I've been doing digging around and trying to figure out what NHLGames/LazyMan does and how it does it. Unfortunately I'm not an IT expert so it's not like I have a real clue about how stuff works, but from what I've seen and read, LazyMan parses some JSON info from an official and public NHL API which has the match details and some of that info is used for figuring out the stream. Stream apparently uses HLSVariant, at least that's what has popped up here and there. The hosts file maps the NHL domain to some IP, and from what I've read, I think under that IP is a server that caches keys somehow (legit nhl.tv account getting keys or has someone figured out how NHL generates those keys?) and feeds them to livestreamer so that you get a legit stream link ready to launch with VLC?

I dunno, something like that. I'm pretty interested in what is happening behind that mysterious IP, but I'm pretty sure it's something the NHL would want to shut down and sue immediately so it's not something I would pursue doing.

Ok yeah so after hours of digging around the only real revelation I got was the way to get the master m3u8 for a game's stream through some guys web server, and that you can pass to livestreamer with the other arguments that NHLGames passes (mainly the path to your player, http header, stream quality from all the available in the master m3u8 and no ssl verification).

The thing is, the hosts file modification that maps the NHL domain to an IP is the key (pun unintended) to the whole thing, since that serves the keys so you can decrypt and receive the actual stream data in chunks encrypted every sec or few secs or something.

I read about NeuLion and back then you could actually generate a valid token to get access to the legit NHL stream since it was apparently a static string that they just tried to make hard to find out in their own streaming program. Right now you gotta decrypt to get the actual .ts files so you can see the stream, and that uses a key that changes every now and then, I've no idea how often it changes, probably every few seconds or so, I dunno. But that decrypting is what the hosts file modification does, the server is supplying the user with keys that allows them to decrypt and receive the .ts files from the livestreamer stream request.

One way it could work is that behind that server is some guy with legit NHL.tv account and his account is fetching and giving those legit decryption keys to everyone who has the NHL keyfiles domain redirected to their server. The "downside" to that is that to get smooth streams during heavy rush hours you'd either have to know and redirect to a small, not much used server that is doing the same thing, or supply the keys yourself that way, and in that case, you're already paying for the service. The other way is that somehow, someone is emulating the key service or spoofing keys somehow. I've no idea if spoofing them is at all viable and how the decryption happens, I'd wager my money on legit keys by someone with an NHL.tv account since you contact the NHL servers when requesting the stream with the master m3u8 and you probably receive packages from that with NHL's applied encryption keys.
