Reminder that the only reason he didn't bleed to death was because one of the trainers was a former Army surgeon and knew to get his fingers in the wound to stave off the flow of blood

Didn't they get a priest to perform his last rites too?

>>74212085
guy lost 1.5 liters (~50 oz.) of blood.

from wikipedia: "Many spectators were physically sickened by the sight. The excessive amount of blood caused eleven fans to faint, two more to suffer heart attacks and three players to vomit on the ice."

if the first-response athletic trainer (an army medic, as >>74212658 pointed out) had not correctly grabbed his neck, located the artery, and pinched off blood flow, he would have died. if the team doctor had not immediately afterwards kneeled on malarchuk's collarbone to reduce his breathing rate and lower his metabolism, he would have died.

Actually it's more than that. The only reason he survived was

Without all those things happening he would've died within minutes of leaving the ice surface.

I once broke my arm playing soccer in first grade. I tripped on the ball and landed on my arm with all of my body weight crashing down. Imagine taking about the halfway point of your forearm and bending it at a very sharp 90 degree angle upwards. The bone didn't pierce the skin, but you could see it almost penetrating and joilting up from underneath my skin. Wish I had the X rays with me to show you lads.

Anyways, I bring this up because I was very fortunate in the ordeal. I didn't feel a thing. It didn't hurt one bit. I was just playing soccer one moment, and all of a sudden blacked out. When I woke up a few seconds later, kids around me were screaming and freaking out, and I was genuinely confused. The body going into shock can be an incredible thing. Makes me wonder if athletes like in OP's image too were spared or pain.

Anyone else who has broken bones, did you feel pain? If so, how bad was it?

No one gave a shit back then, it was just "lul shit's dangerous" and they just expected accidents were a part of it. It wasn't until the late 60s early 70s that it was getting out of hand, some circuits were, apart from a few useless straw bales, virtually identical to everyday civilian use.

Drivers were even expected to keep driving even if there was a dead driver lying in the road

>The crash occurred on lap 37 of the 67 lap event. Phillips was in 10th place when his Oldsmobile was hit by the car of Steven Howard, who steered high to avoid a two-car spinout. Howard's car forced Phillips' car onto its right side, then smashed it roof-first into the retaining wall. Until 1996, NASCAR cars were not yet required to be equipped with the "Earnhardt bar", a roof-support bar running down the middle of the windshield, designed to prevent fatal roof collapse in roof-first accidents. His roll bars failed to protect the roof; both the roll bars and the roof itself were sheared completely off the car, exposing the interior of the driver compartment and grinding Phillips and the compartment against the wall and fence, killing him instantly. When the vehicle came back down onto the track on its wheels, there was a massive "gaping hole" where the roof was supposed to be.

Phillips, whose body was mutilated by the track's steel catch fence and a caution light fixture at high speed, was both dismembered and decapitated, in what a photographer on-scene described, "as gruesome a wreck as I can ever recall".[1] In video footage taken at the scene of the accident, the first rescuer is initially shown running to the car, then immediately turning away after seeing Phillips' body and realizing the hopelessness of any attempt at resuscitation. The track was littered with car debris, blood, bone, and numerous external and internal body parts, necessitating a complete and lengthy red flag while track officials wearing surgical gloves placed white sheets over various body parts in the vicinity of the crash and hosed down the stands, which were showered with the mess. The driver's head - still in the racing helmet - was found at the entrance of the pit road, and one of his hands was found suspended in the retaining fence,

Holy fuck, was this the dirtiest team in the history of the NHL?! I don't really remember these Canuck teams because if I recall they were never any good but I remember all those names and I know they're all infamous for being cheap shot artists and assassins.

Malarchuck was fucking insane, he would use anti psychotics while in goal while he never actually killed himself, he attempted and did it wrong

These guys lose literal lbs of water weight, they are stuck inside those tiny cockpits going 200mph for hours and there is a chance they will die. It's a sport.

I don't even follow NASCAR but anyone who thinks it's not a sport doesn't know what those guys go through.
>>
What's with all the sudden Malarchuk posting on /sp/? I've seen it mentioned in at least 3 threads today.

I had a similar injury, only that when falling my elbow disjointed instead of the bone breaking. It hurt, but it didn't hurt THAT bad at that moment. The real pain started like 1 hour later and rehab was a bitch.

Isle of Man TT is absolutely mental, there's deaths every year. Screaming around tricky village roads on factory bikes with no crash barriers, suddenly you slap into the side of a brick Post Office and you're fucked.

I watched this one live

Fractured my wrist and felt pretty much nothing. I was like 7 or 8 so I cried anyways from the shock of my hand going limp.

It was 10x worse having the doctor tell me it didn't heal properly so he had to pop it out of its socket and place it correctly. I still have yet to feel pain at that level again at 25.
>>
>>74213867
He was not wearing his seatbelt properly , it didn't malfunction in the sense that it was broken, he just refused to wear his belt properly because he wanted to be a tough guy.

After driving on a big hole on a scooter without helmet when I was 15 and stupid, I've rolled myself on the ground (like three or four rolls) to avoid a big impact. My left inch and my right arm were broken, and I've had a steel stick chirurgically put in my arm. Some seconds after the accident I was like "okay, my head is cool, let's go". It's only two minutes later that I felt something, nausea for the most, almost no pain.

But after the operation, when I discovered I had the steel stick, it was painful because at every movement it hurts a little.

Four weeks after, I was playing ballsports again and moving my arms just like before. I may have been lucky.
