the difference is that in 3-1 the comeback was orchestrated by the greatest basketball player of his generation
in 18-1 the comeback (featuring the most memorable play in modern NFL history) was orchestrated by Eli fucking Manning, a guy who only got into the league because his brother is a great player and is best known for his retard-like facial expressions on the field

Americans really focus on the concept "you're only as good as your last game" so losses are treated the ultimate EXPOSED. The 18-1 pats were most likely the greatest single season side of all time, but you can never even suggest that in a discussion because they'll just scream "CHOKERS LOL".

It's hard to make a metaphorical comparison between 18-1 and what its equal in football would be because of the context in which they lost.
It would sort of be like if Argentina went undefeated throughout all of the conmebol wc qualifiers, winning each game 5-0. Then went through their wc groups matches undefeated. And dominating their quarters and semis. Each match Messi is scoring a hat trick.
