It is impossible to tell even in slow-motion if Mascherano actually made contact on Di Maria from behind. This was an impossible call in real-time and the ref cannot be faulted for it.

If you're asking what the defender was thinking: well, clearly, he knew that Neymar had a big advantage on him. This led to him trying to do too much to get back and ended up slipping - just like our old friend, Slippy G.

Obstruction of a goal scoring opportunity is still obstruction even by accident so no IDK. It's a straight penalty. No card to Meunier even if it was a foul. An Accident is an accident and the penalty is harsh enough. Penalty is just tough shit application of the games laws (The ref who sent off Nani a few years back was being a cunt, though). Could have Yellowed Neymar for dangerous play though as he saw the slip and had plenty of room to stop but still went in and kneed Meunier in the back of the head before flopping over.
