Small teams in first division here pay 1k a month to pro players, and by small teams I mean all of them except 5, sometimes they practice with old balls and old stuff in general. Youth divisions are the same for every team, Peñarol and Nacional are better nowadays but not by much either.

It's really only been since the USA hosted the World Cup in the 1990s, coupled with the rise of the internet and social media, that Americans were even aware that soccer existed and that people cared about it.
