2010 was truly a great year.

I remember the week before the finale everyone was talking about if Vettel would move out the way for Webber to help him win the championship. It seems like everyone has forgotten how Vettel wasn't even the underdog that race, he was even below that. And yet he proved the world that he had learned from Canada that year and that he, as opposed to Webber and Alonso that race, could keep his cool when the stakes were the highest.

Just finished watching it.

Hosts:
Le Blanc: Still bad a lot of the time, but occasional flashes of being decent. His personality often doesn't work - too reserved, feels a bit fake, which is probably him falling back on his acting. At least he's willing to be the butt of jokes.
Harris: Fantastic. Great reviews, way too competitive in challenges (in a good way), toppest tier bantz.
Rory: Just seems happy to be on Top Gear, which in a massive contrast to CHM on TGT, so it helps the show a lot.

Content:
Celebrity bit still shit, although its better than the abomination celebrity segment format they had last season. "Reasonable fast car" ruins the joke, but once again, better than that rallycross shit from last year.
Harris hypercar review was good as always.
Challenge was entertaining. Didn't seem overly scripted (although it obviously was). Lots of genuine reactions. The way they edited the quarry race was brilliant.

All in all, I enjoyed it better than most of TGT, even though I don't want to like it as much.

>>
>>74529387

Trying to think how he could have avoided death in this scenario

I was thinking "maybe he could just slide down the car to duck his head". But obviously you can't with the safety harness, you are literally strapped in place, with the crotch strap stopping you from moving down the car.

And he can't really tilt his head to either side either, because there's only an inch or two of room either side between his helmet and the foam protection thing.
>>

I thought maybe try and spin the car so it cops a bit more of the force and on a lesser angle, rather than his head. but that could also kill the marshals maybe.

Alonso already said that they could have easily done a 1.19 in the tests, the only problem is that Mercedes could have done a 1.17.

I'm pretty sure Merc is going to annihilate yet again. Ferrari hype is going to come crashing down when Mercedes do their usual thing and actually turn up the engines and magically find a second

They don't actually. Merc has by far the biggest team and the highest budget. I think then it's Ferrari, McLaren, RBR, Williams and Renault.

Unless you have some "one weird trick" thing on your car, what's the point of sandbagging in testing? It's not like FIA can change regulations with such short notice, or for anyone to copy your team's design

Wouldn't it be just much more intimidating to show up to testing, immediately set astounding lap times, or even just 1 full flat out lap to get you to the top of the charts by a 2 second margin, then do long run pace whilst everyone else spills their spaghetti trying to understand what happened

They have like 1000 different managers who do various different things, fuckloads of people fired and hired, whole structure is a mess, chassis development isn't nearly as good as they seem to think it is, Honda autisming all over the place and their working relationship resembles that of a desperate Finnish man bringing back a Thai mail order bride and realizing that when 3 years later she still doesn't speak the same language as you and has not adjusted to the culture at all, they might have made a mistake, but its too late to admit it now. >>
>>74530896

Well you listed most of the actual good drivers.

Aside from only a couple of drivers, basically all of them are good enough to win a title in a Brawn situation where they have a car like that.

Up and coming talent that is IMO not rated as highly as they deserve includes Ocon and Vandoorne. Especially Vandoorne though, if McLaren doesn't kill his career by giving him shitboxes will easily be a champion one day. This sounds a bit over-reaching but I wouldn't be that surprised if Vandoorne beat Alonso in points this season (bearing in mind that Alonso isn't exactly on the same peak level as he was in e.g. 2005-2007 or 2010-2012 etc)

Also very excited to see how Bottas does in a real good car.

desu most of the non-champion drivers could pull off a WDC, but it depends on who their teammate is. for example if rosberg wasn't up against lewlew he would easily have won 2014 and 15, too.

against an equal status (and talent) driver the only guy who I'm sure can win a WDC is stoffel.

Stoffel is pretty good and could be a prospect for the future

Tricky Ricky is pretty amazing in my opinion, I re-watched his pole lap from Monaco '16 yesterday, fucking awesome stuff. Of course he's currently having to compete with AMX for top billing status in his team

They're probably the two worth mentioning the most

Everybody else is mediocre

Perez and Grosjean (yes you might find that controversial but I personally like him) are two drivers that I think could do well if given the right car, but Perez obviously has already had his chance in a McLaren, and Grosjean is probably too old at this point, so I don't think either will ever get much further than they are now

Oh also Bottas is pretty good, but I don't know if he has the drive, the steely-eyed determination, to get a WDC. He's a bit too meek. A bit like Barrichello.

How do we save F1's viewing figures, family members?

>Formula One viewing figures drop by 5.1m in Britain due to Lewis Hamilton championship failure
>Formula One’s television audience in Britain crashed by 5.1m viewers last year, driven by Lewis Hamilton failing to win a fourth championship and coverage switching from the BBC to Channel 4.

>Hamilton’s Mercedes team mate Nico Rosberg won the first four races and ended up with a total of nine victories in 2016. Although Hamilton won one more than that he lost the championship at the season-ender in Abu Dhabi to Rosberg who announced that he was retiring just five days later.

>Even though the title battle went down to the wire, and the number of races hit a record 21, F1’s Global Media Report reveals that the number of viewers in Britain reversed to a 12-year low of 21.8m.

>The Media Report says “there are several factors to take into account, one being the change in broadcaster the other potentially being the dip in fortune of Lewis Hamilton.”

>It highlights F1’s struggle to appeal in Britain where its home Grand Prix is under threat after spectator numbers fell by 1,000 to 139,000 last year.

>The drop in Britain comprised half of F1’s total fall of 10m viewers in 2016. The worldwide audience dropped to 390m marking the sixth straight year that the number of F1 viewers has declined. It has lost a total of 137m since 2010 driven by a move to Pay TV. Coverage is split between free-to-air and Pay TV in major markets such as Germany, Italy and Britain where Channel 4 only gets the live rights to 10 races whilst Sky Sports screens every session live.
>>
>>74531706

Low ratings are due to the coverage being increasingly pay-walled.

Anything else is just a bullshit excuse.

I think it has to go back to terrestrial TV channels. It can't compete with football which also occupies a whole weekend. It's the only way it can expand beyond it's niche.

Being honest, after Senna died people here kept wanting a "new Senna". That's why everytime a Brazilian driver crashes, breaks or anything, no matter how small it is, his carreer is ruined in Brazil forever. Basically the so called "weekend F1 fans" fuck everything up.

For example, Barrichello have quite a big fanbase outside Brazil, but here we know how everyone just make him a joke.
>>
>>74535047
>people here kept wanting a "new Senna". That's why everytime a Brazilian driver crashes, breaks or anything, no matter how small it is, his carreer is ruined in Brazil forever.

Pretty funny when you consider how frequently Senna crashed.

>>
>>74534989

>>

>>
>>74535047
desu after senna died there hasn't been an actually top tier hue driver. Massa and Rubens were close but Massa was lost forever in Hungary and Rubinho went the beta way.

Other than them there have been:

Pedro Diniz - shitty pay driver
Ricardo Rosset - shitty pay driver
Enrique Bernoldi - shitty pay driver
Lucas di'Grassi - shitty pay driver
Bruno Senna - shitty pay driver
Felipe Nasr - could have been decent
Cristiano da Matta - could have been decent

Now some of these drivers have decent careers on other categories. Also Massa is widely hated here as well, specially after '08. If a BR goes to F1, he's fucked if he at least not fighting for WDC.

Ironically there is J.P Oliveira on Super GT who always fights for championship and won a championship on Japanese Super Formula; and yet nobody here gives a fuck or knows him at all.
>>
>>74535080
>Cristiano da Matta - could have been decent

da Matta was a decent enough driver, but his talent shown in ChampCar (which effectively earned him his F1 drive) was massively inflated because CART didn't included driver weight in the car total at the time, and being only 59kg gave him a huge advantage.
>>
>>74535080

Their car was always poor in dirty air, they had the same issue in the first half of the year. Look at some of Hamilton's comeback drives and you can see that even he, as one of the great overtakers of formula 1, was getting stuck behind cars that he was much quicker than.

In Abu Dhabi Hamilton was over 8 tenths ahead of the lead Red Bull in qualifying and then look how much Hamilton was having to back Rosberg up to try and allow the others to close on him. Then consider just how much resource Mercedes had to have diverted into the 2017 car in order to launch with a car as refined and reliable as that. Their development rate is phenomenal.

>Veteran drivers Lewis Hamilton and Felipe Massa have both said the 18-year-old Stroll will need time to settle in. 'I feel for him in the sense that it's the toughest year to come into Formula 1, being in the fastest cars and the most physical cars,' Hamilton said. 'You can't just jump in and drive from no experience at all to being consistent and not spin. That's to be expected."

Then why did Gio do just that? Jump in and deliver, with even much less experience than Stroll with an F1 car.

Stroll? Prema meme seat Formula 3 win with the help of a his dads wallet and while also paying millions to drive Williams 2014 F1 car, testing in Barca was Gio's first time in an F1 car ever.

http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/128391/horner-wants-shark-fins-axed-before-australia

Red Bull boss Christian Horner wants Formula 1 teams to discuss ditching shark fins, and hopes that can happen before the start of the season.

The introduction of shark fins has not gone down well with fans, and even F1's new top sporting man Ross Brawn is eager for something to be done to get rid of them.

Horner, who revealed teams warned the FIA about the loophole, hopes there is still time to get something done before the season starts in Australia at the end of the month.

"The only disappointment for me is that it would have been nice to get rid of these shark fins and moustache-like wings. But other than that I think the cars look great"

"Maybe there's still time to address that, because it's a shame it detracts slightly from the aesthetics of all the cars, and everybody would be affected in the same way."

Thoughts /f1/? I think alot of cars would look better without the fin, such as Foreskin India and the Renault.

No. Someone on reddit photoshopped the fins of every car away and they look way too thin in the back before the rear wing, it would look even more weird because of the length of the cars.
