I have a friend who plays for Guilford in D-III, and I like Lenior Rhyne because, immediately after beating Michigan in '07, our Head Coach Jerry Moore kept talking about how we had a tough game against them (a D-II team) the next week.

Are you otherwise in favor of football expansion for the AAC? I saw a UConn blog advocating for it and the top four schools they listed were Boise, BYU, Army and Air Force. After that, they proposed Georgetown and Villanova moving up to FBS instead. How would you feel about the latter?

They could certainly support football, they'd just need to start at the Division II level and work their way up. UMass went from A D-II school to an FBS transitional in just over 20 years.

Just depends on the school and the cash. Georgia State played their first ever football game in 2010, three years later they joined the Sun Belt and were playing in the FBS. I can't say I know anything about Wichita State's financial situation, but rapid advancement through the divisions isn't impossible.

This seems like the least likely stumbling block to any move those schools might make, to be honest. Boise doesn't care about whichever one of their local rivals isn't dropping down a division. Their long-term viability from a conference commissioner's standpoint is another matter. Air Force would potentially end up in the AAC along with Navy and Army, I'd think the AAC would be a definite "yes" from them, but I have no idea whether the AAC would want them or not.

Could be true, again I'm not intimately familiar with expansion talks for these conferences. They may have a good thing going as an Independent right now but long-term there's more money to be made by joining the right conference.

This, too, depends on the school. There is plenty of potential in names like Georgetown and Villanova and fans may turn their noses up but the conferences don't operate on that kind of tier system, they'll pursue whatever outcome is richest.

The reality is nobody wants UConn, and even if by some miracle another conference took their basketball, (1) AAC would not want to keep UConn football if they school left in other sports, and (2) They're not hacking it as an independent. Oh, and also (3) too goddamn far away to even be considered by the Big 12.

Memphis is interesting though, I've always been curious where they might end up once expansion has finally settled in long-term. Back before the ACC and SEC expanded there were talks about the possibilities of bringing them to one of those two. Mostly the ACC, if I remember correctly.

The problem isn't with the schools. it's with the numbers. If they want to be a true national, coast-to-coast conference then they need to commit to it, and that requires more than five vaguely-close schools in a conference with 18 of them. It doesn't seem practical to have ~3/4 of a conference on one side of the country, mingled into divisions with schools on the other coast.

I dunno how much of that is making sense. Basically I just mean that I like the idea of adding those schools if they're going to commit to a true east/west split.

Boise State is still a pipeline for top talent coaches on the west coast. Their old coach just made a run for the Natty at Washington.

They're still relevant, and their name has some cache, even if the program has lost a little luster. They will always be a way station to better things, but so is the rest of the AAC.
