St Kilda got a team solely because they had access to the best ground south of the Yarra at the time, even if the VFA they were perennial cellar dwellers. Port Melbourne, Williamstown and Footscray were all better teams but had all had matches cancelled in the previous few years before 1897 due to poor crowd (and sometimes player) behaviour. ummm nice historical revision, but Port Melbourne had supporters coming they just wern't making as much as the other clubs because they charged low ticketing prices compared to the pounds St. Kilda was charging at their gates. In fact Port Melbourne were pushing for gate euqualization measures at the time to ensure football could be enjoyed by the working class.

St. Kilda arrogantly believed they had such a great business model, until the economic downturn of the 1890s pushed all the Jews out to Caufield/started up AJAX and all the alcoholics and prostitutes flooded in making the club an absolute basketcase both on and off the field. The reason St Kilda got in was they had one of the best grounds that the new league didn't want to lose, they were closer geographically (you will notice it was all inner suburbs who got in), and Port had a bad reputation for crowd violence.

St Kilda's "business model" as it were was never good, they were always losing games. They just lucked out on a good ground in a good location.
