I think a lot of it still comes down to cumulative punches in and out of the ring. Chavez Sr. didn't like training any more than his son and his team kept him really busy, but he wasn't sparring much. Foreman had few career rounds relatively speaking and his sparring partners on film look hilariously overmatched.

Ali and Roach on the other hand were in tons of gym wars. Toney sparred as a substitute for roadwork and Jones Jr. said he put in more rounds in the gym than any other fighter he knew of.

I thought this was a very good fight, and a surprisingly good card. This is the second Mayweather Promotions card this year that's had some great matchmaking, despite not being on the same scale as Jack vs. DeGale, for what it was it was a good event and a fun night of boxing.

I think you can score the fight either way, any card between 97-93 for either guy seems like an acceptable score. I had it 95-95 but still felt Broner did just a fraction better. I think those check left hooks and inside uppercuts won him the fight. It's a shame Granados doesn't really have any snap in his punches, he got into Broner a lot, but there wasn't too much visible pay off, Broner never seemed hurt and only ever really backed up on his own accord.

Surprised the Avanesyan vs. Peterson fight was entertaining. Both Broner/Peterson's wins seem to set them up for B-side slots on bigger promotions. If it ever needed further evidence though, it's clear Broner is not going to be an elite Welterweight. Shouldn't be going life and death with a guy like Granados.
>>

Sure, but there's non-world class and there's non-world class. The best women are still below their male counterparts at the British title level

>it doesn't exactly clash with anything important, and if it does you can just watch the thing it clashes with instead.

It didn't used to, but now it increasingly encroaches on coverage that could be going to better male boxers instead. It's tougher and takes more skill to broach the top 100 as a man than it does to be #1 as a woman, yet you're magnitudes less likely to get any decent coverage. I already mentioned how amateur boxing had to get rid of an entire weight class to make space for women's boxing in the Olympics, and now you have exhibition bouts featuring Taylor, Adams and Shields taking up precious time on televised pro boxing cards, even PPVs sometimes. I just don't want boxing to go down the route MMA did. If I was an MMA fan I'd be seriously pissed at the amount of time wasted on WMMA

Mate, that card in Norway is not taking away any male air time whatsoever. There wouldn't magically be a huge male card selling out an arena in Oslo to take its place if that didn't exist. People may be interested in it for reasons other than the quality of the boxing but then that exists all over the sport, Haye vs Bellew is on pay per view when Brook Spence might well not be, are you equally up in arms that the worse fight is getting more attention in that case?

MMA in general is not a financial success aside from a handful of PPV draws, it's almost identical to boxing. WMMA needs stars just like in the men's divisions.

>>74287928
This. Plus women's boxing is real niche-y and not popular enough to draw by itself, which makes it a great card padder. Christy Martin carved out a nice career for herself fighting on Tyson undercards, if Shields is managed well we could see her adding some much needed depth to PPV events since she'll be cheap and every attempt to build US events around female boxers has failed.
>>
>>74287917
208 was the first non-Rousey female PPV headliner outside of UFC 200 and it did (apparently) 200K buys with Anderson Silva as the co-main.

here are the 2016 PPV buys from MMAPayout
UFC 195 Lawler vs Condit 300,000
UFC 196 McGregor vs Diaz 1,317,000
UFC 197 Jones vs St. Preux 322,000
UFC 198 Werdum vs Miocic 217,000
UFC 199 Rockhold v Bisping 2 320,000
UFC 200 Tate v Nunes 1,009,000
UFC 201 Lawler v Woodley 240,000
UFC 202 McGregor v Diaz 2 1,650,000
UFC 203 Miocic v Overeem 450,000
UFC 204 Bisping v Henderson 2 290,000
UFC 205 McGregor v Alvarez 1,300,000
UFC 206 Holloway v Pettis 150,000
UFC 207 Nunes v Rousey 1,100,000

McGoober, Rousey and UFC 200 notwithstanding, 200K is maybe a bit less than what they usually do.

>I already mentioned how amateur boxing had to get rid of an entire weight class to make space for women's boxing in the Olympics, and now you have exhibition bouts featuring Taylor, Adams and Shields taking up precious time on televised pro boxing cards, even PPVs sometimes.

Are you OK with these things, then?

I don't care about the card in Norway or women's boxing per se, I just don't like that promoters and the media have been trying to build it up lately. There's only so many TV slots for boxing and I don't want it squandered on shite women's boxing, and I don't want pundits and the media acting as if these hobbyists are remotely in the same league as a competent male boxer

And yes the Haye PPV is a joke, but his skill-set still warrants national, and even international, coverage. My problem with Taylor and co. is that they would never be anywhere near television if they were exactly as good as they currently are but in a male body
>>
>>74287917
>>74288113
also this, I could see Katie being the *main* event on a Hearn PPV given a decent co-main and undercard. It'd probably be beneficial for him to capitalise on the "GRRL POWER" and "just like the boys teehee ;p" market. I can already imagine the BBC running an article on it now.
>>
>>74288067
There are plenty of more deserving male boxers who could pad undercards
>>
>>74288127
well, it only did 17k less than Werdum vs Miocic, which was for the HW title.
>>
>>74288148
Taylor will probably win titles in about six divisions based on the fact that she's a full-time professional in a sea of hobbyists and then be hailed as an equal to Mayweather and Pacquiao, despite the fact that being the best male boxer is about 100x more difficult than being the best female boxer. This will be seen as huge victory for feminism, of course

>>74288262
UFC 200 was a milestone event, which is why the buyrate was so high. Brock Lesnar also fought on the card which also helped, although it doesn't really detract from your argument kek.
>>
>>74288138
Matchroom put on hundreds of fights a year over their cards, I refuse to believe you can possibly be this angry over like 5 of them being taken up by a woman. There are plenty of people who don't deserve to earning what they do on their shows if we're looking at it from a global skill level.

The Olympics are different, half of what they're about is promoting sport to as many as possible all across the world, so of course they have to include women.
>>
>>74288278
Maybe Estrada should face Cuadras himself instead of taking endless tune-ups and whining on Twitter
>>
>>74288162
I get where you're coming from, I'd hate to see somebody decent bumped so Shields can bludgeon a Wendy's drive-thru attendant, but so many undercard fighters are complete nobodies. I don't see the problem with adding a name that will generate some casual interest and PPV buys. Like I said, there's no primary market for female boxers in the states so it's cheap enough to run at the same price as a bout between two guys that will never amount to anything.
>>
>>74288427
Estrada moved to bantamweight and I'm pretty sure Chocolatito wanted close to a million (not that he doesn't deserve it) for the rematch.
>>
>>74288442
I mean even guys like Salido and Rosado are usually only getting like $50k per fight, so putting on an epic yet affordable undercard would be the easiest thing in the world if you had the will. But promoters have the notion, rightly or wrongly, that a bunch of prospect showcase fights or sideshows like women's boxing will attract more eyes. Personally I doubt it, I think that consistently putting on evenly matched fights, even between fighters who aren't individually that appealing, would have the effect of building a trustworthy brand and lead to more profits in the long run. I think boxing has a brand problem with casuals because every time they tune in there are a bunch of mismatches and robberies and other fuckeries
>>
>>74288500
Estrada moved to super flyweight, the same division as Gonzalez and Cuadras. It's true that Gonzalez hasn't sounded all that keen on it, but Estrada needs to put the work in and make himself impossible to ignore instead of feeling entitled to the rematch just because the first fight was close
>>
>>74288644
I agree, since Viloria he's done nothing but fight Filipino bumswingers (inb4 people call Viloria a Filipino bumswinger)
>>
>>74288611
>Personally I doubt it, I think that consistently putting on evenly matched fights, even between fighters who aren't individually that appealing,

You're thinking about it from a hardcore's perspective. Causals just want big names they've heard of who they've been told by the media are great. Creating the aura of something special even when it isn't really there is very important to get that type of fan to part with their money. Sad state of affairs but there it is, at least this year is better than last.
>>
>>74288611

It's hard to get boxers to take 50/50 fights without a meaningful title or paying them a lot for it
>>
>>74288611
like it or not, female fighting does have its niche appeal. it'd be a bit like always having match ups that are between people who are over 7ft tall on the undercard, more a spectacle than anything else.

it all comes down to appealing to casuals, and most casuals only want to see the top name (Floyd and McGregor) while solid fighters who always put in work are a waste time for them and therefore a waste of money for promoters.

with that said, I agree that consistent, action-oriented bouts would create more hardcores out of fairweather fans and overall improve the boxing economy.

You have to look at it from the boxers point of view as well. If you're a young upcoming boxer you don't want to be in hard 50/50 fights when you're still learning your craft you want some cans and then a gradual increase in competition as you climb the ladder to a title as you probably care about money more than anything else.

Anthony Ogogo was 1.05 to beat Craig Cunningham last year, got his eye socket broken ruling him out for a year and now has a loss to a British Middleweight on his record.

Browne is a KO waiting to happen. I don't think the Kalajdzic fight was just a "bad night" for him.
He has a good jab and that's about it. He is backed into the ropes extremely easily and insists on getting inside to fight even though he has horrendous inside defense. He understood the latter in the mid rounds of the Kalajdic fight and started clinching. If he fights Stevenson and Stevenson doesn't age overnight I expect Browne to get KO'd by hook.

He is young for LHW though and might improve.

>>74287876
Yes, he could do it but that doesn't say much. If he fights for a title in the near future it will probably be because he was cherrypicked by a promoter-fighter.

He has decent offense, good power and a seemingly great chin but he is slow, and has zero defense. His last opponent (Franz Rill) got off a lot of shots on him before he was stopped, and really made Granat look bad.
He also barely uses his reach and I see him throwing half jabs from the chest all the time.

He is also very young for HW and might improve.
>>
>>74305508
out of Dillian Whyte, Dominic Breazeale, Erkan Teper, Izuagbe Ugonoh, Jarrell Miller and Adrian Granat who do you feel could have the most success @ HW?

The heavyweight prospects I have on my BoxRec watchlist are: Tom Schwarz, Sergey Kuzmin, Oleksandr Teslenko, Con Sheehan, Nathan Gorman, Bogdan Dinu, Rostislav Plechko and Darmani Rock. Will also add DuBois once he makes his debut

Anyone got any others they've got an eye on?
>>
>>74306297
> Whyte, Breazeale and Teper have already been exposed.
I wouldn't say Teper was *exposed* in the Hammer loss (unless you mean he got caught juicing) and I could see him posing a real risk to the lower top 10 with his power. Whyte also has a bit of ability about him, I just think he's a little small to make an impact in the higher rungs of the division. Breazeale, on the other hand, is a bum.
>>
>>74306339

Teper was only good because of steroids. Whyte beats Miller, that would be a good match up.
>>
>>74306356
>Teper was only good because of steroids.
Whyte also got done for PEDs; why aren't you saying the same about him?
>>
>>74306383

Whyte got a 2 year ban for using Jack3D a pre workout supplement that was available over the counter. Calling it a PED is a joke, it's nothing like using steroids. The difference is Whyte is clean and passing drug tests and is in that B bracket of heavyweights just outside the top pack of 6 or 7 Teper was only good because of steroids, off steroids he can't compete and will lose to the gate keepers like Whyte, Miller.
>>
>>74306336

>>
>>74306511

Jack3d was a very popular bodybuilding supplement in the late 2000's before it got banned, Whyte obviously wouldn't of read the label. There is a world of difference between injecting yourself with testosterone and taking a dodgy supplement from China that was on UK shelves for a time.
>>

Scott Quigg has left Joe Gallagher to train with Freddie Roach
>>
>>74307372
yy
>>
>>74307415

>“After six years of working together I announce my departure from Joe Gallagher,” said Quigg. “We have been a great team and achieved a lot and had some great wins together. “I have moved up to Featherweight with the goal of becoming a two-weight World champion and believe I need a fresh challenge to help me grow. Over the last few weeks I've been in America training and I'm delighted to announce I will be basing myself in Los Angeles at the Wild Card gym working under the guidance of Freddie Roach. “This is an opportunity that I couldn't pass up and I believe this move and change will take me to another level. I'd like to thank Joe for everything he has done for me; he is a tremendous coach and friend, which we will remain. Our first fight together was for the British title and I went on to become world champion under his guidance and for that I will be forever grateful. I wish Joe and all the lads every success in the future.”

>>
>>74307583
They're both great at getting their fighters strong and in shape. Gallagher teaches solid fundamentals while Roach is a little more creative offensively and comes up with smarter gameplans. This could be a good evolution for Quigg

What active trainers do you rate, then?
>>
>>74307592
Just like in almost every other sport a champion father doesn't guarantee a champion kid.
>>
>>74307616

He's good at taking dumb Manc lads with limited talent and getting them as far as they can. You can't knock what he's done with Crolla for example.

However his Homer Simpson tactics don't work at the world level. Callum Smith is maybe the one elite talent he has so that'll be his true test.
>>
>>74306819
There's been many older interviews where Sr has either said that he wants junior to retire, or that he never wanted him to be a boxer. I guess he's supportive either way. They've both said that money is no problem, I'm sure living in Mexico, they're set up pretty nice.
