And that D8 brings to an end one of the finest sessions of darts seen in quite a long time - there was no Michael van Gerwen either - as all four corners of the UK got through to the semi finals.

England's semifinalist is Alan Norris, who bested Kim Huybrechts in a nip-and-tuck fixture. Chuck went 2-0 up but got pulled back to 2-2 by Chipmunk, only to smack in a 160 to take leg 5. There wasn't more than a leg between them until the 12th when Norris went out on a botched 25. Hurricane came back from a 8-6 Norris lead to win three straight legs, but missed a D16 for a 140 to win as Chuck tied it up and then missed the bull as the Lakeside runner-up went out in 14 to win.

Cymru cunt Gerwyn Price made his first PDC semifinal after a monumental choke from Stoke's Ian White. A match of just three breaks saw Iceman hit the first in the fifth leg on D5 but Diamond was still there, averaging around 105. A Price 105 to go 7-5 up was countered by a White 121 and then the crucial break back to go 7-7. When it went to 8-8, though, Diamond cracked; numerous pulls left and right and then the ultimate choke: down into D15 when wanting D10 as Iceman smashed in a huge 160 to win.

Norn Iron's Daryl Gurney was on the ropes against Australia's Simon Whitlock early doors - a Wizard 161 the highlight - but when it went 7-4 to the Ausie, Superchin unleashed his power and hit 5 straight legs. Although Wizard got it to a last leg decider, his scoring vanished after 7-4 and it was a very poor end to a great few months for him.

Finally, "Scotsman" Peter Wright and Raymond van Barneveld had an absolute classic with 110 playing 108 in the averages; 20 180s, a Wright 156 to go 6-4 ahead, RVB in it all along until a power cut in the middle of leg 14 stunned them both and despite winning the 15th leg, Ray didn't win another leg to guarantee a new major winner.

And so I write something I never thought I would ever write: Peter Wright has won a major. It might not be the most valuable major prize wise, but the UK Open is still a significant trophy. It also pushes the "Best player to never win a major" honour onto Dave Chisnall.

From the moment Wright went 3-0 up with a 104 checkout, the trophy was his and just kept extending his lead when he could. Gerwyn Price, probably on account of it being his first major final, blew numerous early chances to close that gap and although he took advantage when Clownman missed darts for 9-3 and 9-4, reducing it to 6-8, he was unable to win another leg from that point.

This year's edition will always be overshadowed by the absence of the World #1 Michael van Gerwen, withdrawing on the morning of the event with his back trouble and has taken a lot of shine off Wright's win. However, it's not as if Wright won this as a rank outsider who fluked every match: he was the #1 seed for it and performed at what is now his regular 100+ average for its entirety, taking out two fellow PL players in Chizzy and Raymond van Barneveld along the way. It's just disappointing the final was against a player far weaker than him that was basically finished early.
