Boxing isnt really promoted in the mainstream in the States unless it's a Canelo fight.
I'd imagine in New York they will have some sort of promotions going on maybe posters and billboards. Down here in Miami there's nothing.
However a couple of passengers I took lyft driving spoke about the fight when I mentioned I was into boxing and what not.
And the Breakfast club had Gennady Golovkin on a few weeks back promoting his fight with Danny Jacobs. They also had their host spar with Shawn Porter with the media. So I'd imagine they may have something going on down the line unless Angel Garcia fucked that up.

Yes they are.

But fighters also need to promote themselves as well. Be more active on all the social medias, fucking hang out with rappers and NBA players and all that bullshit. Stuff like the breakfast club, as retarded as that show is, interviews do nothing but good for promotion as well.
I think by the end of this year, boxing will be in a much healthier state than it was in 2015/16. If a fighter catches the public's attention the casuals will be all over it once again.
Think about how many record breaking fights there have ever been at one point in time. Mayweather Pacquiao is just a new milestone that will be broken eventually (hopefully not soon with the Mcmeme shitfest).

Yes, and Canelo is a superior boxer in both technique and power, so GGG won't be able to do the same with him. What is at all difficult to understand?
>>
>>74258827
What matters here is that he's not superior to Golovkin in any of those cathegories, and he's smaller, he'll get pummelled by the jab as well.
>>
>>74258827
Canelo is most successful when he can plant his feet and utilise his hand speed and combination punching; he won't be able to do that against a heavy hitter like GGG and certainly lacks the footwork and finesse to be able to stick and move against him.
>>
>>74258004
noone cares about belts

>>
>>74258886
>>74258844
GGG is the perfect style matchup for Canelo, especially as he gets older. Canelo is coming into the prime of his career and is far faster to the jab, a pressure fighter with a slower jab who just runs at him and lets him find his range is perfect for his style. The movement thing is a bit of a red herring since GGG for the first time in his career will be fighting someone who is giving him a lot more than he takes with decent power behind it.

People have built GGG into this unstoppable machine but on the back of what? Lemieux's style plays into everything that makes him look good and that it unironically his only good win. You can make all these claims about how incredible he is at all these different things but to be honest there really is nothing you can point to to back it up. Beating fucking wade and overpowering a blown up welterweight isn't any proof at all.

fun fact: Carl Thompson used to be a kickboxer before transitioning to boxing and fought under the name Adrian Thompson (real name Adrian Carl Thompson). I couldn't really tell you much about his career except for the fact that he twice fought the future and first ever K-1 WGP champion Branko Cikatic (lost both fights)
>>
>>74258975
>far faster to the jab
Canelo has no jab.
Golovkins style could (possibly) work in his favour, but GGG has a pretty decent chin and is a much harder puncher than anyone else that Alvarez has fought, and coupled with his accuracy and relentlessness I can't see how Canelo can withstand 12, especially considering he can only fight half rounds with his style of fighting.
>>
>>74259067
No shit. Wish there was something like boxrec for kickboxing, it's almost impossible to find information on records and the like.
>>
>>74259113
I had actually made a functioning database that I was going to use for KB/MT fights but I got disheartened by the fact that there'd always be fights I'd never know about and decided to scrap it.

http://www.starsystemkickboxing.net/Pages/default.aspx
there's a few records for the more notable kickboxers like Bill Wallace and Fred Royers
>>
>>74259107
>Canelo has no jab

Not as a weapon in itself, but used as something to manage range he certainly does. Even against the tappy boxers who are faster and more than him they spend half their time on the back foot and lunging in because they're worried about the combos you mention coming in behind the lead jab. Again he won't even have that problem against GGG, who he doesn't need to chase at all, that completely isn't his style. Those power combos he uses to win his best wins will be open all day long because of the superior speed.
>>
>>74259177
Superior speed means nothing when you can't get in range because you're being pummelled by the best jabber in the division.
>>
>>74259193
Except GGG will have to respect the range to avoid those combos, he will have to avoid the quicker lead jab of Canelo in the same way as any other opponent Canelo has fought. Again fighters walking on to those combos is exactly how Canelo wins when he looks his best, and unlike Lemieux his timing and ability to set those up is world class.

I honestly believe it won't even be close when it happens, Canelo by KO easily. Bored of talking about it now so this is my last post on it.
>>
>>74259154
This still has potential. I wonder how hard it would be to get your hands on any kind of official records. I suspect that official record-keeping is a lot more lax compared to boxing and MMA but you might still be able to fill in some huge gaps. Even boxrec has tons of holes, especially when it comes to Asia parts of the Midwest, and many other places.
>>
>>74259254
>I suspect that official record-keeping is a lot more lax compared to boxing and MMA
that's exactly it.
Boxing has the advantage of being a very historic and popular sport which leads into it being heavily recorded while MMA is very recent and newer technologies allow easier archiving. Kickboxing is somewhere in the middle where it isn't quite as historic for it to be followed as closely as boxing was/is, nor is it recent enough for everything to be on the internet.

I'm afraid of most things pre-1990's are pretty difficult to find.
>>
>>74259290
Interesting. Do you think it's a case of records not being kept to begin with as opposed to being obscure? Not hard to imagine a lot of events being unsanctioned.
>>
>>74259362
IIRC Paul Maslak (the guy who created the STARS ranking system) had a bunch of physical records in archive but they were destroyed (at least partially). at the very least, the PKA/WKA records have existed but mostly seem to have vanished into the ether, probably out of disinterest.

He's beaten some solid guys that other top Mw's have struggled with, namely Murray, Macklin and Geale and did it easily. After he destroys Jacobs, you can add him to the list.

Your post should be applied to Canelo. He's the one with Alfonso Gomez, Matt Hatton, Josesito Lopez and Floyd on his resume. His best "wins" are questionable decisions against fringe boxers like Lara and Trout, where he looked like shit. Floyd was already and old man and Canelo didn't do a damn thing in that fight.

So what exactly is so great about Canelo aside from looking like a great heavybag puncher against shot old heavy bags like Angulo and Kirkland?

If it was such a no brainer, Golden Girl would've already made the fight, but they don't because they know he will lose and their go their Mexican cuck bux.
>>
>>74259226

>how does I get inside?

You act like Canelo's some slick boxer. Even Cotto was landing combinations against him. Obvious bate.
>>
>>74260376
I'm glad it happened because it taught him a lot but I'd like to see it avenged. It's a fight with an inbuilt storyline that would get people's attention, plus it would be a great measuring stick to see how far he has come since then. I suspect that even though he has undoubtedly improved and would beat Salido decisively now, it's still a relatively tricky style match up for him compared to some of the other prospective opponents at 130. And it'd also be nice to have that symmetry between his pro career and his legendary amateur career, in which he also had an educative early loss which he subsequently avenged
>>
>>74260416
I'm pretty sure Golovkin's arms are longer than Canelo's and he fights at a longer range as well. He will simply wear Canelo down with jabs and body shots until the latter half of the fight when he will start to push him against the ropes and beat him up badly

Its not about arm length, but it is about controlling the distance and putting pressure on. Canelo's never had this. All his fights are basically cherrypicks.

I honestly don't even think he'll beat Chavez Jr. Its one thing to beat up on guys moving up from 135, but for some reason he never fights guys his own size. Only reason he's doing it now is because the public is finally sick of it so you'll start to see how good he really is. If at all.

What a shit card. Literally the next day at York Hall there's a better card than that and it's not being televised. It has two English title fights and one Southern Area. Hearn's card only has one Southern Area title fight. He should really have used this opportunity to show some competitive small hall fights

Yeah, and while Khan was looking "good" against him, Canelo was solidly working Khan's body for the entire time, softening him up for the KO

Canelo is a de la hoya/HBO hype job, I don't know how people don't see this. He is a gimmick, from his looks to his fighting style. He was put on to bring casuals into boxing.

Why do eastern European fights wait till their almost past their primes to start boxing?? Same with guys like oleksander usyk he's like 30 or Beterbiev whos also 30? In Mexico we start at like 16 lol, Canelo is 26 and has a decade of pro career already.
>>

Crawford would toy with him.
>>
>>74262050

>>
>>74262706
>>74262650

I get that but why east till your almost 30 to start boxing pro? Most people fall of their primes early into their 30s
>>
>>74262756
Wait*
>>
>>74262756
because they get paid well enough in the amateurs, whereas you have to go through a lot of bullshit politics and promotion crap in the pro scene and worst of all is if you lose your 0 you automatically make less money.

You think it's easy, but imagine if the US was poor and Russia was rich and you decided one day after doing boxing in a gym for just couple of years or more, at age 19, to move to a country where you need money to enter, where you need money for initial investment and where you need to speak their language and you just can't.

Easy to talk about this shit, but don't think anyone like Arum or whatever just stay there and say "hey, come here, Russians! I will help you!"
>>
>>74262756

They get well compensated by the government, and the pro scene isn't as lucrative or as well connected as in the US. Look at the difficulties GGG had with promotion until about 2013.
>>
>>74262823
look at Kovalev, nigga went in half a million debt until he finally started making money by his 19th fight. It's fucking awful, what do you expect. At least he was lucky he found a Russian manager who basically invested in him all those years.
>>
>>74262828
Good point, there is no money in mexican ameatuer boxing so they turn pro early to hustle for the family. Shit they don't even pay for Olympians to go to the Olympics, sounds cruel but in hindsight its probably the reason mexico has so many world champs.

>>
>>74263138
People writing him off are insane, just looking at his Instagram you'll see he's training like crazy. He knows what's on the line for him
>>
>>74262828

One of the things I dislike about GGG's career is was how he completely wasted his 20's in boxing (not his fault at all). It wasn't until about the simon lijaun fight (my first time seeing GGG live) where people started talking to him, he was like 29 or so at the time. I wish GGG was 26 years old right now, not 34. His prime is about to end. The good thing is that he has taken almost no real punishment as a pro. No bad injuries. But make no mistake, boxing is a young mans sport. A guy like canelo will be completely washed out of boxing at 34 years old.
>>
>>74264190

I am honestly thinking about putting down $100 for chavez. People do not realize canelo is only 5'7 1/2 in real life, a true 154lb fighter. JCC JR is every bit of 6 foot, long ass arms and will be pushing 190lbs on fight night. Go watch what he did to andy lee, he tanked all of andys hardest punches and ended up tiring him out then stopping him. This size difference in this fight will be massive. I mean even sergio martinez who is a solid 5'10 with a middle weight frame was having some trouble with chavez' strength in the later rounds.

I'm pretty much able to keep up with guys in my gym when sparring, even some of the dudes who compete.

But there is this one guy who decimates me every time with his constant aggression and fast, consecutive jabs. The really frustrating thing is that he actually has no boxing technique since he doesn't slip nor bob and weave EVER.

Suggestions?
>>
>>74268131
>>74268131
Make him pay for throwing all those fast, concecutive jabs. Try to counter them with a right (I assume you are both orthodox fighters) and then establish your own jab.

I could sit here and be an armchair trainer all day, but if you are really getting decimated that probably means that there is some significant disparity in experience, athletic ability, or skill overall, in which case none of the "tricks" you'll learn will help that much and you really just need to train more.

Also ask your trainer.

Jesus Christ, the delusion on this blog. Every single article is gear toward spinning Klitschko as the best heavyweight ever.

Nevertheless, there are a couple good points buried in the mountain of steaming horseshit. Ali certainly clinched a lot and could be extremely rough on the inside, and the fight itself was a pretty one-sided win for Frazier rather than the back-and-forth war its made out to be. But it's still 99% nonsense. Never listen to anyone that uses caps that much.

It's a careful balance between importance of the fight, it being priced competitively and not making the OP too long. The only fight I missed out that sort of matters and has been priced competitively was the Browne vs Williams Jr fight. If you're going to watch the Broner fight then Lamont Peterson is on the undercard of that anyway. I will add dates next time.

Yeah I had tried to make them a couple of times before too but they never lasted. Decided to just keep forcing it off page 10 after kovalev ward and hope it stuck. Is nice to have it for middle sized and smaller cards, they basically never got talked about and threads about them would get like 20 posts max because nobody knew if one would get made or not.

I saw the main event and it was stupid. Mostly a staring contest, eventually Jones found his range and started getting busier, and then Gunn sat on his stool after Jones landed the first two clean shots of the fight and hurt him. Dunno whether he quit or was paid to take a loss but it was a pretty shit ending to a worse fight.

I will say though, Jones's speed and reflexes are still there in small bursts. His legs and power are gone but he still looks pretty fast on the rare occasions when he actually feels like fighting.
>>
>>74273290
You could tell Jones needed to fight someone who was that much of a lump and would allow him to take most of a round off. It was pretty depressing in honesty, you can still see some of the brilliance there but he shouldn't be doing it anymore.

If he's keeping you on the end of his jab, maybe try to close the distance and throw off his rhythm and get to a place where his jab is useless. Slip his jab and get inside on him, hold on the inside and rough him up a bit. Think Tyson. If he's faster than you on both feet and hand, you're kinda fucked but you could still try to work your way in and land shots (think Frazier/Ali).

Or, better yet, if he's coming at you with no technique than set up counters and pivot. Hard to say without knowing more info.

fucking hell lads ;_;
>>
So I decided to watch a few fights and one of the guys just gave up halfway through the fight during one of the breaks between rounds. How common is this? It seems to me like he should have at least tried to finish even if he was outclassed.

>>
>>74273954
Was that Nicholas Walters? It's not really common and will probably ruin his career
>>
>>74273910
Virgil only has one successful fighter, and that's mostly because of Ward's natural talent. He's overrated as fuck.
>>
>>74273954
>gave up halfway through the fight during one of the breaks between rounds

Gave up or was pulled out? Being told you can't carry on by a referee, doctor or your corner because you've taken too much punishment is reasonably common. Straight giving up in your corner is very rare, the more common way to quit in boxing is to pretend you've been KOed.

Holds all night and gets judges/refs help him out all while fighting in his home town.

kek
>>
>>74273954

Quitting is the one thing that will ruin your career. If Duran can't live it down, nobody can.

When boxers want out they do things like fake an injury, try and get DQd or lay down until the count of 9.5 and act incensed when the ref waves it off.
>>

>>
>>74274097
To be fair Duran did plenty that was impressive after quitting. But I agree that the only reason he's not talked about as potentially the best ever is quitting.
>>
>>74274057

Walters was criticised a lot for that but he was being outclassed and knew he couldn't win

>>

British boxing is more fun because there's personalities. Most of the fighters aren't world level but the domestic rivalries are more interesting. It's a marginalised urban sport in the US. Mayweather was the last good shit talker.

>>74275042

Personalities all over the boxing world. IFLtv and Sky just do a good job of letting the public see those personalities.

American media doesn't do that, and all the non english speaking boxers can't convey any personality through translators.
>>
>>74274997
Cotto is a future hall of fame, but his face makes it seem like he's always pissed, even if he's not

What's holding Wilder back is the lack of rivalries and credible wins on his resume. He can talk and he has the look, if he had Fury to bounce off he would be gold. He can't go to the next level only beating bums.

How does one lift for strength and train to box concurrently? Would a bastardized version of the bulgarian method work?
>>
>>74277968
You don't.
>>
Crazy as it may sound, PBC is really the first attempt at getting consistent top-level fights on free TV in 25 years. Duk Koo Kim's death and Roy Jones getting dicked over at the Olympics put a pretty permanent end to boxing on network TV in the late 80s, leaving only the pay networks and PPV to pick up the slack.

It's not really alive or dead necessarily, it's just on the fringes where only a fighter or two every generation can capture the public's attention and generate big-time casual PPV buys. It's clear that the sport needs a new model to be as successful as it was in years past but PPV is still so lucrative that it'll stick around for a long time. Honestly I don't see any major changes coming, there's a ton of risk involved in moving away from PPV and the Al Haymon Experiment seems likely to implode.
>>

I think you could just train for boxing on your off days and lift 3 timkes a week full body or something?

If your objective is competing and not fitness then I have no idea, maybe ask a coach?
>>
>>74278065

Al Haymon has no product to sell so it all depends on him getting a tv deal as he's hit the ceiling with tv ratings. You're right though, UFC isn't really doing that much better than boxing with it's typical PPV buy rate. They just had 2 stars in Rousey and McGregor that the mainstream latched onto so they cleared a million with them. Americans are fickle.
>>
>>74278271
Tbh I don't think fighting sports will evolve past having 2 or 3 stars holding up the entire sport
>>
Need the fights to start

No fights since Eubz, been getting impatient
>>
>>74278313

Yeah before Mayweather you have to go back to Lennox Lewis vs Mike Tyson for a big selling PPV in the US. It's cult of personality, brands don't mean little.
>>
>>74278313
Well all major sports are based around a handful of core superstars and personalities, but boxing doesn't have the consistent branding and marketing of sports franchises. Even if you despise Jay Cutler with a hatred more powerful than a thousand screaming, red-hot sun you're still going to watch if you're a Bears fan. Boxing doesn't have a hook like that so promoters have to go all-in as soon as they find somebody that can carry PPV sales.
