I genuinely don't know every MVP ever, but as a native "Chicagoan"*, I have so much respect for D Rose, he carried our team for years, and I refuse to believe that he is the worst.

Yes. He was drafted in '08, and his time as a superstar more or less ended in 2012. He was Hall of Fame-tier for 2 years. That's it. Not enough to get him inducted. I won't say it's sad, because Rose earns 10 times more in one month than the average person in the world will earn in a year, but he's seriously underrated, and doesn't get enough respect for being such a great player, even if it didn't last long.

*Ok, I'm actually from Evanston, but come on, that's basically the same. Was born like 5 miles from the Chicago city limits.

"MVP" is just another way of saying 'player of the year' these days. It does not mean 'best player in the world'. Westbrook will almost certainly win it this year, but would anyone seriously say he's the best in the world? Of course not. Lebron, Curry, and arguably Durant are all better.

I think we should either create separate awards for 'best in the world' and 'player of the year' (which is what the European soccer leagues do), or change the name of MVP to 'player of the year'.

Because Lebron has been the most valuable player literally since the night he played his first game. This is a guy who got a $100 million contract from Nike before he even finished 1 month in the league.

It's interesting that in the NFL and MLB you have lots of MVPs not in the HOF, but in NHL and especially NBA you have pretty much none. Why is that? All I can think of is that NFL MVP is always just best QB/RB, while the HOF is more evenly distributed across positions, while in MLB you have two MVPs every season and a lot of them are only excluded from the HOF because of scandals.

I still think D Rose could be a HoF inductee. People don't factor in winning an MVP when they consider if he should be inducted or not, they also forget the huge brand and the shoes and the big-market teams he's played on.

One, it's harder to average a triple double nowadays due to fewer possessions, and two, totally different media situation back then. Westbrook's getting a ton of coverage for what he's doing. We can already see how the voting's going to go if he keeps up the pace.

In the NBA, the best players on the best team almost always wins the championship since teams are small and they play best of 7, so the best team will usually win out. Basketball stars are also very consistent in their production year to year, so if a player is good, they are good for a while. Only injuries and massive overhype lead to a Derek Rose situation.
