>>
I've been watching Italy for over 10 years and it's still the same story every fucking time.
>Strong start, gain a lead even vs England or NZ
>This lasts for 5 minutes, then the other team catches up and takes the lead back
>60 minutes in: total collapse. Not rare to see the other team score 3 tries in 5-10 minutes
How does this happen? It's like they make it their game plan, even across different coaching eras.
>>
>>74619331
They lost against fucking Japan, m8

In the last 2 years, they had their first loss against Japan, their first loss in Argentina, their first loss in Italia, their first home loss against Argentina, their first home loss against Ireland...

They're just sinking faster than a million Titanics.

rugby has become a sport for bigger cities... Toulouse, Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux, Montpellier, Clermont, Toulon, Grenoble... Cities like Brive, Castres or Bayonne are anomalies now, and in fact can consider themselves lucky that northen France doesn't give a fuck about rugby, and therefore are free from the concurrence of cities like Nantes, Lille, Le Havre, Strasbourg, Tours, Rennes, Nancy, Le Mans, Dijon, Rouen... that are all much bigger than them.

The same can be said for all those cities you cited too actually... The Lourdes, Béziers, Agen, Montauban, Bourgoin, Colomiers, Biarritz, Perpignan, Dax, Narbonne, Aurillac...

so, england will obviously take the grand slam and the win record, on top of improving exponentially during the time left until they meet nz in 2018

No. Highlanders and Canes are both neutral because they're irrelevant. The Crusaders are /rug/'s boogeyman and probably the most hated team in the comp, so they're bad guys.

The Blues are the somewhat affable underdog and the Chiefs are the quintessential rugby team. They are what other teams should strive to be, and therefore they are the biggest good guys of them all.

What is your least favourite aspects of rugby union?
For me it's the high attrition rate and commonality of injuries. I want to watch two full strength teams going at eachother for 80.
Case in point the scots against england earlier, or the last time Ireland played Australia. Such a disservie to the sport.

Pitty it seems that the nz franchises are becoming increasinly dominant in super rug, as I said earlier in teh thread I want so bad for the fucking aus franchises to come good. Same with italy for that matter but lets be realistic.

This.

With it being such a high scoring sport, small diffferences tend to lead to big scores. It's anti-competitive a lot of the times and that takes enjoyment away from the game when you can predict who will win 99% of the time.

However, it does make upsets that bit more special.

Lads I'm sick of football and want to start watching rugby league as they seem to care more for the fans and the tickets are reasonably priced. I'm thinking of supporting Widnes as it's my gfs local team, the nearest team to me is Wigan. Is this a bad choice? Supporting Wigan seems like easy mode.

Not him.

Yeah, I'm quite amaze by what they're accomplishing so far. I didn't paid attention to them until they beat Toulouse, in a away game.
If I'm not mistaken this is where Loann Goujon and Kevin Gourdon are currently playing at. They have two really solid kickers with Zack Holmes (who they lose to Toulouse next season) and Brock James. They also field a solid center pairing Botia-Aguillon.

Forward-wise, our favorite memester Fat Fuck Truck is also playing there but they also field Jason Eaton, Jony Qovu and Victor Vito.

From what I also heard, they also have a solid financial basis and are developping infrastructures along the lines you can find with Toulouse or Clermont. So, they can have a run for their money for the Top 14, I'm not sure if it is on the long run but I won't discard them too quickly either. Not to mention that, the Poitou-Charentes rugby comity is one of the most performing in youth competitions.

Two things: how can a Scottish team that has improved so much in the last couple of years suddenly play like the brain-dead veterans' 3rd XV?
And how can a team that played like England did yesterday have played the whole of the last world cup like they didn't know what a rugby ball was?
>>

Furlong > Cole
Murray > Youngs
Liam Williams > Nowell
Hogg >>>>>>>>> Brown

Those are the main places where a non-English player is clearly the better option. Other guys like Sexton, Warburton/Tipuric/Watson or one of the Gray brothers might squeeze in after a good tour as well

AWJ really shouldn't be picked but I suspect he'll make it. Locks really should just be Launchbury/Lawes/Itoje and the Gray brothers. If you were going to take a welsh lock it might as well be Charteris since he does have a unique skill set. AWJ is inferior to the English locks in athleticism and the Scottish locks in work rate. His only real asset is just experience

Yes, but the problem is that Gatland will probably take Warburton as captain, and if he doesn't he'll take AWJ.
Personally I'd go for Best to lead. Before this tournament I'd have taken Nel, at least as sub. Now it's definitely Furlogn, with Cole to offer some experience.

The Gray brothers should both tour.

>>74647753

>>
>>74647808
Kruis because he's been injured and probably won't be Lions fit in time.
>>
>>74647808
Tbh, I'd boot AWJ. With your side, just make Warburton captain again. None of the Welsh, Scottish or Irish second rows should start over Launchbury or Itoje at current performance.
Then but Lawes or Kruis on the bench. AWJ doesn't even bring that much mroe in terms of leadership right now.
>>
>>74647848

Fair enough. Shame for him because he's quality.

>>74647775

I stand by those picks. Centre options are crap and Te'o has proven to be a handy impact player. He's a Gatland wet dream of a back so he'll definitely go.

Stander, and Warburton are the form flankers, Vunipola is the best 8 and Faletau is versatile. Who else would you pick? Haskell? Moriarty? They're much of the sameness.
>>
>>74647910
Huw Jones, Henshaw and Scott Williams are better players than Te'o. Warburton and Tipuric should be the flank pairing with Stander on the bench. I'd take Haskell and maybe Faletau (along with Barclay) though
>>
>>74647903
Launch should definitely start, but looking at the stats for the last round him and AWJ were clearly the best locks with a substantial amount of daylight between them and the rest.
>>
>>74647950

Yesterday ended any chance of Huw Jones being selected to tour. Henshaw has done nothing to warrant selection either but he'll go regardless.

Tipuric will go to New Zealand just because he offers something different to the other 6 backrow gym monkey's but I don't think he's been good enough this tournament to start.
>>
>>74647993
Yet Itoje played flank. And while he's getting better at it, he's still one of the best locks in the world right now. I'd probably include him in a world xv.

>>74648027
Itoje has been playing at lock. Have you actually been watching the rugby? He had 6 on his back but has been playing lock. Either way, his stats were worse than both Warburton and Stander at 6 and the two best locks from the weekend.

Joseph was jogging through the Scottish midfield in the first half. Jones was only spared further embarrassment when he got shifted out to the wing.

There's no way Gatland's taking any Scottish backs on yesterdays performance. Going into the match I'd have said Russell, Huw Jones/Dunbar, Hogg and Seymour were touring but now it might only be Hogg.

The biggest loser of the weekend was Finn Russell. RIPIP Lions dreams.

>>

>>
>>74647808
just make Hartley captain. He's not great but has a proven captaincy track record which is damn impressive, and it's not like the other hooker options are so great that he'd be keeping a genuinely awesome player out of the starting team

whereas if you pick AWJ or Warburton you're limiting your second row options in positions where there's legitimate depth
>>
>>74650543
While AWJ isn't nailed on, Warburton pretty much is. Stander carries well at club level and against milquetoast defences but struggles against big teams, Barclay has been playing like a poor man's Warburton and England haven't really played a traditional back row. Haskell is his only real competition for a flank berth and is generally a much more limited player than Sam

Stander made a fantastic carry against us in the first half on Friday. Ghosted through our midfield and nearly scored. After that we got the measure of him but to be fair, the Welsh defence is one of the most resolute in the world against direct ball carriers.

Still, you'd think having Stander and Vunipola running at Kiwis with Faletau or Haskell coming on for the last 20 would cause serious problems. I imagine Stander would benefit greatly from having another major ball carrying threat in the back row (ie. Vunipola). Would take a lot of attention off of him and he's absolutely brutal in space.

For Ireland he has to line up alongside SOB who's in horrendous form, and Heaslip who is just shit, to be frank.

>mfw Heaslip could be going on his third Lions tour

>>
>>74650679
>>74651093
I actually think England are on to something with their two proper locks + Itoje strategy. I think that could be pretty effective against NZ. Lots of people are underwhelmed but I actually think Itoje has been getting better and better at 6 the more time he plays there (and that's while he's actually still packing down at lock in the scrum)
>>
>>74648280
He plays lock in scrums, but is 6 in open play.
>>
>>74651131

I guess it depends if you rate Launchbury/AWJ/Gray more highly than Stander or Haskell or whoever, because by shifting Itoje to 6 you're sacrificing a very good flanker.
>>
>>74651093
The problem with picking two carriers against NZ will be that we need to actually win ball. We need a carrier, but gaining turnovers and dominating the gainline defensively will be just as, if not more important than doing it with the ball in hand (especially for a scratch side). Having flankers that can cover a lot of ground, be good for 20+ tackles and a few turnovers is more important than flankers good for 40 carrying yards and half a dozen tackles.
Big carriers have more of a place on the bench I think.
>>
>>74651216
another thing to consider if you had a pack of (hypothetically) Launchbury, Lawes/Gray, Itoje and Tipuric, you've got 4 high-quality line-out options and still get to carry Billy Vunipola at 8. Being able to potentially disrupt the ABs lineout possession could be huge
>>
>>74651216
Itoje is perfect for the bench second row slot IMO. Allows whoever you pick to start in the locks to empty the tank for the first 50 and then bring on someone to up the intensity even further. The bench back row slot is between Haskell/Stander for my money. Playing Farrell at 12 also frees up a bench slot for a specialist impact centre (not Te'o before anyone says it)
>>
>>74651376
Warburton and AWJ are good lineout operators as well. The latter nicked two Irish throws on Friday and disrupted a couple more.

>>74651496

I think he should be given the time and looked at in the latter rounds of the Pro 12 and CC to prove himself

>>74651131
Nah, the Lions could have the upper hand in the backrow and maybe approach parity at lock

Playing Itoje at 6 means youre missing out on either Warburton, Stander, Robshaw etc. which fucks that over

>>
>>74619383
South Africa's collapsing. They get paid nothing at home. They have 6 Super Rugby teams, and only 2 are competitive, and it'll get worse. All their best players are now in Japan or Europe. Even the black South african rugby players are leaving for elsewhere. The South african teams are home babies and only South African refs referee South african games. There was one reds lions game with a 17 to 4 penalty count.

What annoys me is 4 of the 6 South african teams don't even play the kiwis at all each year. They're literally stat padding against theOr own weak teams like cheetahs, Kings, plus Japan, Arg.

The only reason super rugby is failing is because of South Africa. They are the ones that forced the meme 4 group comp, instead of a logical 3x 6 teams grouping (5 Aus and Japan, 5 kiwi and Arg, 6 SA).

A trans Tasman competition would be so much cheaper and easier to run. 4 Australian teams, 6 Nz, Argentina, Japan. Nice even super 12s.
>>
>>74657554
that would be highly dependent on their pooling.

Ireland U teams are actually good imo, they faired well in the U worldc up. So I wouldnt be surprised if they make it out of the pool.

And Joe might be kept for another year afterward after the WC. As it will be with most coaches around that time, their contract will be dependent on their WC performance.

No sport can live in Paris. This city doesn't give a single fuck about it. It took them about 20 years to be able to fill their stadium in divegrass. They can't even fill a tiny 3000 seats arena in basketball, handball or volleyball. And their rugby teams can barely attrack 10k people, most of them from free tickets handed to them for advertisement, and the 2 clubs are existing at this level only because they're the toys of some billionnaire sugardaddies. In a multimillion people city, that sit in the middle of a 12 millions people urban area.

That's fucking pathetic.

>>
>>74657663
Because of the huge demand for kiwi players in europe, a lot of spots open up in Super rugby teams, so 7s players often get promoted up. This is happening earlier than it used to. Previously it was a lot harder to crack the super teams, so players would just stay playing 7s. Also there is more money in 15s so of course they're going to chase that.

I guess South Africa has the athletes to be good at 7s. It requires little tactics and there really isn't a pathway from 7s to super rugby teams any more. Look at how dire the backs are in any South African 15s team is.

That sounds like something you just made up mate. Though I can imagine 1%'s don't really care if they get sick or not because their business's run fine without them and having a sniffle gives them a great excuse to have a couple of weeks off.

They're not trying to create anything, it's just that the family of Stade Français' owner has been pissed for years at him squandering the family's wealth in the club.

So while they present it as a merging, the reality is more like his family was pissed to the point of no return and forced him to abandon ship. Meanwhile, Racing Métro owner doesn't have this kind of problems and both saw an opportunity here: Stade Français owner to discard it, Racing Métro owner to absorb a concurrent from the same city.

The reality is just that it's Racing Métro buying Stade Français.

Vaccinates you against whichever strains of the flu they predict are going to be big that year. Influence has incredible genetic diversity compared to other viruses, so you can't inoculate against all of them, only the best guess about which strains are about.

Where our sickly and malnourished kiwi friend gets it wrong is that if he already has the flu there is literally no point getting an inoculation because it's too fucking late.

I've never had a flu jab in my life and I've had the flu once. I apparently need to start getting it though because my gf is immune compromised and needs herd immunity.

>>
Just heard the news of the RM92 - Stade Français merging. Now my question, is this club legitimate to even take part of the Top14? If a club is defined as brand new, it should be relegated - thus saving one of club being promised to be relegated - read Grenoble.

Even then, Grenoble is royally screwed because they came to the end of their next season recrutment - again, read a ProD2 recrutment phase. Not to mention the mess it is going to create with contracts and clauses - it is said that Rory Grice has signed at Clermont on behalf of a performance clause that can be cancelled. Not to mention once again what would happen to the actual players of both club to whom they were being ask to quit volontarily their own club.

The whole thing is going to create a gigantic mess on multiple scales.

On second thought, if I was a recruter, I would start to put the pressure to try to sign people like Chavency, Macalou, Fartass ; in short, young promising players because there is a lot of them with an uncertain future coming with that...

Curious so looked at La Rochelles signings

So the key is to buy class, fringe squad players that still have a lot to prove rather than washed out cocaine addled, drunk driving superstars

TOD strikes me as the kind of player than when the pashun is on the table he'll do a job for ya but when it's a standard kind of game he just doesn't show up. Unlike heaslip he always works himself to the limit, albeit ineffectually at times, see vs wlaes.

For any of you degenerate plebs that haven't been watching the Chiefs this guy has been immense the last few games. Huge, consistent defence against the best offences in New Zealand.

Mentioning it because a lot of casuals wanna start Joseph for dicking over some drunk and demoralised Scotsman. I can see a guy like Joseph getting outplayed completely by Lienert Brown and think we need a steadier centre.

I've always thought a centre should make plays when he needs to but not forcing it. Sometimes this means going game seemingly doing very little but not making mistakes. Conrad Smith was very good at this

Even before Luatuas red card he was bottling up Reiko like nothing.

Still surprised he got the call up initially but yh he is all class. I am very very nervous the media here will hype up Joseph and severely underrate ALB
>>
>>74667286
ALB could fill GOATrads shoes 2bh
He is very close to having the same traits as Smith, given some more time he could do it
>great defensive player
>makes the right tackle on the right person
>knows when to wrap up the arms vs tackling around the ankles
>great at drawing a player to make the player outside him look good
>good cheeky unexpected chip

Literally every great play of Nonu was constructed by Smith. It pains me that people rate Nonu over him

Reminder that the Welsh National Rugby Union Team traveled to NZ and got absolutely spanked by the Gallagher Chiefs who had more than half their players missing.

Further reminder that after this embarrassing loss the British and Irish Lions tried to back pedal on their contract which has them playing weakened New Zealand Super Rugby teams mid week. They then entered damage control a year before a game was meant to be played saying they players will be over worked and be unable to perform at their usual strength during the tour.

Northern Hemisphere rugby literally shakes in their boots at the idea of playing weakened Club rugby teams, and us Kiwis know a lot about shaking.

Super Rugby should really just focus on the core 4 Rugby Championship teams

>Atlantic Conference
-5 SA teams
-4 Argentine teams (2x Buenos Aires, 1 Tucuman, 1 Rosario/Salta/Mendoza)

>Pacific Conference
-5 NZ teams
-4 Aussie teams

teams play home/away v teams in their own conference plus a couple of inter-conference games. Conference champions play each other in the final
>>
Again:
NZ Conference - 5 NZ teams
AUS Conference - 4 Oz + Bumwolves
RSA Conference - 4 Saffa + Jags

Easy. Give me the job, I'll fucking fix everything.

IMO what needs to happen is we go back to super 15 (5xSA, 5xAUS, 5xNZ). Next, sign a new contract with fox so that the super rugby is on free-to-air channel(s).
Create a new 2nd tier super rugby comp with however many teams and then do relegations so that the bottom team in super 15 swap with the top team in the 2nd tier comp.
>>
>>74668384
No way are rebels going. They are privately owned by the Imperium Group so they are basically the second wealthiest team and just a way for dudes to write off going to the rugby as "checking on their investments" and claiming it as a tax write off.

England will be first and Italy last, innit.
>>
>>74668778
SA has too many teams. I don't think it can sustain them all. Not sure about Australia.

Personally I would go with 4 conferences each with 4 teams, 5/5/4 or 6/4/4 with 1 Argentina team and 1 Japan team.
