Was he ever really a great manager? Or was it just that he had Henry, Vieira etc in their prime?
>>
1st for wonga out
>>
he was a great manager and revolutionized english football.

even in the post stadium years paying off the debts he still done a pretty good job, steering the club into the top 4 every year and having a couple of good runs in the CL. he was the best choice of manager in that period with next to fuck all to spend.

he should have gone in summer 2014.
>>

>>
He is soccer's Coach Pop. Arsenal fans don't deserve him; can't wait until Arsenal becomes a Stoke-calibre team once he leaves.
>>
>>74340132
This

Look at the Arsenal squad.

It's basiccally Swansea / West Ham tier

Amazing wonga is 2nd in EPL compared to rival teams
>>
He revolutionised football in England when it came to training and diet (things that are now considered standard practice for pretty much every PL team), he also helped Henry develop into the player that absolutely dominated the league. It's also worth mentioning that he did well to finish in the top four despite having to be incredibly careful with his finances because of the stadium debt.

Having said that, I can't honestly see him taking the club further. And back then there were only really 2 or 3 clubs that had a shot at winning the league (usually Arsenal, United and someone else). Now there are five other clubs, which is easily enough to potentially push Arsenal out of the top 4. And ever since a few years ago, Arsenal hasn't needed to be too strict with their money any more. He should have really left after he won the FA Cup in 2014, it would have let him leave on a high note.

Last season was the proof that he's done. All the other major clubs had some issues that caused them to collapse, yet Arsenal still failed to win the league and Leicester fucking City won it. It shows that the reason Arsenal doesn't win the PL is a mental one, not a financial one. While Wenger stays at the club, the team will continue to have the same mentality that will never win them a PL or CL.

>He is soccer's Coach Pop
In terms of consistency, yeah I guess so. In any other term he's nowhere near coach Pop. It's been years since Wenger managed to produce a star player (yeah I don't count Ozil nor Alexis as one) and the most recent ones he let leave to pretty much rival clubs (Fabregas to Barca and van Persie to fuckin Man united!?!). Not to mention authority, fuckin Gerard Houllier seemed to be more of an authority fugure then Wenger
>>
He's still a good manager but there's a big gap between Arsenal/Liverpool/Tottenham and Chelsea/City/United. I mean Liverpool has never won the PL, Tottenham has never won the PL and the last time Arsenal won the PL was 15 years ago. I don't understand how every year people think any of these teams are favorites to win the league, they can obviously win it but everything has to go their way, kind of like Leicester last season.

>>74340239
>He's still a good manager
>>
>>74340021

Honestly? He hasn't had a bad season since arriving at the club.

He was fantastic in the early years, then kept the club at a high level when they lost the ability to spend large sums of money because of the new stadium. I would include the trophyless spell in Wenger's 'prime' years as he did a stellar job throughout that period.

He hasn't actually done badly these last few seasons either - I could see Arsenal getting another Top 4 finish and a cup final this season too - but they haven't really gone up a level in the way that they should have done when they regained the resources to be competitive at the top.

Last season in particular has to stand out as a missed opportunity and disappointment as it was the one season when every other big club in England faltered badly.

I don't think Arsenal should extend his contract at the end of the season but he should still be given a hero's send-off. He's definitely the most significant manager in the club's history; they owe so much of the infrastructure at the club to his hard work and dedication. I'll always remember him as a principled manager who served his club well.

I think Arsenal fans might come to miss him and the stability he provided once he goes. While a change is needed, many of them underestimate the turbulence that they will probably face.

Wenger is so consistent in not winning the title that even with no-one else to do it last season, he still was consistent enough to not win it either.
>>
>Cazorla ded until next season

Let's be honest, we're never gonna see him play for Arsenal again.
At the very best he'll get 5-10 games before another injury comes and then he'll either call it quits or go to China ;_;

>>74344456
This is about as funny as it is painful (so, a lot)

It's strange how the best thing we can hope for is a finish outside of the top 4 (or barely scraping 4th place) so that Wenger himself will admit he needs to fuck off.
If he finishes 3rd or - god forbid - 2nd, he will actually consider this a great season and a sign that he's still got it.

Leading us to another 2 years of misery at the very least - during which we will probably miss out on at least 2-3 good coaches that will go to new teams.
>>
>>74340021
>Was he ever really a great manager?
I think his success came because he revolutionised English football in terms of diet, training methods and his extensive knowledge of the French football market right when France produced a crop of outstanding footballers. Now that every single team in the league can do those things too, Wenger provides nothing out of ordinary.
>>
>>74344526
>Wenger himself will admit he needs to fuck off
Not going to happen and you know it.
He used the "richer clubs are holding us down" excuse for how long, before literally all of them got a crisis at the same time last season and look what happened.
NOTHING.
And nothing will happen this season and the season after and the season after and the season after.

They've got a point. I really doubt anyone in our squad has a go at Alexis, Ramsey, Özil etc when they don't show up in a game. Too many players who hide behind being the "confidence player" archetype which ends up making them exempt from criticism and hair-dryer treatment. They end up becoming luxury players who turn up when they want and when they don't no one can tell them shit because it'll hurt their confidence and they'll be shit for another 3 games.

The team is kinda shit, not quality wise but consistency it's very much built like a West Ham/Swansea tier squad.

Throughout the recent years we've only had 3-4 consistent players at any one time in the squad and rarely have they been attackers.
>(Sagna, Koscielny, Cesc)
>(Sagna, Koscielny, RVP*)
>(Monreal, Koscielny, Cazorla, Alexis)

Compare this to the 2002 team for instance (invincibles is to obvious)
>(Seaman, Dixon, Sol, Keown, Cashley, Vieira, Parlour, Ljungberg, Pires, Henry)

That's 10 players who were consistent performers throughout most of their professional careers, few of them attackers. That's why they won the league.

Wenger now prefers flaky confidence players higher up the pitch as they are easier to find and cheaper because they've never been consistent. He thinks he can mould them into consistent performers but doesn't have any structure to his coaching he just basically tells them to go out there and "express themselves" so they remain inconsistent and patchy performers.
>>
>>74340214
It's not Wenger though, Kroenke is to blame. You idiots need to focus on getting him out like how Liverpool fans forced Hicks and Gillette out.

Arsenal made a huge mistake signing Xhaka. They should have bought Kampl for half the price.

For all of you who don't know about him. He plays DM like Xhaka. He's a fantastic passer with great long balls and has a good shot as well just like Xhaka. The main difference between them is that Kampl doesn't like it when the opposition has the ball, he wants it back right away. The best comparison would be that he is like Sanchez but on the DM position. He runs, he passes he shots and he never gives up. Hell he even got into an argument with our national team coach because he thought we were playing like shit.

It's just nobody rates him because he's Slovenian.

>>
>>74348549
>Arsenal have a very very very fucking good squad
good one. we've only got two good players
>>
Just clocked something.
We have a squad of talented players with absolutely no plan
There is no tactic or actual style of play. It's not like back in the day where we played fast passing football and all that. We don't do none of that anymore. We just kind of throw our players onto the pitch and tell them to play.
Look at Tottenham. Honestly, at an individual level a lot of those players aren't as good as ours, but Poch has them playing them in a system that caters specifically to their qualities and covers up their flaws.
I guarantee you that Kyle Walkers and Danny Rose wouldn't perform as well as they do for Tottenham for any other club, because at Spurs they play in a system that is perfectly made for them.
Poch isn't just looking for "good players" like Arsenal do. He's looking for players who are capable of doing a specific function.
It's specialisation.
That's how he bought a relatively promising young lad from League One and made him look like a world beater in less than a season.
>>
>>74348653
You only just clocked?
>>
>>74348549
The defence isn't too bad but the midfield is dire when Cazorla is injured (i.e. most of the time). And the only consistent attacker we have is Alexis. I don't think the squad is that much worse than the other top PL teams but compared to the best in Europe there is a very long way to go.

>>
>>74349078
you're right, wenger really fucked us by clinging on for so long

>>
>>74349017
The reason we concede so many goals is down to Wenger's tactics, the defenders are almost always on the half-way line so whenever a team counters they are pretty much one-on-one with the keeper. I think Mustafi and Bellerin will develop well under a better manager, the only defensive position we really need to look at is LB, and there honestly aren't that many great LBs in Europe that are probably willing to leave their club right now.
>>
>Arsenal fans finally coming to their senses and almost all of them want Wenger out

>other teams' fans throwing hissy fits
>"WENGER IS THE BEST COACH YOU'LL EVER HAVE"
>"YOUR SQUAD IS A 9TH PLACE TEAM WITHOUT WENGER"

It's fucking hysterical, they're actually getting upset that Arsenal fans want this fraud of a manager to finally fuck off after consistently blowing it for a decade. It's like they're scared of Arsenal not being a fucking joke for once.
>>
the last decade of failure is because of Abramovich.

both Wenger and the board knew they could never compete with a team with infinite money, so they stopped trying, and decided to focus on other things, like profit maximisation. so they marketed themselves knock-off, EPL version of Barcelona. they built a new fancy stadium, and convinced a bunch of idiots that they were actually watching something comparable to Barcelona, thus justifying the most expensive tickets in world football. for years and years, Arsenal fans were hypnotised into believing 4 or 5-0 wins, with Wilshere and Walcott doing little one-twos, against Norwich or Birmingham City or QPR, with "silky football" was like watching Barcelona.

so now that is all Wenger is there for. to maximise profits, which is done by finishing 4th with as low a points tally as possible, and reaching the last 16 of the Champions League. and because of this, not only has Wenger forgotten what winning trophies is like, his squad is a bunch of man-children who have no knowledge of winning things. that's why you can look at the likes of Walcott and Wilshere and Oxlaide-Chamberlain, and think "oh, they're only 19 or 20, they'll grow into it", and then you realise they're knocking on 30 years old, and still done fuck all.

Every one of those have both won the league and been sacked within the 13 (THIRTEEN) years since Wenger last won the league.

Wenger has seen Ranieri get sacked, come back and win the league, then get sacked again. They'll hook what's left of his brain up to a computer soon so he can manage Arsenal forever.

Xhaka's okay, it's just that he and Coq are more interchangeable. There's no point in playing them both, and now we've seen for two seasons in a row that we're fucked without Cazorla. Add to that that Ramsey can't play more than 5 games without fucking his hamstring now so he's permashit. Wilshere was the same when he was with us.

Unfortunately Cazorshit is done now so hope we get a decent replacement. Either that or find some way to prevent Ramsey and Wilshere from getting injured, but that's just something I don't see happening at this shitty club. Now I genuinely see no reason for people to come to us though.

>>
>>74361902
Not trying to defend the board here, but the message is skewed against Mr Wenger.
>>
>>74361996
Oh no, not at all.
The real message is that Claudio is so inferior that he could not last 1/10th as long as the The Great Wenger after winning a title.

>>
>>74362056
Claudio's team is struggling to not get relegated, my friend. One point above the death zone or something.

That being said, he should've been let go after the last season fiasco.
Cheers.
>>
>>74340021
Wenger was good when his opponents were a bunch of drunk Brit retards + Ferguson. Then everybody caught up and Wenger got found out. Note how he never did well in Europe, outside from that one fluke season in 2006, because in Europe, you had managers that knew what they were doing. Now those kind of managers are in the Premier League and Wenger can't get close to a league title anymore and gets fucked up the ass by the elite sides regularly.
>>
>>74361926

I hope they get relegated.
>>
>>74361485
>young mourinho is Elliot Rodgers
>>
>>74345044
>Kroenke is to blame.

He really isn't. Becuase Kroenke isn't doing anything, he's just a placeholder, a spoke in the wheel. They allow him to make profit from the club without doing anything and changing up club policy as some kind of dormant owner, because that is what the club wants. Kroenke is literally there so that someone like Usmanov can't take over and become the bigger power and decide on his own what's going to happen there.

Even if you can get Kroenke out, they'll just find some other placeholder to serve that exact function and we wouldn't see anything of note really change.

>>74362302

Arsenal-era Cesc was so magnificent
>>
>>74349425
Oh, you follow him too? Man has elite opinions.
>>
>>74362175
Seriously, I think a bunch of mostly shit players played the best season of their careers at the same time. They demanded, and got, big new contracts when big clubs showed interest. The owner bought every player a new sports car. Vardy's going to have a movie! "Who's better, Mahrez or Hazard?"

The dumbfucks regressed to their normal abilities because the money and fame went to their heads. They stopped trying, they stopped caring, and when they finally noticed relegation looming, they blamed their manager instead of taking responsibility.

I blame Morgan, Huth, Vardy and Mahrez.
I blame player power.
A Premiership winning manager doesn't forget everything during the off season and become incompetent.
>>
>>74361926
>Claudio made them big money superstars( Vardy especially)

Claudio was also well on his way to make them the first PL-champions to get relegated.

>>
>>74362330
>players underperform (one reason or the other) and blame it on the manager

It happens all the time, everywhere.

>>
Why are Arsenal not playing this weekend?
>>
>>74362426

>>
>>74362330

Last season was very much a fluke.

Alongside everyone peaking at the same time, Leicester had some very lucky results; where they narrowly won thanks to refereeing decisions or the opposition imploding at crucial points.

They were also underestimated by opponents for long stretches of the season. The likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, Man Utd would have struggled to put up anywhere near the same points with the same squad, tactics and manager because opponents would just sit off them and neuter the 'stay compact then hit them on the break' tactic that Leicester employed.

It was a remarkable season but very obviously an unsustainable level for them.

I just wonder if they put a relegation wage drop clause in Vardy's bumper contract. If not, they could be in an awful lot of trouble 'cause I can't see many clubs taking him on for £130k per week at 30 years of age, on his current form.
>>

Turnover from football increased to £191.1m from £158m in 2015, an increase of just over 20%, primarily down to the new television deal which accounted for £25m of that increase.
Broadcast now accounts for 45% of football revenue.
Commercial and retail revenue increased by 5% to £57.9m.
Investment in the playing squad saw the amortisation charge on player registrations increase to £36m from £29.2m in 2015
Cash reserves, distinct from available transfer funds, stand at £100.5m
Arsenal Holdings PLC made an overall profit before tax of £12.6m against a loss of £6.2m in 2015.r

Friendly reminder that Wenger leaving won't change much. We will still have a cancerous board who prioritise lining their pockets over winning trophies. We will still have an incompetent medical team that fail to sort out injury problems within a reasonable time-frame. We will still have a completely lacklustre squad except for Alexis (who will more than likely leave soon anyway). We will still fail to attract any new great players because there are three clubs in England that will pay more money and have a better chance of winning trophies. We will still finish fourth every season (although that's mainly because Spurs and Liverpool will choke harder than us, not through any merit of our own).
>>
So Arsenal is not playing tomorrow because Southampton is playing a final against Man U? I don't get it, why don't they just play whoever Man U was supposed to play.
>>
>>74374062
Because the fixtures are decided before the season starts and there's a possibility that United were supposed to play a team that Arsenal has already played twice this season. In this case, that isn't true because it's City but it's a general rule that generally covers all possible cases.

jesus christ almighty... is this basically another mertesacker deal where it's like "thanks for your service" so you toss them an extra year coming off of a season lost to injury?

the truly sad part is that arsenal hasn't managed to find a replacement for cazorla, so we're legitimately missing a ~31-32 year old CM who can't stay on the pitch. if the guy can actually get healthy next year you figure he has to do that rosicky-style "old man arsenal" role where he gets 1 start/sub per month, and even then you figure he'll go off limping by the holidays and that's it for his arsenal career.

so wonga has to buy a new CM, right? i mean, having seen what xhaquelin and coq+el-neny can't do for you [consistently get the ball up into the opponent's half] i would think that you have to assume that 1) cazorla's old 2) ramsey can't be counted on for even 1/2 or 1/3 of a season at a time, and wilshere will resume being perma-crocked when he comes back to arsenal --- therefore since xhaka and elneny are technically nice "forward thinking" DMs as opposed to CMs with DM sensibilities, man, you have to buy a new central mid / offensive-engine this summer, r-right?

>TLDR = arsenal is extending two perma-crocked / past-it guys in mertesacker and cazorla just to be nice and give them at least 1 more season of proper salary to say thanks for the service, r-right?
>>
>>74376459
>Alexis being massively overrated

you know, after he had that "dogshit form" run from jan 2015 - march 2015 and then his 15-16 season was largely "meh" [at least for alexis' standards] i would have agreed with this entering this season. i unironically thought that ozil was the guy you had to re-sign out of him and alexis...

...now, having watched this season i'm through the looking glass clear on the other side saying that you pretty much gotta take whatever wages you were going of offer ozil and throw them on top of what you were going to offer alexis.

yeah, alexis definitely isn't up there in the top-top tier of players with messi, ronaldo, [inb4 chelsea fans claim eden hazard again].. and hell, maybe if you wanna say the 2nd tier is guys like lewandowski and suarez and peak-form-neymar [bayol?]-- then alexis probably isn't even that; but he's the best we've got right now.

this team simply needs goals going forward because i still don't count on giroud to have a consistent full season, and wenger won't give lucas an opportunity to go out and possibly score 20+ goals (he's at 18 apps / 9 goals in all competitions now [~830 minutes i think?] so i'd say his absolute peak could be ~20 league goals if he was a proper starter) -- guys like theo and welbeck? hey "i want to believe" but seriously, out of everyone i've seen this year Lucas seems to be the most consistently YEAH! guy on the team and he can't even get a proper game in the league!

>TLDR = pay alexis, let ozil walk, and look for a new post-ozil #10 and a proper CM this offseason; and whatever you do PLEASE don't think "we don't have to buy a #10 and CM when we've got the ox and wilshere coming back!"

>We don't need a #10. It's a dead position

could you theoretically do some kind of a diamond up front? have alexis/giroud at striker, then you have you wingers [no matter who it SHOULD be it'll be iwobi + ???] and then in lieu of a "traditional #10" you have some hybrid of a CM/#10 playing a little bit deeper to help with getting the ball up into the opponent's half. this CM/#10 would be a crucial role when it's 2 holding mids like coq + elneny/xhaka, as i've seen games where alexis sometimes has to drift back and be a de-facto CM just so they can get the ball up past the mid-field line.

so maybe you just kind of get someone to be that hybrid when they're needed? cuz if you have a DM+CM pairing that's consistently bringing the ball forward they could play more sin a #10 role, but when they can't bring the ball upfield consistently the hybrid has to drop back and essentially be a 2nd CM, so technically this kind of role would be ideal for someone like wilshere/ramsey, two players who i wouldn't say are "pure #10s" (even tho i'm pretty sure ramsey plays pretty close to a #10 role with wales) but at the same time they could bridge the gap between an impotent midfield pairing and a proper #10...

...you know, like ozil should theoretically do if he ever backtracked and tried to help out when things aren't working out mellifluously behind him-- #MustBeNice to have someone who'd do that, huh?

I mean, you could change the formation and go for something like France did with Giroud/Greezman up front, but our formation is fine. It's the player roles that need to be changed.

A #10 in the mould of Ozil doesn't work, but if he was just a standard attacking midfielder rather than having to be the main playmaker our formation would work better. So if he got up to support Giroud more and made runs in behind when Giroud comes short for flick ons our attack would be much more effective. Instead he always comes deep for the ball and doesn't really make attacking runs.

Also, we need wingers that will make runs in behind more often rather than just getting the ball to feet and cutting inside all the time.

Look at how Monaco attacked against Man City. They played a 4-2-3-1 same as us, but their player's first thoughts when they got the ball were to make runs forward while also coming short when they needed to. Our 3 behind the striker would have come short and asked for the ball in more central areas rather than making any dangerous runs or even stretching the play.

>TLDR = There's nothing wrong with our formation. We just need new tactics and a new manager. WENGER OUT

With you 100%. It was like something out of Wenger's wet dream, every other title challenger imploding and all he achieves is being slightly better than them. I bet that's the scenario he's been waiting years for, wish his ego totally crumbled and he called it a day there.I'm afraid he won't settle for less than Fergie, retiring as league champions.

Yes they are expensive as fuck like Higuain costed Juve 100 mil but if you really want to win CL and/or PL you need to stop fielding a West Ham / Crystal Palace ft. Sanchez squad

Wonga has never let you outside of top 4 or CL last 16 and with the squad you have that is very respectable.

These guys are deluded. If you want to compete and be among the best in Europe, you need a very talented squad, or a talented, innovative manager.

In the entire Arsenal squad, how many get into the starting XI of Barca/Madrid/Bayern/Juve/PSG? Maybe Sanchez in 1or2? Maybe a fullback? And that's not to mention teams like Atleti, Sevilla, Monaco, Dortmund. Arguably Arsenal have more talent than a couple of these teams, they certainly have more resources, but they all have dynamic, innovative managers. Managers like what Arsene was 15 years ago.

Those are 9 teams I listed better than Arsenal, not even counting other English teams. At this rate getting knocked out before the last 8 in the CL and finishing near the top is what you'd expect.

Something has to change, either the squad (which involves spending a several 100M) or the manager.

a team of Walcott and Giroud and the likes + Wenger are performing as you'd expect.
A team of Walcott Giroud Ox Ozil etc. + a fresh manager? Might be better
Wenger with a squad of talent he could get if was willing to spend - forget the Pogba's - Higuain/Kante etc, all were affordable. You'll see results improve then too.
But if you do nothing, nothing will change, only morons would expect differently.

Lads I am making a merchandise project for Arsenal and while the official website portrays the club as rich in history and the fans as devoted followers, when I read opinions online I see that the own fans hate the club and that as of today, the club is completely second-rate.

What keeps arsenal fans following their club? What is the ideal that makes it worth it?

agreed although your last line confused me, was it about kante?

the only time coq ever looked good for us was when he came in at the lowest point of our dm crisis and referees were letting him get away with ridiculous fouls without giving yellows for some reason, probably because he was a 'good honest championship lad'

after that honeymoon period, he has been utterly exposed over and over again and yet he is still our only dm

They should've bought Hamsik or Dahoud. If Xhaka can stay on the pitch long enough to develop he'll be a good players but not as good as either of those two. Kampl is a bit lightweight for the prem anyway.

Arsenal needed him, or someone like him, but not just him. Kante is not the player you want to build up play with, he's who you wanted partnering Xhaka or whoever it is you have. Xhaka was a stand out player in the Bundesliga for the past three seasons so he'll come good but (probably not good enough).

If Arsene was worth even 1% of his pay he would sign Naby Keita in the summer

Lol, this thread is my heaven.

I've been supporting Arsenal since like 2010 or sth, and literally it starts to piss me off. Every season there's a lad who has to carry the entire team (RvP, Sanchez, Bendtner). And every season we do fuck all in the transfer market. I have to admit that Wenger was good with the Invincibles, although he's not suitable for todays football. But hey, at least we are above Sp... oh wait.
>>
>>74402554
>fuck all in the transfer market

Shitposting. Wonga spent £100m this window. Record spend for Arsenal. in 20 years he has spent around £600m. His £100m this year put it up to £700m.

What do you get out of pretending to be a fan just to shitpost? I don't get it. I really don't. You're not autistic as Jewmaican who's kept this gimmick up for years. So why do you do it?
>>

I dunno what's worse, autistic '''fans''' in these threads, or people who shitpost falseflagging and pretending to be '''fans'''. I saw this post as I was scrolling down the board. I don't support a Premier League team, but I appreciate Arsenal, but why do you fucks shitpost in these threads when 90% of the visitors to it are shitposters like yourself? Don't bother replying, it's a rhetorical question. Have a fucking look at yourself mate and think what you're doing. This will be my first and last post in this thread. I'm 99% sure it's shitposters from Reddit who know they'll get banned if they shitpost in Reddit.
