Very good thread.

I have been reading stuff here and it kind of surprises me. Yeah I know they have been shit past few years but this year is kind of different.

Last year they improved greatly YoY from 2015 to 2016.After summer break ALO finished P7 4 or 5 times plus a P5 in USA. Jenson Had a P8 or something and all this was with a handicapped Honda PU limited by token system.

This year there is no token system. Honda can bring a different version of PU for every single race if they need to improve on something .

Their car is improving. They were clear 4th fastest on a few tracks last year after summer break despite being 80-100bhp down. Hungary,Singapore,S2/S3 of Spa and maybe Germany comes to mind.

They have huge resources(Bahraini owners and so on) and with Honda pouring in $$$ too.

Good drivers.

Not saying that they gonna be in top 3 but writing them off so early by saying they gonna go backwards seems like jumping on to conclusions too early to me.

You could make an argument for 1966, when the engines doubled in size from 1.5L to 3L. The Jim Clark-Lotus combination should have been the strongest on the grid, but Climax's (Lotus' engine supplier for some years) 3L engine failed to materialize, so they had to look elsewhere.

They went to BRM, who also had a relatively recent championship under their belt, but in an effort to place peak power over everything else, BRM made an engine that was overcomplicated, hard to drive, had the center of gravity too high, and was unreliable, effectively taking both teams out of the title hunt.

Ferrari might have been in with a shout, but John Surtees, far and away their best driver, quit the team after being pulled from the Le Mans entry at the last minute. Honda, meanwhile, was still struggling to build a good chassis. Cooper, another team that had Climax engines in the past, switched to Maserati for 1966, but Cooper was already on a downward trajectory by this point.

There were a couple new teams, Dan Gurney's All American Racers and Bruce McLaren's team, but they were still establishing themselves at this point.

Thus, the title ended up being won by Jack Brabham in a car of the same name, which used a modified Oldsmobile Jetfire V8 as its engine. While not taking full advantage of the regulations, the engine was good enough and very reliable. Denny Hulme would actually win the championship with this car in 1967, as Lotus got the new Cosworth DFV engine which made them devastatingly quick but would need some more time to find its reliability.

Alonso knows that due to an entire decade of failure he's going to be remembered as the Mansell of this era, while Hamilton and Vettel will be remembered as the Prost and Senna.

Alonso also knows that the only way he can escape this timeline, and be a """""legend""""", is to do a Senna and kill himself, so people will claim he was much better than he actually was.

Don't be surprised if you see him taking dangerous risks, and getting involved in huge crashes this year, it's all part of his plan.

They're not the elders, Kimi, Felipe and Fernando are the elders. Loowis and spaghetti boy aren't quite there yet. Once Kimi goes and Felipe actually retires Fernando will have won his 2 championships before anyone else on the grid had even had their first race in F1.

Given 9 months gestation and 3 months recuperation, we'll need twenty years to populate a grid, by which time the eldest ones will be waning.

https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/hamilton-no-games-makes-bottas-best-f1-teammate-879755/

>Lewis Hamilton says the relationship he has with Valtteri Bottas is already his best in Formula 1, because there “are no games” with Mercedes’ new signing.

>Bottas has joined Hamilton at the title-winning team for 2017 after the shock retirement of last year’s world champion Nico Rosberg.

>Hamilton and Rosberg spent four years as teammates at Mercedes, with the last three of those spent engaged in a private duel for the world title.

>The two drivers were close during their karting years and time in junior single-seaters, but a number of on-track clashes and the pressure of the title race meant that relationship deteriorated.

>Speaking to the official F1 website about Bottas, Hamilton said: “What I so far like about working with Valtteri is that it is all to do with the track - what we do on the circuit - and not outside.

>“There are no games - there is complete transparency. I like that.

>“I feel we already have a better working relationship than I ever had with any teammate I had before.

>“He wants to do the best thing that he can in his first year with the team - and with me being here for quite a while now, I want to deliver and make sure that I give as much information so that he will learn.

>“And we do our talking on the track.”

It's safe to say that Finland undoubtedly statistically produces the best racing drivers per capita right?

5.5 million people, Finn on the grid almost every year. Our worst driver to have driven in F1 is either Mika Salo or Heikki Kovalainen and both of them got selected by big teams and both won a race (almost, but you know what I mean). 3.5 WDC's, two Finns currently on the grid in what are likely to be the two best teams.

Why are Finns so good bros?

The best team in the series went through a complex and expensive process just to secure him as their driver for 2017 despite the fact that they could get any driver on the grid to drive for them practically for free. Plus there's probably like 100 drivers with a superlicense that would pay money for that seat.

I guess they really believe in him, or having Toto Wolff as your manager is the best fucking move anyone has ever made in their careers.

I actually am still a bit amazed that Merc chose him because the process really wasn't that simple and Williams certainly didn't make it cheap or easy for anybody involved. Plus Williams is now getting a seasons worth of free engines and got Mercedes to pay Massas entire salary, so they basically have free engines and 2 drivers they don't have to pay a salary for.

>get pole because your car is optimized to be good in quali whilst your teammate is more focused on race setup (or is just shit when it wasn't Prost)
>choke like half of your poles for whatever reason and have completely unremarkable races unless it rains because you are the only guy autistic enough to have spent like 2 years driving in the rain just to get better at it
>never perform a memorable overtake or stand out move
>googling "Senna overtake" only results in clips of him being overtaken

Nico Rosberg is truly one of the most underrated F1 drivers. Certainly not a "bad" champion like many have been saying. Of course he isn't a perfect driver and has some blatant weaknesses but to say he is somehow not deserving of a title is ridiculous. Hill lucked into one and worked hard to achieve his, Button literally just happened to be in the right place at the right time and therefore became world champion. Rosberg was extremely loyal to everyone, including teams, engineers etc (same race engineer for entire career), he spent most of his career at Merc building it up from year one, Hamilton joined once he realized McLaren was failing.

People never forget to mention that even if you don't like Hamilton as a person, he is a "hell of a racer" and one of the best on the grid, if not the best. Then the same people nonchalantly disregard Rosberg's achievement against this same driver.

Malaysia engine failure or not, a Ham-Ros championship battle really should never be in such a close state that one retirement (in a race in which Rosberg scored 15 points instead of 25) for Hamilton means he loses the championship. The sheer fact that Rosberg never really got truly annihilated by Hamilton as teammates says a lot. The fact that he didn't go full Webber, or full Barrichello, especially after losing the title not once, but twice in a row is truly amazing. How many people have not succumbed to the beta 2nd driver role even after 1 title defeat against your teammate?

I also wouldn't consider Prost a bad wet weather driver. Senna was just exceptional at it. Also in Monaco Prost wasn't pushing in the rain because he probably didn't want to risk a DNF. And the Senna movie portrays the race being stopped as somehow a bad call just to let Prost win. Race would have been red flagged regardless of what Prost was thinking, got nothing to do with Senna.

Wasn't it Senna who put his McLaren into the wall in Monaco because he was pushing like 1 second a lap faster than what was required?

Oh yeah, neither. I probably should have clarified my method. E.g. waking up and starting to drink is going to result in bad things, basically drinking and not attempting to fix your hangover at all is going to result in horrible things eventually. I don't know how people do this 24/7 sort of drinking, its the sort of shit that literally causes psychosis and makes stopping drinking for these people a legitimately possible lethal experience.

What I do is basically endure the bulk of the hangover, do my best to combat it like I would any other time (plenty of water, actual food etc) and then eventually introduce casual beers into the mix around 4-5 pm and slowly work my way up to being nice and drunk by the end of the night. Certainly was a lot more sustainable when I was like 20 years old though and when I was in uni (ie get drunk like 4-5 days a week no problem) and didn't work full time.

Funnily enough I have so far managed to keep drinking completely in control in the sense that it has not massively affected any other aspect of my life and unironically don't understand people who drink away all their money and cannot stop drinking. Guy I knew drank every cent he had every month, pawned everything he had and eventually ended up in prison for cracking someone's skull when he was drunk

You say drivers can't win in bad cars yet this forum notoriously wants people to believe that Alonso was driving a backmarker at Ferrari but still managed two championship runs in 2010 and 2012.

The truth is that McLaren and Ferrari both had peaks and troths where performance would flip flop between them. Some days one team could turn up and be super competitive against Red Bull while the other wasnt and vice versa.

2009 was a bad car for a period of time, that's a fact. What I don't like is that if Alonso was driving that car you can guarantee that quite a few people in here would try to argue that it was him who turned it into a race winner and it had nothing to do with the team. When Hamilton does it people like you make every excuse in the book to give him zero credit for McLarens success in the second half of the year.

Truth is that Hamilton was a beast in the junior formulas and his results were so impressive that Ron Dennis believed in his ability enough to the point that he was willing to throw the rookie right in at the deep end against the reigning 2xWDC and he beat him. How many other rookies could do what Hamilton did? Only the very best of course and you need to show some respect. Nobody put a gun to Dennis' head and forced him to sign Hamilton. He had to prove himself over 10+ years which is more than enough time for someone to completely fuck up the opportunity and get shitcanned from the team. Obviously Hamilton proved his worth and the rest is history though if you want all the facts he did actually lose McLaren sponsorship in 2004 and then got rejected by Williams because BMW didn't want to fund his career so he found himself in the position where his future wasn't secured but he managed to turn it all around and win back McLaren sponsorship by winning the Bahrain SuperPrix. He earned that seat in 2007 and became a major player in formula 1 straight away scoring the most points on the grid over his first two years.
>>
>>74519403
>>74519435
Seems like people in here love to gobble it up and join the degenerate aussie in his circlejerk every time
>>
>>74519463

Also, credit needs to be given to Hamilton for his career choices compared to others. Toto Wolff has basically came out recently and admitted that Alonso's actions in 2007 have had an impact on Mercedes decision whether to sign him. Wolff said that McLaren and Mercedes lost a lot because of Alonso and that he has ruined a lot of relationships along the way. Has Hamilton done that? No. Hamilton enjoyed a very successful career at McLaren and then listened to Brawns vision for Mercedes where he clearly understood the potential of the team and moved at the exact correct time. Now he is one of the sports most successful drivers.
Even at Mercedes Hamilton has managed to keep a strong relationship with the team instead of getting himself thrown out like some other drivers might have done (though in all honesty Hamilton has had his downs as well as ups with the team but has managed to come through it). Now he is in all probability going to have another championship run.
Instead of looking at everything negatively there is a great argument to say that Hamilton has achieved what he has achieved and been in the cars he's been in through a combination of his ability and making the right moves behind the scenes. Perhaps some other drivers could learn a thing or two from him? Clearly he's doing something right.

Bottas is more like Rosberg, even pushed a bit further. Quiet secluded family man that doesn't like seeking put the media spotlight. Doesn't party doesn't do the Lewlew things reddit loves.
Of course they are going to hate him. I hope he quietly beats Lewlew, doesn't cause any controversy.

It's literally because reddit watches F1 with driver personalities in mind. It's like "Nando" is their old friend or Kimi is that crazy guy everyone knows or whatever. They basically think they're like friends with the drivers or something, or at the very least apply the driver's media personality into everything they do.

The "problem" with Bottas is that he doesn't really give off much of a personality at all to the media. Therefore he isn't exciting and not meme worthy. I highly doubt he is really that much of an assburger. People seem to forget that the only time most of us see drivers is when they're in front of cameras. The presence of cameras changes the personality of a person no matter how used they are to them. Of course you don't want to show your less than perfect sides to a camera and you think about what you say more. Would you act and talk like you act with your good friends if there was a camera pointed at you and you knew that footage would get seen by millions of people? Probably not.

Hamilton's persona in front of cameras nowadays is basically just him feeding his own ego (look at the difference between 2007 and 2017 Hamilton). It's not real, or it might be but it's not his actual natural personality but reddit eats that shit up for whatever reason. Lets not forget that Rosberg has no personality therefore he was disliked. Kimi has no personality at all by design and is basically just a dick yet people interpret it as him being funny even though he just seems uninterested and bored.

Of course if Bottas does well he will soon enough have praising nick names/invented personality traits in the same vein as "iceman" or "the professor" etc and if he does shit then he is simply just not on the level of god tier blessed hamilton

Yea I don't get the reason for keeping or even including Liam in the band in the first place. Dude seems like an all around terrible person with a particularly annoying singing voice. Money and fame made him seemingly totally unbearable which would be "ok" if he was the mastermind behind the band but in reality he does fuck all aside from sing melodies he probably didn't write himself. It's not like Noel is an insecure person or incapable of being a front man, plus he has the same voice as Liam except just nicer.

Liam's stage presence is him standing there looking like he is about to walk off any minute. Noel is also considerably funnier, quintessential Brit humor

First two albums Liam probably had the better sound, but obviously by about 1998 Liam's voice was shot, also having the two voices together made them a great sound combination.

Liam really does nail the entirety of Definitely Maybe though, and still has good tracks on Morning Glory and Be Here Now. Really dropped off in comparison to Noel though after that whom has probably gotten better since.

I actually liked Hamilton back then. Look at pic related. You don't see any earings, any bling bling, any retarded sunglasses, any oversized clothes, any negro snapback, any vulgar haircuts.

You just see a humble young man that was actually pretty damn fast and had a lot to learn yet. For once in 20 years, Ron Dennis had done something right and you can see how much his influence was when HAM left McLaren.

Schumi's domination really wasn't as set in stone as the Merc domination has been. For the past 3 years there's been like 2 races where Mercedes got beaten on actual pace. Everything else has been a strategic fuck up or a mechanical problem. Singapore 2015 Ferrari was just faster, Monaco 2016 Red Bull was just faster and Hamilton managed to win that anyway. 2015 Malaysia was a strategic fuck up and 2015 Hungary was just a clusterfuck of a race. All RB wins were enabled by Merc DNF's. Schumi only really had that sort of bulletproof guaranteed win level of cars in 2004 and maybe another season but I have forgotten most of those years lol

Plus Schumi you know got the right people involved and revitalized Ferrari who hadn't won a WDC since Schecter in 1980 or whatever so it is kind of a more deserved achievement and domination, whereas Hamilton just joined the team he figured would be the best in the next regulation change.

Häkkinen recently had twin boys with his current "totally not a stripper" wife. So there's still hope. Gimi is planting his ice seed hard nowadays as well plus there is already le mini icelad who is "scarily interested in cars" so in a few decades we might actually see a Robin ACE Räikkönen vs the Häkkinen twins rivalry which would just be turbo autism overload

At least Ricky got the Malaysia win. Could have been a bit devastating otherwise.

Btw funny how pre Hamilton DNF Ricciardo was actively racing against Verstappen who was on a different strategy (and would have finished ahead of Ricciardo in a non-eventful race and even had pace to potentially cause Merc to turn up their engines for once) but no one seems to mind haha. I'm not a Verstappen fanboy but its funny that Ricciardo was essentially costing Verstappen time by not letting him past even though they had two completely different strategies to run. Would have caused a bit of a shitstorm had it been some different teammates. (also that exact battle with the exact same lines was done with Verstappen and Bottas in 2015 but I guess its cooler when its 2 Red Bulls going side by side)
>>
>>74520443
Schumi's domination was more like Vettel's domination. You knew in the end they would win, but at least they had a few championship rivals a couple of times. I mean, Hakkinen could have won 2000 and Montoya-Raikkonen could have won 2003. Webber, Alonso and Hamilton were up there too in 2010 and Alonso again in 2012.

Lol yea, I mean I knew it was Schecter but I guess I was off by a year. I generally can't be fucked fact-cheking a 4chan post and I'm not too big on remembering specific "data".

Also regarding Vettel's 4 WDC streak, it seems like people retrospectively think it was total domination even though it clearly wasn't. I mean he had it in the bag 2011 and 2013, helped massively by the meme that was Webber and his ability to get decent starts or be a decent racing driver. I wonder how many people thought Vettel would end up winning 2010 before the final Abu Dhabi weekend. Fucking everything aligned perfectly to enable him to get that title. He certainly didn't have it easy in 2012 either. I guess one would argue that a better driver would have dominated a lot more in that car, which is a fair point but its not like Vettel cruised to every single one of those WDCs like it was his destiny or something

I think the reliability improvements go until 100% is reached but performance scores are capped for each part, so I rotate parts through until they're all at the same percentage reliability-wise then start again to increase etc. until they're all pretty stronk.

haven't played enough for a solid tip on whether HQ upgrades are worth it but if you haven't made it to the new car (end of season) yet from what I've seen so far new chassis are the fastest way to un-JUST yourself. the game ('chairman') gives you a lump sum of currency that you've saved over the season for next year's car so I would recommend saving up extra and getting good suppliers to improve the base stats. my first season I would connive my way into the points pretty regularly but tire deg was so nerfed on the chassis that every race I'd need an extra stop. and there's no way to improve the chassis base stats (tire deg, warmup, fuel efficiency etc.) mid-season so that's a critical goal.
