus by extension, the Pats are the best in the business. They know exactly what they're doing, how they'll do it, and weigh out every scenario with one thing in mind; the success of the franchise year in and year out.

The NFL is a business through and through and yet so many other teams have sacred cows and horrible contracts coupled with lack of good management. The Pays are the only team that get it. The salary cap era was designed to keep things "fair" but as displayed with this run, that whole design can be circumvented simply by treating your players as commodities and understanding it's better to get the most value out of a player for the least dollars, able to spread the wealth to the team as a whole. It's also understanding it's better to cut bait a year early as opposed to a year late. And yes, having your HoF QB sign for less than market value and renegotiate whenever called upon definitely helps but the fact remains it goes deeper than that.
When will the rest of the league understand this?

Elliot is overrated as fuck imo. He plays behind one of, if not the best, O-line in the league. I know it's not exactly fair to knock him for something he has no control over but he's yet to prove his value yet.

I'm not saying he couldn't be worth it, just that he hasn't had enough time to prove whether he is or not yet.

I would hardly call Spriggs solid yet, can improve yes but hasn't shown that he's that ready.
Letting go of lang was somewhat expected, but lane surprised everyone when sitton was released, you can't expect that to happen again so easily.
I don't see any way whatsoever that tt will get a top tier cb fa, and that's what the packers need. Ive seen enough of Randall to not expect more than sub-serviceable play with some splash play potential. Same with Rollins. Gunter needs help to be effective. 1 on 1 vs any decent wr and he's exposed.
"The year" should have been last year or the one before. AR clock is ticking. No tine to draft and develop supporting cast

He's an RFA, not a UFA. Theyre treating him like one. He wants UFA money and no one's going to give him that AND give the Pats their first rounder. He's assblasted they paid Gilmore top UFA money but Butler isn't there yet. He also turned down an offer last season before it even got to this point.

I really think his agent is just retarded and is trying to hardball with an organization that doesn't give a fuck.

They let Peyton Hillis go because he was one step from the mental ward. Richardson had a good rookie season, then proceeded to show that, unlike college, he couldn't outrun or run over anybody.

Then they had Terrence West and Crow. West was a 2,000 yard meme rusher in FCS couldn't stay away from Twitter wars and shitposting. Without a zone blocking scheme, he's worthless. Crow has been a surprise as he was an undrafted FA and has improved each year. I think he's plateaued though.

>...have you seen Rodgers defenses...
Packers have had an above average scoring defense 5 times in the last 8 seasons.

Saints are consistently bottom 10 with a few exceptions
>>
>>74660758
Than Brady, yes; but Brady doesn't even have the same production as Brees. God knows he destroyed the league with Randy Moss. I do think Brady's still the best QB the league has.

But than Rodgers? Remove Brees and the team is shit, remove Rodgers and you had Matt Flynn throwing >400 yards. I mean, Colston was his best receiver and doesn't even have a pro bowl appereance.

There's no convincing argument about who's better between the two. For every negative there's a positive.
>>
>>74660848
No you're just ignoring every counter point because you don't want to believe what is LITERAL known fact
And Flynn had literally one good game
The packers are dogshit without rodgers
>>
>>74660848
Brady could have had 40 TDs last year if not for LeGoallineman, that's why TDs and passer rating on their own can be heavily skewed
>>
>>74659784
that's not a very flattering picture of either of those guys...
>>
>>74660848
that was a meaningless week 17 game where both teams had already clinched playoff spots

how about in 2013 when the packers were dogshit when rodgers went down?
>>
>>74658213
I'm of the personal belief that Chip Kelly should have given Foles one more season. Not to mention he had Jeff Fischer as his head coach for a season. He's been notorious for destroying QBs. He's an Adequate QB and much better than having someone like Mark Sanchez as your Backup.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. They wouldn't be a perennial 12+ win team without consistent HoF level QB play but the organisation was able to pick up some great talent in the Manning years.

Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne, Jeff Saturday, Edgerrin James, Bob Sanders, Dwight Freeney, Robert Mathis, Tarik Glenn

Luck has it much worse

>>
>>74661256
what?

they hadn't won anything yet but they weren't toxic

Bellichick blew up Pete's roster, they had no chance in 2000

the reason for the turn around in 2001 was because their defense went from 17th in scoring defense to 6th

Brady threw only 1 td that entire postseason

the colts have been dysfunctional since the Irsay family bought the team

Kraft at least made it to an owl pre Brady/Bellichick

Not that sad to see him gone, he was really only good for run-stuffing when Schwartz's defense relies entirely on pressure

True brady deserves a lot of credit, he was much better than Bledsoe that season but Bledsoe was also a poor fit for Bellichick.

Bellichick likes field generals much more than gunslingers like Bledsoe, bledsoe was just left over inheritance.

But my point really is if you read up on what's happened to the colts since Robert Irsay bought the team you'd see how dysfunctional it really is.

Their only stretch of success was with Peyton, and that's not a coincidence.

Not the anon but he did break the passing yards record and Johnny Unitas record for most consecutive games with a passing TD. Brees is that rare passer where he IS the system. His shit head former d coordinator, goodell, and the aints GM hasn't done him many favors over the years. Basically slammed his playoff window shut between sanctions/shitty drafts/over paying then trading Graham.
