Rotaries were already being phased out of the WSC along with turbos and anything else fun when the 787B politicked its way into relevance. 1992 WSC only had like 10 cars then died so old style cars (read: rotaries) were still eligible at Le Mans through 1994. Mazda chose to race their 3.5L car because it was shitloads faster.
