Yeah it's cool that we're potentially growing the sport around the world, but MLB's aim is to turn entire countries into farm systems for MLB, like the Dominican Republic.

I'd love to see actual competitive baseball leagues grow around the world and see the game develop like soccer with lots of international competition, but as long as a corporate national league like MLB controls all of the international development, all global baseball is just going to be cultivated to feed MLB.

I can understand the talent drain that MlB has the Japanese league. There was a whole narritive a couple of years ago about how there aren't enough African Americans in the major leagues. It's not that the MLB is alienating African American talent. It's that the collective talent pool of Japan, Cuba, Venezuela, Dominican Republic ect....is massive and superior to any American inner city baseball system.

One problem I have with the franchise structure of US sports is that in many ways it hampers the international growth of the game. For instance, potential lack of interest aside, there will never be a Canadian baseball league because MLB has a Canadian team. There's talk in the NBA of putting a team in Mexico City, which would basically preclude a Mexican pro basketball league from ever being a thing. I don't really like the transnational nature of US sports leagues which can just open a franchise in any country around the world and essentially monopolize a sport in that country.

I agree. Talent isn't the issue, it's the fact that for black folks who are widely impoverished sports is one real avenue for "making it" in America. Two of our sports leagues offer huge checks right out of college. Baseball doesn't. So most top tier black athletes tend to gravitate toward the sports which will pay them upfront and get them out of poverty.

That and football/basketball scholarships are way the hell more freely available and well funded than baseball scholarships, so even if the NFL or NBA isn't their final goal, lots of black kids get pushed into basketball or football by their parents as a way to get an expensive college education.
